  • Electron beam (EB) weldability of pure grade Nb sheet was studied. One of Nb sheets was as-annealed and the other was cold rolled. Microstructures, Vickers hardness, and transverse weld tensile test were carried out for the base metal, the heat affected zone (HAZ) and weld metal. In the case of the EB welds made using the annealed Nb sheeet, fine equiaxed grains and coarse grains were dominant at the base metal and the HAZ, respectively, and columnar grains were observed at the weld metal. For the EB welds made using the cold rolled Nb sheet, elongated grains in the rolling direction at the base metal, and the microstructures of the weld metal and the HAZ are similar to those of the EB welds made using the annealed Nb sheet, respectively. For both annealed and cold rolled Nb sheet, the width of the HAZs are unusually wide in spite of using high density heat source, i.e. electron beam, and the grain sizes of both HAZs are similar. When tensile test was carried out using the transverse weld specimens, the failure occurred at the HAZ for both EB welds made using Nb sheets annealed and cold rolled, respectively and the tensile strengths of both specimens were 161MPa. Vickers hardness of EB welds made using annealed Nb was 56-57 Hv at both base metal and weld metal, 52-53 Hv at the HAZ. On the other hand, Vickers hardness of EB welds made using cold rolled Nb was 97-99 Hv at the base metal, but the hardness values of weld metal were similar to those obtained at the weld metal of annealed Nb.

  • In order to investigate characteristics of surface fatigue crack propagation from a pit shaped surface defect which frequently exists around welded joints, SS400 steel with thickness of 12mm, which has been generally used for structure members, was welded with submerged-arc butt type and machined for both surface. An initial surface defect of pit shape with the aspect ratio of 2 was made on the specimen. The initial defect was located at 5 different zones over the weldment : weld metal zone, boundary between weld metal and HAZ, HAZ, boundary between HAZ and base metal. Characteristics of surface fatigue crack propagation from the defect on each region under the same loading condition were investigated and compared.

  • This study investigated the creep and creep crack growth (CCG) behavior of the base metal (BM), weld metal (WM), and heat affected zone (HAZ) in a Gr. 91 weldment, which was made by a shield metal arc weld process. A series of tensile, creep, and CCG tests were performed for the BM, WM, and HAZ at 550 ℃. Creep behavior of the BM, WM, and HAZ was analyzed in terms of various creep laws; Norton's power-law, Monkman-Grant relation and damage tolerance factor (λ), and their constants were determined. In addition, each CCGR law for the BM, WM, and HAZ was proposed and compared in terms of a C*-fracture parameter. The WM and HAZ revealed faster creep rate, lower rupture ductility, and faster CCGRs than the BM, but they showed a similar behavior in the creep and CCG. The CCGRs obtained in the present study exhibited a marginal difference when compared with those of RCC-MRx of currently elevated design code in France. A creep crack path in the HAZ plane progressed towards a weak fine-grained HAZ adjacent to the BM.

  • The paper presents the characteristics of mechanical properties within the heat affected zone (HAZ) of dissimilar metal weld between SA508 Gr.1a and F316 stainless steel (SS) with Alloy 82/182 filler metal. Tensile tests were performed using small-size specimens taken from the HAZ regions close to both fusion lines of weld, and the micro-structures were examined using optical microscope (OM) and transmission microscope (TEM). The results showed that significant gradients of the yield stress (YS), ultimate tensile stress (UTS), and elongations were observed within the HAZ of SA508 Gr.1a. This was attributed to the different microstructures within the HAZ. In the HAZ of F316 SS, however, the welding effect dominated the YS and elongation rather than UTS, and TEM micrographs conformed the strengthening in the HAZ of F316 SS was associated with a dislocation-induced strain hardening.

  • Effects of the aging treatments on the microstructure and strength of heat affected zone(HAZ) in the welds of a age-hardened Al-Mg-Si alloy, 5N01-T5, were investigated. The base metal aging treatments before MIG welding were conducted at 423K to 473K for 28.8ks Post weld heat treatment(PWHT) to recover the HAZ strength was performed at 448K for 28.8ks. Microstructure observations, hardness measurements and tensile tests were conducted to study properties of the MIG weld joints. The position of the softest region in HAZ where the hardness insufficiently recovered after natural aging and PWHT was at a distance of approximately 15mm from the center of the fusion zone. Hardness of the softest regions after natural aging and PWHT decreased with increase in the base metal aging temperature. TEM observation clarified that strengthening ${\beta}$"(Mg$_2$Si) precipitates and coarse ${\beta}$′ precipitates affected the hardnes of HAZ. Incomplete recover of hardness in HAZ after PWHT was caused by the precipitating of non-hardening ${\beta}$′ phase during the weld thermal cycle. In order to examine the effects of weldheat input and welding speed, the laser weld joints were also investigated and compared with the MIG weld ones. Laser welding had the narrower width of the softened regions in HAZ compared with MIG welding. The hardness of the softest regions of the laser welds after PWHT was higher than that of the MIG welds. Quantitative relations between hardness of the softest region and base metal aging temperature were obtained for both welding processes. Accordingly, the equations to estimate the strength of the weld joints after PWHT with varying base metal temperatures were proposed for MIG welding and laser welding.

