  • Welding variables and conditions in gas metal arc welding (GMAW) effect on the weld quality and productivity, extensive research efforts have been made to analyze the welding variables and conditions. In this study dynamic behavior of GMAW system is investigated using the characteristic equations of the power supply, wire and welding arc. Characteristic equation of wire is modified to include the effect of droplets attached at the electrode tip. The dynamic characteristics of arc length, current, voltage with respect to the step, ramp inputs of CTWD was simulated, seam tracking procedure using arc sensor was simulated with variable V-Groove geometries and weaving frequencies. From results of simulation, some predictions about dynamic characteristics of GMAW and welding process are available. The proposed simulator and results appear to be utilized to determine the proper welding conditions, to be improved by considering power supply dynamic characteristics.

  • The transient temperature distribution in the continuous friction welding 304 stainless steel bars is investigated by experimental and analytical methods. It is calculated by F.D.M. (finite difference method). The heating pressure, the rotational speed and friction coefficient obtained from experiment are used to determine the heat input at the contacting surface. Thermal properties of the workpiece are the function of temperature. The calculated temperature is well coincided with the measured value. The grain size at weld interface is extremely small due to the severe plastic deformation at high temperature, and result of this refined zone reveals higher hardness value. Because the HAZ is very narror about 2-3 mm, welding defects do not occure.

  • Several finite element models for the leak-before-break (LBB) assessment of overlay dissimilar metal weldment were constructed and analyzed to develop a simple finite element modeling method. The J-integral, crack opening displacement (COD) and J-integral distribution along the crack front in thickness direction due to the applied moment were obtained from the analysis results of the constructed finite element models, and studied compared to the previous literatures. It is concluded that the modeling with base material only is simple and produces a slightly conservative results compared to the complex modeling composed with weld metal and base metal in the calculation of J-integrals and COD values which are used for the calculation of fracture toughness and postulated leakage crack length respectively.

  • Requirements to fabrication processes for arc welding of highly loaded thick-walled joint and problems of research and development in term s of the tendency for the modern aircraft structure development are outlined. A justified, choice of the development line of the new promising welding processes for solution of these problems is presented. A complex of new welding processes and technologies for making highly reliable joints with different thickness (up to 120 mm and more) and length of weld (up to 0.1 m; 0.1-0.5 m and more than 0.5 m) has bee developed. It is shown that the possibility to control the heat flow distribution over the groove surface of the welded joints provides for improved reliability. The new welding processes are equipment are effectively used in serial production of the Mykoyan md Sukhoi supersonic aircrafts as well as in AN-124 Ruslan and AN-225 Mriya wide body aircrafts.

  • A process for the concurrent welding and extruding of pipe was designed for continuous production of fin tubes. Unlike a conventional pipe extrusion, the new process is able to extrude a pipe continuously without limit of length by using spring type wire material. The current paper provides the basic research for welding during the extrusion using a spring type wire material. The object of the current study is to investigate the possibility that the spring type wire material could be extrude into a welded pipe. The appropriate extrusion ratio was selected through investigation of loads using computer simulations. As a result, experiments showed that pipe could be welded and simultaneously extruded with spring type wire material of aluminum. The tensile strength of the welded and extruded aluminum pipe can reach 80% of tensile strength of original aluminum feedstock.

  • Arc sensor gives important groove information during welding. Automatic seam tracking control system with arc sensor has significant characteristics such that bead formation is given as decentralization of penetration and formation of concave bead profile and that a turning point of transverse weaving with constant arc length control is decided whether or not torch height reaches to a specified setting level. Furthermore, the rotating action of the arc prevents hanging of weld bead and forms flat bead surface under high speed welding condition. The variation of groove and deposition area can be detected from the trace of weaving. The area and width of weaving trace has close correlation with the area of groove and deposition. In this paper, main object of this system is to realize an adaptive microprocessor based controller ...

  • In this study, fatigue strength of load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joints were evaluated using a new method proposed by Yamada, for geometric or structural stress in welded joint, that is, one-millimeter stress below the surface in the direction corresponding to the expected crack path. Validity of the method is verified by analyzing fatigue test results for load-carrying cruciform welded specimens has different size of weld toe radius, leg length and plate thickness reported in literature. Structural stress concentration factor for 1mm below the surface was calculated by finite element analysis for each specimen respectively. When compared to the basic fatigue resistance curve offered by BS7608, the one-millimeter stress method shows conservative evaluation for load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joints.

  • In this study, the friction weldability and properties of inconel alloy(IN738LC) to stainless steel (STS304) was investigat-ed. Upset length increased according to increment of friction pressure and time. The tensile strength of the friction weld-ing reached 85% of the STS304 base metal strength under the conditions of 8 sec friction time, 50MPa friction pressure and 150 MPa upset pressure. From the result of fracture surface analysis, IN738LC section can be joined with STS 304 materials in shape of a convex lens. Also, the temperature of welded interface was measured with k-type thermocouple. Finally the plastic flow confirmed at the welded interface STS304 by micro test.

  • Ultrasonic metal welder is consisted of power supply, transducer, booster, and horn. Precise designing is required since each parts' shape, length and mass can affect driving frequency and vibration mode. This paper analyzed Cu sheet deposition characteristics using ultrasonic metal welder and tension tester. A horn suitable for 40,000Hz was attached to the ultrasonic metal welder in order to weld Cu plates. The Cu sheet welding was done with different amplitude, pressure, and welding time, and its maximum tension was measured with tension tester. Maximum tension of 153.87N was obtained when the pressure was 2.0bar, amplitude was 80%, and welding time was 0.30s. Therefore, excessive welding condition negatively influences maximum tension measurement result.
