  • The primary purpose of this research is to identify effects of the complexity levels of visual factors on user's communication in the web-sites. In this study, six complexity levels of visual factors were manipulated with four items(graphics, moving graphics, size and links) to test communication effects. As a result, user's communication was influenced by the complexity of illustration. This result shows that web sites with moderate levels of illustration complexity are more preferred than with complex or simple levels of visual complexity.

  • The study of Web MGIS(Marine Geographic Information System) based on the SVG(Scalable Vector Graphics) is mainly performed on effective methodologies which transform real world data to computing world data. Web GUI system has its own target on reliable data service by acquisition of geometric information using HYCOM(HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model), accurate measurement and graphical visualization. This type of raw data visualization can be built without software tools, yet is incredibly useful for interpreting and communicating data. Even simple visualizations can aid in the interpretation of complex hydrodynamic relationships that are frequently encountered in the marine environment. The Web MGIS provides an easy way for hydrodynamic geoscientists to construct complex visualizations that can be viewed with free software. This study proposes a Web GUI MGIS using FVCOM(Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model). Finally, we design a Marine Web GUI system of Kosrae Coastal Waters integrating above data models. It must adds more ecological information and the various service item for approach more easily in order to user.

  • A Web-based design automation system for concrete slab bridge has been developed to manage the resultant documents as well as to speed up the repetitive design process. Manipulation of engineering drawings in the Web page is one of the critical functions needed for Web-based design automation. Active Server Pages (ASP) is used to that collects design parameters in the database, and eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and XML-based vector graphics are expected to facilitate the representation of engineering drawings in the Web page. In this paper, we present how we used XML and Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) to compose engineering drawings and represent them in the Web page. XML Data Island we designed to define drawing components turned out effective in manipulating the engineering drawings in the Web page.

  • Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) has enabled a visually appealing, browser-based application for the display of Brassica sequences relative to Arabidopsis thaliana, and there are currently more than 70,000 B. napus Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) displayed. The client side of this browser is based on a Custom Graphical User Interface (CGUI) library which uses SVG, a new web graphics standard, to provide windowing functionality inside the web browser. This windowing functionality, combined with asynchronous data retrieval and client side rendering overcomes two of the key technology imposed drawbacks of current web based browsers: Fixed displays and frequent page reloads. The end result is an intuitive and enjoyable browsing experience. The browser is accessible online from the Brassica / Arabidopsis Genomics Initiative (http://brassica.agr.gc.ca). Inquiries about the browser should be directed to LewisCT@agr.gc.ca.

  • The proposed cooperative 3D modelling system enables more efficient modeling works by improving current cooperation systems. Current 3D modeling tasks work on off-line and most of works are cooperation systems which communicate by files. These cooperation system cannot be interactive, occurs time delay while feedback and must have some programs which can read the files. This paper solves these problems using web that has the characteristics of network and proposes new cooperation system form. Using WebGL(Web Graphics Library) which is proposing technology in technical realization of Web 3D modeling, we make 3D objects in web browser and these objects can be manipulated by server-client communication. Therefore, if people use this system, they can use real time interaction and feedback. Also this system lowers a software installation necessity and can access everytime if web browser is installed.

  • Recently, many WMS(Web Map Services) and POI(Point of Interest) services come to be in service on the Internet using Web GIS(Geographic Information System) as Information Technology and computer H/W are evolved faster in its speed, network bandwidth and features. The Web GIS is, however, limited and constrained on the specification of its system configuration, the service class provided and the presentation methodology of a map. As the mobile Internet becomes popular in mobile service, Web GIS service on mobile environment is strongly required and to be provided by location based WMS(Web Map Service) on a mobile client such as PDA with location information of the user. In this paper, we made an effort to design and implement a GIS computing environment by thin client for mobile web map service. For implementing the thin client GIS computing environment. we were using NGII's(National Geographic Information Institute's) DXF map, representing the map by SVG(Scalable Vector Graphics) recommended by OGC(OpenGis Consortium), and adapting standard XML web service to provide the thin client GIS service on PDA by applying the location information of the user in realtime with GPS on mobile environment.

  • The purpose of this qualitative case study is to understand how the idea of data view and information graphics is used in the social studies high school textbooks. Data were collected through national curriculum documents and social studies middle school textbooks for the 10th grade students. We set up three questions for this study; what kinds of information graphics are used in the textbooks, how the graphics are organized in the social studies middle school, and how the 7th social studies curriculum is related with the 7th national mathematics curriculum. Through the data analysis, we found that 1) photographs, information tables, illustrations, etc., are used and frequencies of their usages are in descending order, 2) double lines graphs, and stripe graphs are often adopted for the comparison of populations, 3) the relation of the two subjects curricula is not well developed, especially in the curriculum steps of information maps, scatter diagrams, and comparison of populations. Finally we suggest that new web site of data view or information graphics be provided for two curricula, workshop of information graphics be needed for social studies teachers, and modification of the 7th probability and statistics curriculum.
