  • Robot control involves advance programming, scientific and high technology. The systematic and methodological aspects of robot controls often results in having superficial control design problems that can negatively affect the robot application, usability and appeal. User friendly interface of robot control is extremely advantageous and more attractive. To illustrate, the application of medical robot is usually handled by clients who have little background in advance programming language. Thus, it would be difficult if the client needs to use programming language to control the robot. It would justify better if the robot control is presented in a meaningful interface to the client. This way the robot application would be more natural and user friendly. This paper describes the method of developing the user interface for web based communication to control an internet robot named Tarou. The web based communication tasks involves three levels. The first one accommodates on the client sending commands to robot through the internet. The next communication level relates to the robot receiving the commands sent by the client. The final communication level generates on sending feedback on status of commands by the robot to the client. The methodology used here can be elaborated in four hierarchical steps; identify user needs and robot tasks, identify the enhancing tag reference used by the server, induce the tag into HTML, present the HTML in attractive user interface as the client control panel.

  • Purpose: To develop a web-based program on blood-borne infection control and to examine the effect of the newly developed program on perceived threat of diseases, knowledge, preventive health behaviors for blood-borne infections, and incidence rates of accidental needle sticks and other sharp object injuries in nurses. Methods: The program was developed through the processes of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research design involved a nonequivalent control group for pretest and posttest experiments. The setting was a 745-bed general hospital located in Korea. Results: The program was designed and developed after consulting previous studies. After development of the program was completed, it was evaluated and revised by a panel of experts. The total score for perceived threat of diseases, knowledge, preventive health behaviors in the experimental group was significantly higher compared to the control group (p<.05). The incidence rates for needle sticks and other sharp object injuries in the experimental group were significantly lower compared to the control group (p<.05). Conclusion: Application of a Web-based, blood-borne infection control program is effective, and can be expanded to other healthcare workers who also have a high risk of blood-borne infections.

  • The thin web panels of plate girders often need to be reinforced with transverse stiffeners to increase the shear strength. Since early 1960s, extensive researches have been conducted on the ultimate shear strength of plate girder webs with transverse stiffeners. These results have been first adopted into AASHTO(1970) and British Standard(1983) Specifications for the determination of the ultimate shear strength of transversely stiffened web panels. Although the main purposes of reinforcing web panels with longitudinal stiffeners are to increase the buckling strength and to control the lateral deflections due to bending, it has been reported that the longitudinal stiffeners increase the shear strength. However lack of studies has kept the effects of the longitudinal stiffeners on the ultimate shear strength from the design of plate girder web panels. In the present study an experimental investigation is carried out in order to assess the increment of the ultimate shear strength of shear web panels due to the longitudinal stiffeners and the results are compared with the existing failure theories.

  • In this study, the ultimate shear strength behavior of transversely stiffened curved web panels was investigated through nonlinear finite element analysis. It was found that if the transverse stiffener has a sufficient rigidity, then curved web panels used in practical designs are able to develop the postbuckling strength that is equivalent to that of straight girder web panels having the same dimensional and material properties. The nonlinear analysis results indicate that in order for curved web panels to develop the potential postbuckling strength. The rigidity of the transverse stiffener needs to be increased several times the value obtained from the Guide Specifications (AASHTO, 2003). However, in the case of thick web panels where the shear design is governed by shear yielding, the stiffener rigidity does not have to be increased. From the analysis results, a simple design formula is suggested for the rigidity of transverse stiffener under strength limit state.

  • Despite considerable life casualty and financial loss resulting from past earthquakes, many existing steel buildings are still seismically vulnerable as they have no lateral resistance or at least need some sort of retrofitting. Passive control methods with decreasing seismic demand and increasing ductility reduce rate of vulnerability of structures against earthquakes. One of the most effective and practical passive control methods is to use a shear panel system working as a ductile fuse in the structure. The shear Panel System, SPS, is located vertically between apex of two chevron braces and the flange of the floor beam. Seismic energy is highly dissipated through shear yielding of shear panel web while other elements of the structure remain almost elastic. In this paper, lateral behavior and related benefits of this system with narrow-flange link beams is experimentally investigated in chevron braced simple steel frames. For this purpose, five specimens with IPE (narrow-flange I section) shear panels were examined. All of the specimens showed high ductility and dissipated almost all input energy imposed to the structure. For example, maximum SPS shear distortion of 0.128-0.156 rad, overall ductility of 5.3-7.2, response modification factor of 7.1-11.2, and finally maximum equivalent viscous damping ratio of 35.5-40.2% in the last loading cycle corresponding to an average damping ratio of 26.7-30.6% were obtained. It was also shown that the beam, columns and braces remained elastic as expected. Considering this fact, by just changing the probably damaged shear panel pieces after earthquake, the structure can still be continuously used as another benefit of this proposed retrofitting system without the need to change the floor beam.

  • To investigate the shear strength and hysteretic behavior of SRC column to H steel beam joints, seven cruciform specimens were fabricated and tested. The test specimens showed stable hysteresis behavior with a little pinching. The strength decreased with increase in deflection after the speciemens reached at the maximum strength. The shear strength of panel zones increased with increased in the concrete amount of SRC column sections. The shear strength may conservatively be estimated by the sum of shear yielding strength of steel column web, plastic bending strength of steel column flange and ultimate shear strength of concrete in the panel zone.

  • Production simulation technology is beneficial to solve the complicated and fluctuated problems in a shipyard. It takes too much time and effort to build simulation models in the field, though. This research proposes a feasible method to reduce the difficulties related to simulation modeling for the factory or shop capacity analysis. In addition, a proposed neutral data format for production information is efficient to manage information acquisition for simulation modeling automation. A panel block shop model is contributed to comparison between the conventional technique and the automated one. The automation technique is highly recommended to run a rapid simulation in the shipyard problem.

  • The behavior of the connection for beam-to-column weak axis connection and its details should be identified. Thus, each element is considered a panel zone, and the horizontal stiffener's presence or absence and position in bracket-type welding connection are used as variables to compare the behavior of strong axis connection and weak axis connection. In this study, the strength of connection is calculated by substituting the simple beam-strengthened vertical stiffeners for connection in the presence of horizontal stiffeners. In the absence of horizontal stiffeners, the strength of connection can be calculated using local flange bending strength considering local web yielding strength, web crippling, and web buckling strength. The results of the theoretical analysis and experiments are compared.

  • As a trapezoidal corrugated steel plate has the sufficient stiffness out of plane direction without shear stiffener or thick plate, a use in the web of bridge structure is on the increase. However, there are no domestic design guides for shear buckling strength of corrugated plates. Therefore, foreign design specifications are analyzed about application methods and a numerical parametric study is used to get the relationship of the shear strength and geometric boundary conditions for corrugated plates. Elastic buckling finite element analysis is executed through eigenvalue analysis using the eight nodes five freedoms thin shell element. Parameters such as the width and height of panel and the thickness and height of web, are determined considering the factors to influence on the buckling of corrugated plate. Accuracy of shear buckling analysis is evaluated with theory of foreign buckling equations.

  • Mixed-mode (or multi-mode) surveys and (volunteer) web panels were recently introduced as ways to cope with changes in the social survey environment, which is going through a rapid and massive transformation. The direction, speed, and magnitude of these changes have been clear in Korea, too. Enumerated in Figure 1 are the social surveys between 1960 and 2010 archived by the Korean Social Science Data Archive (KOSSDA) 2. The left panel shows the exponential growth in the overall volume. The other two panels, more importantly, show the changes in the composition. Mixed-mode and online surveys are rapidly increasing their shares and are fast becoming de facto standards in Korea, as in many other countries.