  • The plastic zone formed around a notch tip is important in analyzing the fracture toughness of structures and particularly weld cracks existed in the weld HAZ (heat affected zone) which produces local plastic deformation at the crack tip. Therefore, in order to analyze the fracture toughness in weld HAZ, it is necessary to investigate the new fracture toughness parameter $K_{c}$ $^{*}$ and critical plastic strain energy $W_{p}$ $^{c}$ according to the shape and size of the plastic zone. 1) If the temperature corresponding to $K_{c}$ $^{*}$=130kg-m $m^{-3}$ 2/ is determined, transition temperature $T_{tr}$ the magnitude of plastic zone size, and heat input change depending on the fracture toughness. The blunted amounts of the parent and weld HAZ show mild linear variation until .delta.=0.4mm and then increase very steeply there after. 2) The relation between the plastic strain energy( $W^{p}$ ) and transition temperature( $T_{*}$tr) in parent metal is more sensitive than that of weld HAZ. However, the plastic strain energy depends on the transition temperature, and thus the yield stress, .sigma.$_{ys}$ becomes an important parameter for plastic strain energy. 3) The critical plastic strain energy( $W_{p}$ $^{c}$ ) absorbed by the plastic zone at the notch tip indicated in case of parent metal: 60J/mm, in case of heat input(20KJ/cm): 75J/mm, in case of heat input(30KJ/cm); 50J/mmJ/mm.

  • High temperature material properties of a welded joint were experimentally studied. Tensile and creep properties were measured for each part of weld metal. HAZ(heat affected zone) and parent metal at 538$^{\circ}C$. HAZ metal was obtained by a simulated heat treatment. Results showed that the order of tensile strength is weld>HAZ> parent both at 24$^{\circ}C$ and at 538$^{\circ}C$. Creep resistance was also the highest for weld metal and lowest for parent metal. Creep rupture life curves were obtained and converted to Monkman-Grant relation which is useful for life assessment. Use of the data obtained in this study is discussed.

  • This study was to evaluate mechanical properties and toughness of the Al5083-O aluminum alloy welding zone according to the mixing shield gas ratio and heat input change. The GMA(Gas Metal Arc) welding of the base metal was carried out with four different mixing shield gas ratios(Ar100%+He0%, Ar67%+He33%, Ar50%+He50%, and Ar33%+He67%) and three different heat inputs(low, medium, and high). To investigate the Charpy absorbed energy of the weld zone, the specimens were divided base metal, weld metal, fusion line, and HAZ notched specimen according to the worked notch position. The different gas ratio and heat input had little effect upon the tensile strength. But Ar33%+He67% mixture had the greatest mechanical properties considering that the more He gas ratio concentrations, the higher yield strength and elongation. The maximum load and displacement of the weld metal notche specimen was so much low more than that of the base metal, but fusion line and HAZ notched specimens showed almost same regardless of the mixing shield gas ratio and heat input. The Charpy absorbed energy was lowest in weld metal notched specimen, and increased in the fusion line, and HAZ notche specimen in order. Ar33%+He67% mixture had the greatest toughness considering that the more He gas ratio, the higher absorption energy.

  • The fatigue test was carried out to evaluate the fatigue characteristics of fire resistance steel for frame structure and heat affected zone (HAZ) by the one side Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). In this paper, the fatigue crack growth behavior was investigated with the compact tension specimen of base metal and the HAZ according to chemical composition and rolling end temperature, respectively. And the acoustic emission signals obtained from the fatigue test were analyzed by the time-frequency analysis method as a nondestructive evaluation. Main results obtained are summarized as follows; The hardness was appeared softening phenomenon that weld metal and HAZ are lower than that of base metal. Fatigue life of welded specimen was longer than that of base metal. m was 3~4.5 in base metal and 3.8~5.8 in HAZ. The main frequency range of acoustic emission signal analyzed from time-frequency method is different with the range by noise and crack. Also, it could be classified that it was also generated by fracture mechanics of dimple, inclusion etc.
