Root gap out of standard by welding deformation is frequently produced at butt weld joints of steel bridge. For example although standard root gap is below 6mm at butt weld joints of plates under 15mm thickness. maximum 35mm root opening is produced at the weld field. At this case, the part out of standard is generally built up and the rest part is welded by WPS. Direct welding without built-up welding is preferred in weld field because built-up welding process bring about the cost-up at manufacturing. To apply this direct weld to root gap out of standard, the investigation about mechanical properties and fatigue at weldment is required. Inthisstudy, therefore the verification for direct weld without built up is performed at weldment as root gap. It includes tension, bending. hardness, impact and fatigue test for each welding specimen of 6mm, 25mm, 35mm root gap.
Both impact and fracture toughnesses were investigated with root gaps in FCAW weld metals at room temperature and 0.deg.C. The maximum impact value was obtained at the root gap of 16mm for 1G position weld metal, and the impact value of 3G position weld metals also showed the maximum impact value at the root gap of 12mm. However, the fracture toughnes(CTOD)values tend to decrease with increasing root gaps at both temperatures in 1G weld metal. Bending test also showed satisfactory results with all of root gaps investigated. Based on this result, it becomes possible to apply wide root gaps in real projects in both aspects of toughness and bending resistance.
There was extreme improvement in the processing result of weld toe, but there is possibility that the fatigue failure occurs from the weld root part where the fatigue strength became low relatively. This study did the fatigue test at the cross rib specimens which implemented a partial penetration weld to improve the fatigue strength of the weld root part. As a result of the fatigue test of the partial penetration weld and the fillet weld specimens, almost the same fatigue strength appeared. Because the fatigue failure began from toe, there was not a reinforcement effect in the weld root part by the partial penetration weld. So, it examined fatigue strength at the partial penetration welding specimens which processed toe to stop the fatigue failure of toe part. As a result, there was big fatigue strength improvement from the partial penetration weld than the fillet weld. Therefore, if fatigue crack occurrence can be restrained from toe, it thinks that the fatigue strength of the root part can improve by the partial penetration weld, after all, it thinks that the overall fatigue life can improve.

Weld root gap is a important fact of a falling-off weld quality in various kind of weld defect. The welding quality can be controlled by monitoring important parameters, such as, the Arc voltage, welding current and welding speed during the welding process. Welding systems use either a vision sensor or an Arc sensor, both of which are unable to control these parameters directly. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain necessary bead geometry without automatically controlling the welding parameters through the sensors. In this paper we propose a novel approach using neural networks for detecting and monitoring of weld root gap and bead shape. Through experiments we demonstrate that the proposed system can be used for real welding processes. The results demonstrate that the system can efficiently estimate the weld bead shape and detect the welding defects.
It is well known that there exist two typical fatigue crack initiation locations in ship structures: one is the weld toe and the other is the weld root where partial penetration weld is performed. In particular, it is important for fillet weldments to avoid weld root cracking in order to prevent catastrophic failure particularly in ship structures. Therefore detail considerations are required for cruciform joints with partial penetration when there is a possibility of weld root crack initiation. For these reasons, fatigue tests on welded joints were performed in this study. Concept of stress intensity factor(SIF) by means of fracture mechanics is applied for predicting fatigue life of fillet welded joints.
Super-duplex stainless steels (SDSS) have a good balance of mechanical property and corrosion resistance when they consist of approximately equal amount of austenite and ferrite. The SDSS needs to avoid the detrimental phases such as sigma(${\sigma}$), chi(${\chi}$), secondary austenite(${\gamma}2$), chromium carbide & nitride and to maintain the ratio of ferrite & austenite phase as well known. However, the effects of the subsequent weld thermal cycle were seldom experimentally studied on the micro-structural variation of weldment & pitting corrosion property. Therefore, the present study investigated the effect of the subsequent thermal cycle on the change of weld microstructure and pitting corrosion property at $40^{\circ}C$. The thermal history of root side was measured experimentally and the change of microstructure of weld root & the weight loss by pitting corrosion test were observed as a function of the thermal cycle of each weld layer. The ferrite contents of root weld were reduced with the subsequent weld thermal cycles. The pitting corrosion was occurred in the weld root region in case of the all pitted specimen & in the middle weld layer in some cases. And the weight loss by pitting corrosion was increased in proportional to the time exposed at high temperature of the root weld and also by the decrease of ferrite content. The subsequent weld thermal cycles destroy the phase balance of ferrite & austenite at the root weld. Conclusively, It is thought that as the more subsequent welds were added, the more the phase balance of ferrite & austenite was deviated from equality, therefore the pitting corrosion property was deteriorated by galvanic effect of the two phases and the increase of 2nd phases & grain boundary energy.
Effective notch stress, as an approach to evaluate the local stress at a notch (weld toe or root), is defined as the total stress assuming linear-elastic material behavior. This method can be effectively used to evaluate the fatigue performance of welded joints. In this study, finite element analysis results using the effective notch stress method were correlated with fatigue test results of rib-to-deck welded joints in a steel orthotropic bridge deck. Effective notch stress approach provided a good correlation with the crack pattern observed in the full-scale fatigue test. A higher effective notch stress at the critical weld toe than at the weld root was consistent with the dominant crack pattern observed at the weld toe during testing. The effective notch stress at the toe on the deck plate was about 80% higher than that on the rib; no cracks at the weld toe on the rib in the testing were observed. Maximum effective notch stress at the weld root occurred on the upper side of the root notch, which indicates that cracks are more likely to propagate into the deck plate, not into the weld metal. This is also consistent with the observed crack pattern in which the crack from the root propagated upward into the deck plate. No such crack pattern, propagating into the weld metal, was observed in the testing.

