W-Ti-C-N based multiphase hard materials have been prepared from WC/TiN powder mixture. By sintering at and above 190$0^{\circ}C$, the two phases of powder mixture has transformed into intermixed W, W2C and Ti(C, N) phases. For the temperature range between 180$0^{\circ}C$ and 210$0^{\circ}C$, the sintered or hot pressed samples show maximum density and hardness. The seems that metallic W grains enhance the fracture toughness of materials. The wear resistance of the material is found to increase with increasing hardness.

In order to clarify the wear resistance as cutting tools, the effect of oxygen addition on oxidation behavior of the ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramics with 5 mass% $Y_2O_3$ and 2 or 4 mass% $Al_2O_3$ was investigated by performing oxidation tests in air at $1300^{\circ}$ to $1400^{\circ}C$ and cutting performance tests. From test results, we could conclude that the mechanical properties of ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramics depending on oxygen introduction are much effective on cutting performance improvements of ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramics.
The experimental study has been performed to deposit to deposit chromia powder on magnssium alloy for tribological and mechanical properties. The optimal condition was obtained by changing the spray condition such as working distance and gun power. As ceramics was coated onto the a light metal such as Mg according to the weight reduection of the car engine block, it could acquire that the engine efficiency deu to the weight reduction and properties such as resistance to heat, as well as wear. Coating qualities are discussed with respect to hardness, tribologicalproperty, and microstructure. The tribological and mechanical properties are investigated by using the reciprocal configuration tribometer and microharduess tester. Wear mode is determined by observing the SEM morhpology of wear track and cross section view of wear track.
The purpose of this study is to improve the wear resistance and hardness of Al alloy by making a formation of the thick surface hardening layers. The thick surface hardening layers were formed by PTAW(Plasma Transferred Arc Welding), with the addition of metal powders (Cu), ceramics powders (NbC, TiC), and mixture powders (Cu+NbC) in Al alloy (A1050, A5083). Mechanical properties of overlaid layers (wear resistance, hardness) were investigated in relation to the microstructure. The results obtained are summarized as follows: The depth of penetration was increased with increasing powder feeding rate. It is considered that these increase were due to the thermal pinch effect by the addition of powders, especially, for the Cu powders, were due to the heat of reaction with the matrix. The hardness and wear resistance of overlaid layers were improved with increasing powder feeding rate. For the Cu powders, it is considered that these increase were due to the increase of the formation of ${\theta}(CuAl_2)$ phase with increasing feeding rate of Cu powers.
The optimum thickness of Pd-Ni plated layers used as an electrical contact film was investigated by evaluating mechanical, thermal and environmental characteristics. The variations of morphologies and chemical compositions were studied by using SEM, EDS and ESCA. As a result of wear test, the wear resistance behavior of the gold plated layers was not changed with the sliding velocity changes. The palladium-nickel plated layer showed better wear resistance than the gold plated layer at low sliding velocity, but it showed poor wear resistance at high sliding velocity. Under the thermal condition of $400^{\circ}C$ in air, the gold thickness of $2\mu\textrm{m}$ without underplate on phosphorous bronze formed copper oxide on the surface layer by rapid diffusion of copper whereas the gold thickness of $0.8\mu\textrm{m}$ deposited on nickel and palladium-nickel underplate was stable at $400^{\circ}C$. Under the sulfur dioxide environments, the gold thickness of $0.3\mu\textrm{m}$ deposited on the nickel thickness of$ 3\mu\textrm{m}$ and the palladium-nickel thickness of $2\mu\textrm{m}$ underplate was more corrosion-resistant than the gold thickness of $2\mu\textrm{m}$ without underplate on phosphorous bronze. Under the nitric acid vapor environment, corrosion resistance of the gold film was superior to an equivalent thickness of the palladium-nickel film.
