  • Web accessibility should be guaranteed regardless of disability in current information society. Automatic tools are needed to evaluate a huge number of web sites. Five pre-developed web accessibility evaluation tools are selected and experimenting results are compared and analyzed in this paper. The research results will be very helpful for users who are selecting a web accessibility evaluation tool.

  • Due to the development of IT technologies and the Internet penetration, the importance of Web accessibility has greatly increased and accordingly been studied a lot. This study noticed that the current evaluation algorithm for "Table Elements," which are used for data and layout tables, has many problems. Based on the Web Accessibility Guidelines, this study presents an improved evaluation algorithm for "Table Elements" and verifies its validity.

  • Web-accessibility evaluation tools can be used to determine whether or not a website meets accessibility guidelines. As such, many such tools have been developed for web accessibility, but most of them dynamically fetch and analyze pages and as a result, some pages maybe omitted due to the lack of access authorization or environment information. In this paper, we propose a static method that analyzes web accessibility via abstract parsing. Our abstract parsing technique understands syntactic and semantic program structures that dynamically generate web pages according to external inputs and parameters. The static method performs its analysis without omitting any pages because it covers all execution paths. We performed an experiment with a PHP-based website to demonstrate how our tool discovers more accessibility errors than a dynamic page accessibility analysis tool.

  • Because the web sites are in common today, the access to the web for disabled people and old aging people, what we call accessibility, becomes more important. Even though efforts to reduce the informational gap resulted from the lack of the accessibility have been carried out, the studies in this field in Korea are not still in popular. In this study, previous research on the measurements for the accessibility is reviewed and then a new model measuring accessibility is suggested. To increase the validity of the measurement, both an automated tool and a manual test are employed. First we used the 'A-Prompt', one of the popular automated validation tools and analyzed web sources, and applied manual tests by HPR Screen Reader. With the error rates calculated, the accessibility of the government web sites between Korea and the United States was compared and finally the conclusions were drawn.

  • Successful website construction and operation begins with understanding users, and to this end, user-participatory system evaluation from the user's perspective, not the developer's perspective, should be prioritized during the website construction and operation process. In order to improve the usability of the website, it is necessary to establish a foundation for continuous user testing and consistent system evaluation methods and procedures. Usability evaluation should be conducted throughout the entire system development process to achieve the most appropriate evaluation. If the obstacles revealed through usability evaluation are systematically analyzed and reflected in improving web services, there is an advantage in that the website can be designed according to the user's level and the website can be operated according to the user's perspective. Usability evaluation should be recognized as a process, not a result in itself. Therefore, usability evaluation should be conducted at the prototype or pilot test stage rather than as a procedure to verify errors after the completion of website development, so that it can be effectively utilized for actual website improvement and user satisfaction enhancement. In order to conduct empirical usability evaluation, it is necessary to comply with web standards so that it can be accessed by all web browsers. In addition, development that considers web accessibility should be conducted first so that all users can access it. If empirical evaluation including subjective satisfaction evaluation of users, mechanical evaluation using usability evaluation tools, and heuristic evaluation in which experts evaluate based on checklists are conducted in combination, the empirical evaluation procedure or time can be shortened. The expected effects of usability evaluation are as follows. If the obstacles revealed in the usability test results are systematically analyzed and reflected in the improvement of web services, there is an advantage in that the website can be designed to match the user's eye level and the website can be operated according to the user's perspective. Since users can easily use the website without obstacles or errors, it can induce continuous revisiting. By actively placing services that match the user's interests on the user's main movement path, interest and curiosity in the service can be drawn.
