The cumulative, shrinkage plastic strains and their distributions in the weld joint after completion of the welding process determine welding-induced distortion. Although the weldment undergoes many complex physical and metallurgical changes during welding, only the material plastic temperature range and its cooling history below this temperature range influence the [mal state of the cumulative shrinkage plastic strains. In addition, for structural welds, these plastic strains are uniform, except in the arc start and stop regions, along the weld. Therefore, the plastic strain-based "inherent shrinkage model" is effective and accurate to describe welding-induced distortion. This paper presents the theoretical background and numerical verification of this root cause.

The object of this study is to investigate the effect of joinability by using acoustic emission(AE) signals and doing a pattern recognition for weld heat affected zone(HAZ) in tensile testing. This study was carried out an SWS 490A high tension steel for electric shielded metal arc welding(SMAW), $CO_2$ gas arc welding and TIG welding. And correspondingly, the root openings are 3, 4 and 2.8mm. The results of the tensile test of weld HAZ come out electric shield arc welding $>\;CO_2$ gas arc welding > TIG welding in case of single welding. It is believed that this is a phenomenon where difference of its root opening or base metal thickness. Also, the technique of AE is ideally suited to study variables which control time and stress dependent fracture or damage process in metallic materials.

The fatigue experiments of friction stir welded Al-6061-T6 alloy with and with out back bead were performed to investigate the variation in fatigue strength and life of the Joint. It was found that there were always existed flaws at the roots of friction stir welds for the normal welding parameters and clamping conditions. In order to overcome this root flaws, friction stir welds with optimum back bead has been developed. The test results with root flaws and with back bead were compared. The fatigue life of weld with root flaws was 5-10 times shorter than that of the friction stir weld with back bead.

In this study, the metallurgical analysis and mechanical property measurement have been performed to investigate the effect of long-term thermal aging on the microstructural evolution in the fusion boundary region between weld metal and low alloy steel in dissimilar metal welds. A representative dissimilar weld mock-up made of Alloy 690-Alloy 152-A533 Gr. B was fabricated and aged at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2,750 hours. The microstructural characterization was conducted mainly near in a weld root region by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. And the mechanical properties were measured with Vickers microhardness test and nanoindentation method. A steep gradient was shown in the chemical composition profile across the interface between A533 Gr. B and Alloy 152. Type-II boundaries were found in weld side of DMW and the hardness was the highest at the narrow zone between Type-II boundary and fusion boundary.
In this study, API-X100 steel pipes were welded with various kinds of welding wires in the laser-arc hybrid welding process. 10kW fiber laser source was combined to MIG arc welding process. API X-100 steel of base metal was of 16.9mm thickness, and butt welding applied. After welding, full penetration weld was acquired by 1-pass welding. A root porosity and the lack of fusion was observed in some welding conditions. By the mixing the melted wire, acicular ferrite, polygonal ferrite, pro-eutectoid, aligned side plate, and bainite structures were observed at the weld metal. From the observation of hybrid weld, unmixed zone had more Ni and Cr. The unmixed zone was a 1/3 area of the weld metal. As the mechanical test of the hybrid welding, tensile test and impact test applied. From the tensile test, all of the welding except SM70S was fractured at the base metal. The result of the impact test at -30 degree C led 60J~320J of the absorbed energy. The result of the low-absorbed energy might be from the coarse equiaxed structures of the weld metal.
Welding defects, such as porosity and spike, have sometimes occurred in deep penetration electron beam welds. These defects are known to be one of the serious problem in electron beam welds. So, effects of active parameters ($a_b$) on bead shape and occurrence of defects in electron beam welds of heavy section 9%Ni steel plates were investigated. Partial penetration welding in flat position, and deep penetration welding of 10 ~ 28mm depth were investigated in this study. It is desirable to select low accelerating voltage and above the surface focus position $a_b$$\geq$1.2 at which a wine-cup shaped bead is obtained to avoid the welding defects such as spike and root porosity. When the accelerating voltage of electron beam was low (90kV), active parameter ($a_b$) did not influence on the bead width, penetration depth and weld defects significantly. However, in case of high voltage ($\geq$120kV), active parameter ($a_b$) was sensitively associated with penetraton depth and weld defects, i.e. when the active parameter (($a_b$) was in the range of 0.6 to 1.0, the depth of penetration was always over the target (23mm), while the depth of penetration was dramatically decreased with further increase of active parameter ($a_b$). The weld defects were decreased with the increase of active parameter $a_b$ resulting in the decrease of energy density of the focused beam in the root part of fusion zone.
The metallurgical and mechanical characteristics, toughness and corrosion resistance of dissimilar welds between super duplex stainless steel UNS S32750 and carbon steel ASTM A516Gr.70 have been evaluated. Three heat inputs of 21.12, 24.00, 26.88kJ/cm were employed to make joints of dissimilar metals with flux cored arc welding(FCAW). Based on microstructural examination, vermicular ferrite was formed in the first layer of weld at low heat input(21.12kJ/cm) and $Cr_{eq}/Ni_{eq}$ of 1.61 while acicular ferrite was formed in last layer of weld at high heat input(26.88kJ/cm) and $Cr_{eq}/Ni_{eq}$ of 1.72. Ferrite percentage in dissimilar welds was lowest in the first layer of weld regardless of heat inputs and it gradually increased in the second and third layers of weld. Heat affected zone showed higher hardness than the weld metal although reheated zone showed lower hardness than weld metal due to the formation of secondary austenite. Tensile strengths of dissimilar welds increased with heat input and there was 100MPa difference. The corrosion test by ferric chloride solution showed that carbon steel had poor corrosion resistance and pitting corrosion occurred in the first layer(root pass) of weld due to the presence of reheated zone where secondary austenite was formed. The salt spray test of carbon steel showed that the surface only corroded but the amount of weight loss was extremely low.

This paper is concerned with numerical analyses of residual stresses in welds and material's susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) for the primary piping system in nuclear power plants: Both the dissimilar metal weld (DMW) for stainless steel to low alloy steel joints and the similar metal weld (SMW) for forged stainless steel to cast stainless steel joints are considered. Thermal elasto-plastic analyses using the finite element method (FEM) are performed to predict residual stresses generated in fabrication welding and its related processes for both the DMW and SMW, including effects of quenching for cast stainless steel piping, machining of the DMW root, and grinding of the SMW root. As a result, the effect of quenching should be included in the evaluation of residual stresses in the SMW for the cast stainless steel piping. It is deemed that residual stresses in both the DMW and SMW would not affect the SCC susceptibility of the welds providing that the welding processes are completed without any weld repair on the inside wall of the joint. However, the grinding process if performed on the safe-end to piping weld, would produce a high level of residual stresses in the inner surface region and thus a stress improvement process (e.g. buffing) should be considered to reduce susceptibilities to SCC.
In most industry, manual GTAW welding is preferred for formation of stable back bead in root weld of butt joint. However, manual GTAW welding has low productivity as compared with GMAW, also it has unstable bead quality which depend on skilled workers. So it is necessary to develop process of root pass welding by using automation GMAW that have stable back bead formation and high productivity. In this paper, the design of U-groove with 3mm root face was applied to extend the tolerance of misalignment in condition of standard root gap 1.5mm. Consequently, for the formation of stable back bead in root pass of butt welding, in case of the narrow root gap(0.5mm) the large arc force was applied by increasing the current and voltage. In case of the large root gap(2.5mm), the small arc force was applied by decreasing the current and voltage. Considering the various root gap, the required deposited metal was controlled by welding speed only.