$Al_2O_3$coatings on mild steel substrate by plasma spray process were produced to evaluate microstructural characterization and mechanical properties. As-coated $Al_2O_3$coating samplessd were subjected to two heat treat-ment conditions : ⅰ) annealing under vacuum circumstance, ⅱ) hot press treated condition. The two heat treat-ed coatings were investigated in terms of microhardness, adhesion strength, wear resistance, porosity forma-tion, and microstructures. In the case of the coatings which were subject to preparation step ⅰ, the porosity in the coating was decreased with the increase of temperature ($700^{\circ}C$-$1100^{\circ}C$), and the wear resistance, microhardnesss and adhesion strength were increased with the increase of temperature. On the other hand, in the case of the coatings which were subject to preparation step ⅱ, wear resistance and adhesion strength were improved with the increase of temperature and pressure. Experimental measurements of coatings which were produced by both preparation conditions were enhanced compare to those of as-coated coatings.
Abrasive wear between piston ring face and cylinder liner is an extremely unpredictable and hard-to-reproduce phenomenon that significantly decreases engine performance. Wear by abrasion are forms of wear caused by contact between a particle and solid material. Abrasive wear is the loss of material by the passage of hard particles over a surface. From the pin-on-disk test, particle dent test and scuffing test, abrasive wear characteristics of diesel engine cylinder liner-piston ring have been investigated. Pin-on-disk test results indicate that abrasive wear resistance is not simply related to the hardness of materials, but is influenced also by the microstructure, temperature, lubricity and micro- fracture properties. In particle dent test, dent resistance stress decreases with increasing temperature. From the scuffing test by using pin-on-disk tester, scuffing mechanisms for the soft coating and hard coating were proposed and experimentally confirmed.
The wear behavior of epoxy matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles is discussed in this paper. Especially, the variation of the coefficient of friction and the wear resistance according to the change of apply load and sliding velocity were investigated for these materials. Wear tests of pin-on-disc mode were carried out and the wear test results exhibited as following ; The epoxy matrix composites showed lower coefficient of friction compared to the neat epoxy through the whole sliding distance. As increasing the sliding velocity the epoxy matrix composites indicated lower coefficient of friction, whereas the neat epoxy showed higher coefficient of friction as increasing the sliding velocity. The specific friction work of both materials were increased with apply load. In case of the epoxy matrix composites, the running in periods of friction were reduced as increase in apply load. The epoxy matrix composites were improved the wear resistance by adding the nano silica particles remarkably. It is expected that the load carrying capacity of the epoxy matrix composites will be improved by increase of Pv factor.
Abstract- In this paper tribological characteristics of solid and liquid phase sintered W/C-35%Ni tappets were investigated. Three test methods were performed to investigate the wear and surface damage mechanism of sintered tappets. First, block-on-ring wear test was performed to investigate the wear characteristics under pure sliding condition. Second, simplified cam and tappet tests (called component wear test hereafter) were carried out to simulate the real contact history of cam and tappet. Also, after the test, contact surfaces were analyzed with scanning electron microscope to study the wear mechanism. As a final screening, engine dynamo tests were performed. Results showed that in the block on ring sliding wear test, solid phase sintered specimens showed superior wear resistance to liquid phase sintered specimens. The component wear tests and engine dynamo tests also showed the same results. Therefore, in these tests, solid phase sintered tappet material revealed superior wear resistant properties to liquid phase sintered one.
In this study, STS 316L powders with 3 wt.% Cu and 1 wt.% Sn known as corrosion-resistance reinforcement elements, are prepared to make different kinds of specimens, in which, 3 wt.% Cu and 1 wt.% Sn are added in different forms by mixing, alloying and fully alloying. After sintering in the same condition, the corrosion resistance, wear resistance and their mechanical properties of specimens are tested respectively. According to the comparison, STS 316L specimen sintered at $1270^{\circ}C$ showed the most excellent mechanical property: HRB 78 (hardness), 1130.7 MPa (RCS), 26.6% (Fraction Wear), It was similar with the specimen made of STS316L and fully alloyed Cu and Sn powders, meanwhile, the latter one appears the best corrosion resistance, 75hrs-salt immersion test results. In addition, the specimens with Cu and Sn powders additive showed relatively worse wear resistance in compared with STS316L specimen.
