  • A "C-sphere" specimen geometry was used to determine the failure strength distributions of a commercially-available bearing-grade silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) with ball diameters of 12.7 and 25.4 mm. Strengths for both diameters were determined using the combination of failure load, C-sphere geometry, and finite element analysis and fitted using two-parameter Weibull distributions. Effective areas of both diameters were estimated as a function of Weibull modulus and used to explore whether the strength distributions predictably scaled between each size. They did not. That statistical observation suggested that the same flaw type did not limit the strength of both ball diameters indicating a lack of material homogeneity between the two sizes. Optical fractography confirmed that. It showed there were two distinct strength-limiting flaw types common to both ball diameters, that one flaw type was always associated with lower strength specimens, and that a significantly higher fraction of the 25.4-mm-diameter C-sphere specimens failed from it. Predictable strength-size-scaling would therefore not result as a consequence of this because these flaw types were not homogenously distributed and sampled in both C-sphere geometries.

  • During the last decade there have been many studies on the new ceramics especially engineering ceramics. Sintered silicon carbide is one of the main materials in engineering ceramics. This study shows the effects of surface treatment and microstructure especially the abnormal grain growth on the strength of sintered SiC. Surface of sintered SiC and treated with 400, 800 and 1200 grit diamond wheel. Grain growth is introduced by increasing the sintering times at 205$0^{\circ}C$. The $\beta$longrightarrow$\alpha$ transformation occurs during the sintering of $\beta$-starting materials and is often accompanied by abnormal grain growth. The overall strength distribution are estimated using the Weibull statistics. The results show that the strength of sintered SiC is limited by extrinsic surface flaws in normal-sintered specimens. And it is sound that the finer the surface finishing and the grain size the higher the strength results. But the strength of abnormal sintering specimens is limited by the abnormally-grown large tabular grains. The Weibull modulus increases with the decreasing grain size and the decreasing grit size of grinding.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the fracture strength of the dental zirconia veneering ceramics for zirconia ceramic core. Six commercial zirconia veneering ceramics were used in this study, namely E-Max(Ivoclar vivadent, Inc, Liechtenstein), Creation ZI(KLEMA Dental produckte GmbH, Austria), Cercon ceram kiss(Degudent, GmbH, Hanau-Wolfgang, Germany), Triceram(Dentaurum, Ispringen, Germany), Zirkonzahn(Zirkonzahn GmbH, Italy), Zirmax(Alpadent, korea). All samples were prepared according to the relevant instructions of manufacture. Disc specimens were prepared to the final dimensions of 17 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm in thickness. The biaxial flexure strength test was conducted using a ball-on-three-ball method. All specimens were tested in a moisture-free environment. Average flexural strengths were analyzed with Weibull analysis and one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA). Significant differences were founded between the mean flexural strength values of five commercials zirconia veneering ceramics and the other. The flexural strengths and Weibull modulus were similar to those of five groups E-Max(EM), Creation ZI(CR), Cercon ceram kiss(CE), Triceram(TR), Zirkonzahn(ZI) with the exception of Zirmax(ZM). The biaxial flexural strength from Cercon ceram kiss(CE) was higher than those of other groups. Fracture analysis showed similar results for these five groups.

  • In this study, flexural strength and fracture behavior of silicon die from single crystalline silicon wafer were investigated as a function of thickness. Silicon wafers with various thickness of 300, 200, 180, 160, 150, and 100 ${\mu}m$ were prepared by mechanical grinding and polishing of as-saw wafers. Flexural strength of 40 silicon dies (size: 62.5 mm${\times}$4 mm) from each wafer was measured by four point bending test, respectively. For statistical analysis of flexural strength, shape factor(i.e., Weibull modulus) and scale factor were determined from Weibull plot. Flexural strength reflecting both statistical fracture probability and size (thickness) effect of brittle silicon die was obtained as a linear function of die thickness. Fracture appearance was discussed in relation with measured fracture strength.

  • Although silver is used for T-OLED (Top emitting organic Light-Emitting Diode) as reflective anode, it is not an ideal material due to its low work function. Thus, we study the effect of annealing and atmospheric pressure plasma treatment on Ag film that increases its work function by forming the thin silver oxide layer on its surface. In this study, we deposited silver on glass substrate using RF sputtering. Then we treated the Ag samples annealing at $300^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes in atmosphere or treating the atmospheric plasma treatment for 30, 60, 90, 120s, respectively. We measured the change of the mechanical properties and the potential value of surface with each one at a different treatment type and time. We used nano-indenter system and KPFM (Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy). KPFM method can be measured the change of surface potential. The nanoindenter results showed that the plasma treatment samples for 30s, 120s had very low elastic modulus, hardness and Weibull modulus. However, annealed sample and plasma treated samples for 60s and 90s had better mechanical properties. Therefore, plasma treatment increases the uniformity thin film and the surface potential that is very effective for the performace of T-OLED.