Dimensional difference by welding deformation is usually occurred at steel bridge manufacturting or multi-pass welding used at joining of thick plates. Be this, root gap out of standard is frequently developed at butt weld joints. For example, although standard root gap below 6mm at butt weld joints of plates under 15mm thickness, maximum 30mm root opening is developed at the weld field. At this case, 24mm parts out of standard is generally built up. But, there are no accumulated data and restriction about this built up welding pars. In this study, therefore, the accumulation of data for built up parts and the verification of the mechanical properties of weld part as root gap is performed. It is included that tensile, bending, impact, hardness test and microstructural review for each welding specimen of 0mm, 6mm, 30mm root opening.
This paper describes a study of fillet welded joint stressed perpendicular to the weld line. The finite element method was used to determine the stress intensity factor for cruciform joint at weld toe and root cracks according to variation of H/Tp, weld angle and main plate thickness. But, in this study, weld angle was fixed at 45.deg., since the variation of weld angle affect the stress intensity factor little, also main plate thickness was fixed. Pulsating tension fatigue test was done at the second phase of experiment. The work using the concepts of the fracture mechanics on the stable crack growth, was in the correlation of the experimental fatigue stress-life behavior because the fatigue behaviors of various joint geometries are related to the stress intensity factors calculated by F.E.M. analysis. Main results obtained are summarized as follows. 1) According to the propagation of toe crack, the variation of the stress intensity factor at root crack is obvious as H/Tp is smaller. 2) According to the propagation of root cracks, the change of the stress intensity factor of the toe is very large with propagation of root crack. 3) The calculation formula of the stress intensity factor of crack propagation at the root crack was obtained. 4) The calculation formula of the stress intensity factor at the toe cracks was obtained in similar manner. 5) From the results of experiment, the velocity of fatigue crack propagation at the weld toe and root was estimated.

The dramatic increase in the depth of a weld bead penetration has been demonstrated by welding a stainless steel in GTA (Gas-Tungsten-Arc) process with activating flux which consists of oxides and halides. However, there is no commonly agreed mechanism fer the effect of flux on the process. In order to make clear the mechanism, each behavior of the arc md the weld pool in GTA process with activating flux is observed in comparison with a conventional GTA process. A constricted anode root is shown in GTA process with the activating flux, whereas a diffuse anode root is shown in the conventional process. These anode roots are related strongly to metal vapor from the weld pool and the metal vapor is also related to temperature distributions on the weld pool surface. Furthermore, it is suggested that a balance between the Marangoni force and the drag force of the cathode jet should dominate the direction of re-circulatory flow in the weld pool. The electromagnetic force encourages the inward re-circulatory flow due to the constricted anode root in the case with flux. The difference in flow direction in the weld pool changes the geometry or depth/width ratio of weld bead penetration.
