The limits of S-band dual-polarization radars in Korea are not reflected on the recent weather forecasts of Korea Meteorological Administration and furthermore, they are only utilized for rainfall estimations and hydrometeor classification researches. Therefore, this study applied four merging methods [SA (Simple Average), WA (Weighted Average), SSE (Sum of Squared Error), TV (Time-varying mergence)] to the QPE (Quantitative Precipitation Estimation) model [called RAR (Radar-AWS Rainfall) calculation system] using single-polarization radars and S-band dual-polarization radar in order to improve the accuracy of the rainfall estimation of the RAR calculation system. As a result, the merging results of the WA and SSE methods, which are assigned different weights due to the accuracy of the individual model, performed better than the popular merging method, the SA (Simple Average) method. In particular, the results of TVWA (Time-Varying WA) and TVSSE (Time-Varying SSE), which were weighted differently due to the time-varying model error and standard deviation, were superior to the WA and SSE. Among of all the merging methods, the accuracy of the TVWA merging results showed the best performance. Therefore, merging the rainfalls from the RAR calculation system and S-band dual-polarization radar using the merging method proposed by this study enables to improve the accuracy of the quantitative rainfall estimation of the RAR calculation system. Moreover, this study is worthy of the fundamental research on the active utilization of dual-polarization radar for weather forecasts.

In this paper, we propose an intelligent signal control method based on fuzzy logic applicable in real time. We design membership functions to model occupied time and the number of vehicles for each lane. A priority for each signal phase is computed by the popular Max-Min fuzzy inference based on control rules and membership degrees of prepared two functions at any given time. A tie breaking scheme is considering weighted sum of the rate of occupied time per number of vehicles in that block and the standard deviation of these blocks. Only a signal phase with the highest priority is opened and all others are closed and the duration of the phase opening is computed proportional to the rate of number of weighting vehicles in that signal per all weighted vehicles. The simulation result shows that the proposed method is more efficient than the static control in all simulation conditions in $2{\times}3$ experimental designs with the number of vehicles in intersection and congestion degrees that have all three levels.

Relevance has a long history of scholarly investigation and discussion in information science. One of its notable concepts is that of 'user-based' relevance. The purpose of this study is to examine how users construct their perspective on the concept of relevance; to analyze what the constituent elements (facets) of relevance are, in terms of core-periphery status; and to compare the difference of constructions of two groups of users (information users vs. information professionals) as applied with a social representations theory perspective. Data were collected from 244 information users and 123 information professionals through use of a free word association method. Three methods were employed to analyze data: (1) content analysis was used to elicit 26 categories (facets) of the concept of relevance; (2) structural analysis of social representations was used to determine the core-periphery status of those facets in terms of coreness, sum of similarity, and weighted frequency; and, (3) maximum tree analysis was used to present and compare the differences between the two groups. Elicited categories in this study overlap with the ones from previous relevance studies, while the findings of a core-periphery analysis show that Topicality, User-needs, Reliability/Credibility, and Importance are configured as core concepts for the information user group, while Topicality, User-needs, Reliability/Credibility, and Currency are core concepts for the information professional group. Differences between the social representations of relevance revealed that Topicality was similar to User-needs and to Importance. Author is closely related to Title while Reliability/Credibility is linked with Currency. Easiness/Clarity is similar to Accuracy. Overall, information users and professionals function with a similar social collective of shared meanings for the concept of relevance. The overall findings identify the core and periphery concepts of relevance and their relationships in terms of coreness, similarity, and weighted frequency.

Shape optimization of tall buildings is an efficient approach to mitigate wind-induced effects. Several studies have demonstrated the potential of shape modifications to improve the building's aerodynamic properties. On the other hand, it is well-known that the cross-section geometry has a direct impact in the floor area availability and subsequently in the building's profitability. Hence, it is of interest for the designers to find the balance between these two design criteria that may require contradictory design strategies. This study proposes a surrogate-based multi-objective optimization framework to tackle this design problem. Closed-form equations provided by the Eurocode are used to obtain the wind-induced responses for several wind directions, seeking to develop an industry-oriented approach. CFD-based surrogates emulate the aerodynamic response of the building cross-section, using as input parameters the cross-section geometry and the wind angle of attack. The definition of the building's modified plan shapes is done adopting the reduced basis approach, advancing the current strategies currently adopted in aerodynamic optimization of civil engineering structures. The multi-objective optimization problem is solved with both the classical weighted Sum Method and the Weighted Min-Max approach, which enables obtaining the complete Pareto front in both convex and non-convex regions. Two application examples are presented in this study to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed strategy, which permits the identification of Pareto optima from which the designer can choose the most adequate design balancing profitability and occupant comfort.