  • This study investigated flexural properties of indirect Gum-shade composite resins for esthetic improvement. The material utilized in this study was Crea.lign, Twiny flow and Twiny paste (TP). Ten specimens were fabricated with a dimension of $25{\times}2{\times}2mm$ according to the ISO 4049. After fabrications, specimens were stored in the distilled water for 24 hours at the temperature of $37^{\circ}C$. Three-point bending test was performed in universal testing machine (Instron 3344; Instron, USA) at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until the failure occurred. TP exhibited a higher flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (FM) compared to the flowable materials. There were significant differences among the three materials in FS and FM. However, there was no significant difference in work of fracture (WOF) in all tested materials (p>0.05). In Weibull analysis, TP showed the greatest Weibull modulus which means a higher reliability of the materials. Also, Gum-shade composite resins revealed a strong correlation in all flexural properties. There was a positive correlation in FS-FM ($r^2=0.99$) and a negative correlation between FS-WOF and FM-WOF ($r^2>0.97$). Therefore, this confirmed that flexural property was important for mechanical behavior evaluation and useful information. To addition, this improved among mechanical properties correlation of materials as important factor.

  • It is well known that acoustic emission (AE) is indicator of rock fracturing or damage as rock is brought to failure under the uniaxial compressive loads. In this paper, an experimental study on the source location of acoustic emission on the cylindrical specimens of granite under uniaxial compression test was made. The AE source location was made by measuring the six channel AE data. Comparing to this experiment, the numerical method is applied to model the initiation and propagation of fracture by AE using a numerical code, RFPA (Realistic Failure Process Analysis). This code incorporates the mesoscopic heterogeneity in Young's modulus and rock strength characteristic of rock masses. In the numerical models, values of Young's modulus and rock strength are realized according to a Weibull distribution in which the distribution parameters represent the level of heterogeneity of the medium. The results of the simulations show that RFPA can be used not only to produce acoustic emission similar to those measurements in our experiments, but also to predict fracturing patterns under uniaxial loading condition.

  • Recently a new generation of crown and bridge veneering resins containing submicron glass fillers was introduced. These ultrasmall particle hybrid composite materials distinguish themselves, compared with conventional microfill crown and bridge resins, through improved mechanical properties. It is claimed that these composites are suitable for metal free crowns and even bridges using fiber reinforcement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermal cycling on the tensile strength of the following veneering composites: Artglass(Heraeus Kulzer Co., Wehrheim, Germany), Estonia(Kuraray Co.. Japan), Sculpture(Jeneric Pentron Co., Wallingford, U.S.A.), and Targis(Ivoclar Co., Schaan Liechenstein). According to manufacturer's instructions, rectangular tensile test specimens measuring $1.5{\times}2.0{\times}4.5mm$ were made using a teflon mold. Whole specimens were divided into two groups. One group was dried in a desiccator at $25^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, and another group was subjected to thermal cycling($10,000{\times}$) in water($5/55^{\circ}C$). All test specimens were placed in a universal testing machine and loaded until fracture with a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. Weibull analysis and Tukey's test were used to analyze the data. The fracture surfaces of specimens were observed in SEM and the aliphatic C=C absorbance peak of Estenia and Targis resin was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy. Within the limitations imposed in this study, the following conclusions can be drawn: 1. Both in drying condition and thermal cycling condition, the highest tensile strength was observed in Estenia testing group(p<0.05). 2. The strength data were at to single-mode Weibull distribution, and the Weibull modulus of all veneering composite resin specimens increased after thermal cycling treatment. 3. After thermal cycling test, the highest tensile strength was observed in the Estenia group, and the lowest value was observed in the Targis group. The tensile strength values showed the significant differences between each group(p<0.05) 4. The aliphatic C=C absorbance peak of Estonia and Targis resin was decreased after light curing, and there was no distinct change after thermal cycling.

  • For the present study two alumina bodies were prepared. The sinter-aid alumina body(SAA) was made by conventional sinter-process using sintering additives of TiO2 & MgO/CaO and the reaction-bonded alumina (RBA) made from Al-Al2O3 mixed powder. A comparison was made between those two bodies and this investigation seeks to evaluate their microstructure, physical properties and material's reliability as well as their fracture behaviour. In spite of its considerable microstructural densification accompanied by sintering shrinkage, SAA is largely inferior to RBA in fracture strength. However, SAA shows a somewhat higher m-value than RBA in respect to the material's reliability, the Weibull modulus(m). RBA, which has high fracture strength, shows much longer lifetime under static loading than SAA. Though, as with m of fracture strength, the reliability(mt) of lifetime prediction in RBA is less high than of SAA.

  • Effect of mixing homogeneity in powder mixtures of Si3N4 and sintering additive (10mol% YAG) prepared by coprecipitation on the mechanical properties of pressureless-sintered body was investigated. Sintering was performed in a graphtie furnace at 1850℃ for 0.5h under 0.15MPa N2 atmosphere using Si3N4 powder bed. Results from the measurement of Young's modulus, Vickers hardness, 4-point-bending strength, and KIC for the coprecipitation-treated (CP) and the mechanically-mixed specimens(MM) showed that a remarkable improvement in flexural strength and Weibull parameter can be achieved for the CPspecimens: (677±68MPa, 12.0) for CP samples and (539±108MPa, 5.5) for MM. Other properties were almost same irrespective of preparation methods.
