In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the evolution of weld pool geometry with moving free surface during low-energy density laser welding process. The free surface elevates near the weld pool edge and descends at the center of the weld pool if d$\sigma$/dT is dominantly negative. It is shown that the predicted weld pool width and depth with moving free surface are a little greater than those with flat weld pool surface. It is also believed that the weld pool surface oscillation during the melting process augments convective heat transfer rate in the weld pool. The present analysis with moving free surface should be considered when We number is very small compared to 1.0 since the deformation of the weld pool surface is noticeable as We number decreases.
Welding of structure produces welding residual stresses which influence buckling strength, brittle fracture strength and cold crack on the weld parts. Therefore, it is very important to accurately analyze the residual stress before welding in order to guarantee the safety of weldment. If the weld length is long enough compared to the thickness and the breadth of plate, thermal and mechanical behaviors in the middle portion of the plate are assumed to be uniform along the thickness direction(z-axis). Thus, the following conditions(so-called plane deformation) can be assumed for the plate except near its end;1) distributions of stress and strain are independent on the z-axis;2) plane normal to z-axis before deformation remains plane during and after deformation. In this paper, plane-deformation thermal elasto-plastic problem is formulated by being based on the finite element method. Moreover special regards and paid to the fact that material properties in elastic and plastic region are temperature-dependence. And the method to solve the plane-deformation thermal elasto-plastic problem is shown by using the incremental technique. From the results of analysis, the characterisics of distribution of welding residual stress and plastic strain with the production mechanism are clarified.
IIn this study, used is the equivalent loading method based on the inherent strain to predict the welding deformation of panel members. Equivalent loads are computed from the inherent strain distribution around weld line, and then applied for the linear finite element analysis. Thermal deformation of panel members can be, of course, carried out through the rigorous thermal elasto-plastic analysis procedure but it is not practical in applying to predicting the welding deformation of large structures such as blocks found in a ship structure from view of computing time. The present equivalent load approach has been applied to flat plate model to verify the present approach, and to several curved plate models having the curvature in the welding direction to investigate the effect of the longitudinal curvature upon the weld-induced deformation. The results are compared with those by thermal elasto-plastic analysis. As far as the present results are concerned, it can be said that the present approach shows good agreement with the results by welding experiment and the rigorous thermal elasto-plastic analysis. The present approach has been also applied to predict the welding deformation of panel block as for application illustration to practical model.
The present study was aimed at investigating the effect of welding parameters such as welding current, electrode force(or squeeze force) and parts cleaning on the sound weld, and establishing the most reliable weld conditions for HWP(Heavy Water Reactor) fuel end capping with the resistance upset butt welding. Major results obtained are as follows. 1. The amount of sound weld was increased with increasing weld current(5.0-11KA) because the activated diffusion with increasing heat generation played an important role in eliminating the porosity and weld line in the weld interface. 2. It was found that weld current was not significantly influenced by the electrode force although the increase of it caused a slight increase of weld current and upset deformation. 3. Acetone rinsing before drying for the Zircaloy-4 end cap cleaning produced the reliable sound weld because it would remove the remaining solvent and surface films, and provided the uniform contact between the end cap and the tube. 4. The optimum welding conditions for fuel end capping by a resistance upset hytt welding are obtained as follows. weld current: 10-11KA, electrode force: 62-90KPa parts cleaning: vapor degreasing.rarw.water, acetone rinsing.rarw.drying.
The effects of root gap on welding residual stress and deformation are dealt with the multi-pass weldment with three kinds(0, 6, 30mm) of root gap by F.E.M common code, and then compared with experiment data. In this analysis, an 100% ramp heat input model was used to avoid numerical convergence problem due to an instantaneous increase in temperature near the fusion zone, and the effect of a moving arc in a two dimensional plane was also included. During the analysis, a small time increment was applied in a period with instantaneous temperature fluctuation while a large time increment was used in the rest period. The residual stress is distributed as symmetric types and maximum value is also equivalent when the weldment with 0mm and 6mm root gap is welded. In the case of 30mm root gap welding, the distribution of the residual stress extends over a wide range as asymmetric types due to the built-up weld, and most of the residual stress is biased in the side of a built-up weld part. In case of 0mm gap welding and 6mm gap welding, a little angular distortion occurs, but the level of deformation is small. When the weldment with 30mm root gap is welded, the angular deformation of the asymmetric types, however, occurs larger than the other specimens. The experimental and the analytic results show good coincidence and indicate that the welding residual stress and deformation distribution of 30 mm root gap specimen may be asymmetric and the amplitude is larger than those of root gap specimen under standard.
In order to analyze the stretch forming characteristics of tailored blanks, laser welded blanks of different thickness and strength combinations were prepared and stretching tests were done. The stretching formability of laser welded blanks was reduced as increasing the deformation restraining force ($strength{\times}thickness$) ratio between two welded sheets. Weld line movement was attributed to strain concentration at weaker sheets and resulted in fracture at weaker sid, so that fracture could be predicted by the forming limit of the weak sheet. In the case of a welded blank with the similar deformation restraining force rations between two welded sheets, crack occurred at weld and its forming limit was about 15% less than the base sheet. The effects of lubrication and weld line position on stretch-ing formability were also investigated by experiments. Lower friction did not always give better formability for tailored blanks. Stretching formability was observed to be improved as increasing the area of weak sheet.

An analytical method to predict the post-weld deformation at the heat-affected zone (HAZ) is presented in this paper. The method was based on the assumption that the post-weld deformation is caused by external forces resulting from the inherent strain, which is defined as the irrecoverable strain after removing structural restraints and loadings. In general, the equivalent loading method can be used to analyze distortions in welding areas because it is efficient and effective. However, if additional loads are applied after welding, it is difficult to determine the final strain on a welded structure. To determine the final strain of a welded structure at the HAZ more accurately, we developed a modified equivalent loading method based on the inherent strain that incorporated hardening effects. The proposed method was applied to calculate the residual stress at the HAZ. Experiments were also conducted on welded plates to evaluate the validity of the proposed method.
Roughness of the surface to be welded is one of the important factors affecting the weldabilities on the pressure welding. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of the surface roughness upon the welding process and the weldability of pressure welds, using Aluminium AA1050 plates treated by various surface polishing The results obtained are as following. 1. The optimum welding deformation is about 38(%)-42(%) in cold pressure weld. 2. The grinding work on the weld surface is superior to milling and paper polishing. 3. Weld pressure must be beyond $0.5kg/mm^2$ in order that the bond may be achieved.
Residual stresses and thermal deformation of a structure due to welding are very imfortant factors for a weld design. It has been carried therretical analysis to invesitigate influence of heat flux to residual stresses and thermal deformation producted by curcumferential welding. Temperature, stresses and deformationn are obtain as a function of circumferentisl drgree and distance from welding center line. These result can applicate to predict and remove the deformation or residual stresses built up by welding.