This study investigates a dynamic flexible flow shop scheduling problem under uncertain rework operations for an automobile pipe production line. We propose a weighted dispatching rule (WDR) based on the multiple dispatching rules to minimize the weighted sum of average flowtime and tardiness. The set of weights in WDR should be carefully determined because it significantly affects the performance measures. We build a discrete-event simulation model and propose a genetic algorithm to optimize the set of weights considering complex and variant operations. The simulation experiments demonstrate that WDR outperforms the baseline dispatching rules in average flowtime and tardiness.
We consider a linear calibration problem, $y_i = $$\alpha + \beta (x_i - x_0) + \epsilon_i$, $i=1, 2, {\cdot}{\cdot},n$$y_f = \alpha + \beta (x_f - x_0) + \epsilon, $ where we observe $(x_i, y_i)$'s for the controlled calibration experiments and later we make inference about $x_f$ from a new observation $y_f$. The objective of the calibration design problem is to find the optimal design $x = (x_i, \cdots, x_n$ that gives the best estimates for $x_f$. We compare Kim(1989)'s Bayesian design which minimizes the expected value of the posterior variance of $x_f$ and some optimal designs from literature. Kim suggested the Bayesian optimal design based on the analysis of the characteristics of the expected loss function and numerical must be equal to the prior mean and that the sum of squares be as large as possible. The designs to be compared are (1) Buonaccorsi(1986)'s AV optimal design that minimizes the average asymptotic variance of the classical estimators, (2) D-optimal and A-optimal design for the linear regression model that optimize some functions of $M(x) = \sum x_i x_i'$, and (3) Hunter & Lamboy (1981)'s reference design from their paper. In order to compare the designs which are optimal in some sense, we consider two criteria. First, we compare them by the expected posterior variance criterion and secondly, we perform the Monte Carlo simulation to obtain the HPD intervals and compare the lengths of them. If the prior mean of $x_f$ is at the center of the finite design interval, then the Bayesian, AV optimal, D-optimal and A-optimal designs are indentical and they are equally weighted end-point design. However if the prior mean is not at the center, then they are not expected to be identical. In this case, we demonstrate that the almost Bayesian-optimal design was slightly better than the approximate AV optimal design. We also investigate the effects of the prior variance of the parameters and solution for the case when the number of experiments is odd.

Given weighted graph G=(V,E), n=|V|, m=|E|, the minimum cut problem is classified with source s and sink t or without s and t. Given undirected weighted graph without s and t, Stoer-Wagner algorithm is most popular. This algorithm fixes arbitrary vertex, and arranges maximum adjacency (MA)-ordering. In the last, the sum of weights of the incident edges for last ordered vertex is computed by cut value, and the last 2 vertices are merged. Therefore, this algorithm runs $\frac{n(n-1)}{2}$ times. Given graph with s and t, Ford-Fulkerson algorithm determines the bottleneck edges in the arbitrary augmenting path from s to t. If the augmenting path is no more exist, we determine the minimum cut value by combine the all of the bottleneck edges. This paper suggests minimum cut algorithm for undirected weighted graph with s and t. This algorithm suggests MA-merging and computes cut value simultaneously. This algorithm runs n-1 times and successfully divides V into disjoint S and V sets on the basis of minimum cut, but the Stoer-Wagner is fails sometimes. The proposed algorithm runs more than Ford-Fulkerson algorithm, but finds the minimum cut value within n-1 processing times.

This paper presents a new neural network control for nonlinear bridge systems with earthquake excitation. We design multi-layer neural network controllers with a single hidden layer. The selection of an optimal number of neurons in the hidden layer is an important design step for control performance. To select an optimal number of hidden neurons, we progressively add one hidden neuron and observe the change in a performance measure given by the weighted sum of the system error and the control force. The number of hidden neurons which minimizes the performance measure is selected for implementation. A neural network was trained for mitigating vibrations of bridge systems caused by El Centro earthquake. We applied the proposed control approach to a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) and a two-degree-of-freedom (TDOF) bridge system. We assessed the robustness of the control system using randomly generated earthquake excitations which were not used in training the neural network. Our results show that the neural network controller drastically mitigates the effect of the disturbance.
This work presents numerical optimization for design of a blade stacking line of a low speed axial flow fan with a fast and elitist Non-Dominated Sorting of Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) of multi-objective optimization using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are discretized with finite volume approximations and solved on unstructured grids. Regression analysis is performed to get second order polynomial response which is used to generate Pareto optimal front with help of NSGA-II and local search strategy with weighted sum approach to refine the result obtained by NSGA-II to get better Pareto optimal front. Four geometric variables related to spanwise distributions of sweep and lean of blade stacking line are chosen as design variables to find higher performed fan blade. The performance is measured in terms of the objectives; total efficiency, total pressure and torque. Hence the motive of the optimization is to enhance total efficiency and total pressure and to reduce torque.

Radiative heat transfer is very important in many combustion systems since they are operated in high temperature. Fluid flows in most of the combustion systems are turbulent to promote fast mixing of the hydrocarbon fuel and oxidant. Major combustion products are $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. The turbulent flow is modeled by using the standard ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ model and the radiation transfer is modeled by using the discrete ordinates method where the radiative gas properties are calculated by using the weighted sum of gray gases model with a gray gas regrouping(WSGGM-RG). Effect of the radiation on the combustion characteristics in a three-dimensional rectangular enclosure is studied by changing the equivalence ratio. Results show that the radiation plays a significant role on the heat transfer in the combustion systems by resulting in a temperature drop of 16% as compared to that obtained without radiation. The equivalence ratio also affects the combustion by different contribution of the radiative transfer with different gas compositions.
