This study analyzed the damage to a slitting knife after cutting steel sheets. Damages to the structure were observed and wear tests were conducted. In addition, the degradation on the damaged and undamaged parts was compared with a micro Vickers hardness test. Weibull statistical analysis was carried out in order to evaluate the reliability of the micro Vickers hardness measured data. Spalling of the edge portion occurred by degradation during use over a long period. Rough parts in the specimens were caused by damage because the slitting knife was used for 1 year. The friction coefficient and wear loss at the damaged parts of the knife edge were slightly larger from shock due to repetitive cutting operation. The micro Vickers hardness followed a two-parameter Weibull probability distribution.
Various carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are added into the epoxy matrix as reinforcements to investigate the effect on the wear behavior. Effects to the tribological properties of different loading concentrations and types of surface modification are investigated by using a linear reciprocal wear tester. As increasing the concentration of CNTs shows the reduction of the wear loss. Moreover, surface modified CNTs give better tribological property than as produced CNTs. It is due that the functional groups on the surface of CNTs increase the interfacial bonding between CNTs and epoxy matrix through chemical bonding. Changes in worn surface morphology are observed by optical microscope and SEM to investigate the wear behavior. CNTs in the epoxy matrix near the surface are exposed and it becomes the lubricating working film on the worn surface. It reduces the friction and results in the lower surface roughness morphology in the epoxy matrix as increasing the contents of the CNTs.
Plasma-sprayed coatings were obtained by spray-dried $Cr_2O_3$ powder with and without Mo addition. A reciprocal type tribo-tester was employed to examine friction and wear behavior of the specimens at room temperature. The composition and the worn surface of coated specimens were observed by XRD and SEM. The results showed that friction Coefficient of the Mo added specimens were lower than one of $Cr_2O_3$ specimen. But $Cr_2O_3$ specimen had a lower wear loss. Protecting layer were observed at the worn surface of coated specimens with Mo addition.
Titanium nitride films have been prepared on various substrates (silicon wafer, HSS) by cathode arc ion plating process to measure microhardness, adhesion and wear-resistant behaviors by changing the substrate bias voltages (0∼-300V), thickness and roughness. Microhardnesses were measured by micro vickers hardness tester, the adhesion strengths were evaluated by acoustic signals through the scratch test with incremental applied load. As the substrate bias voltages were increased, the {111} orientation was predominant, the microhardnesses and adhesion strengths of tool steel were observed to be stronger than those of without subatrate bias voltage. Adhesion strengths of the substrate bias were 4-7 times higher than those of without the substrate bias, confirmed by SEM with EDX. Wear resistances were used pin-on-disk tribotester and TiN costing reduced the abrasive wear. As the substrate bias was increased, the weight loss and the friction coefficient was decreased.
The wear of the contact in the tappet accounts for the greatest portion of entire friction loss of an engine, leading to the occurrence of abnormal wear. The coated specimens for earn-tappet wear test were producted by using PVD-Sputtering coating method. It examined the friction characteristics occurring between the earn and the tappet by using the dedicated wear tester and found that the friction torque value was reduced through comparison testing with the existing part when the low friction coating was applied. So application of the low friction coating to actual vehicles will reduce the fuel economy and occurrence of noise-vibration.
0.087 wt.% Gd-lean duplex stainless steels were inert arc-melted and cast in a mold. The micro-hardnesses of the rolling, transverse, short transverse directions were 258.5, 292.3, 314.7 HV, respectively. The 33% cold rolled specimen had the crystallographic texture that mainly (100) pole was concentrated to normal direction and (110) pole was concentrated in the center of normal and rolling directions. The corrosion potential and corrosion rate in artificial sea water were in the range of $105.6-221.6mV_{SHE}$, $0.59-1.06mA/cm^2$, respectively. The friction coefficient and wear loss of the 0.087 wt.% Gd-lean duplex stainless steels in artificial sea water were about 67% and 65% lower than in air, whereas, the wear efficiency was 22% higher. The corrosion and wear behaviors of the 0.087 wt.% Gd-lean duplex stainless steels significantly depended on the gadolinium phases.
Plasma-sprayed coatings were prepared using by spray-dried Cr$_2$O$_3$ powder with and without MoO$_3$ addition. A reciprocal type tribe-tester was employed to examine friction and wear behavior of the specimens at room temperature. The worn surfaces of plasma spray coated specimens were observed by SEM. The results showed that friction coefficient of the MoO$_3$-added coatings were lower than those without MoO3 addition. However pure Cr$_2$O$_3$ coating showed the lowest wear loss at the self-mated test. The larger protecting layers were observed at the worn surface of plasma spray coated specimens with MoO$_3$ addition.
The tribological properties of the aluminum short fiber and glass fiber reinforced tin-bronze matrix composites manufactured by vacuum hot pressing was studied. The effect of the composition and the relative density on the wear properties was examined by a reciprocal type tribo-test machine. The results were discussed by the observation of the microstructure of sintered specimen and worn surface observation using SEM and EDS. Addition of the fibers led to the wear resistance since the metal matrix was reinforced by the fibers. The reinforcement of the fiber seemed to be stronger as the distribution of the fibers was more uniform. Graphite also reduce the wear loss. The pores in the sintered composites seemed to play an important role to improve the wear resistance since the pores provide the places where the solid lubricants locate.
Hydraulic servo cylinders have been used to control accurately a large machine in power plant. Especially, Piston head and bush of servo cylinder is assembled sleeve and piston head and bush made of Cu alloy and pad sealing part. A damages of sleeve and piston head, bush are caused by friction and wear. Thus, It is necessary to examine friction and wear characteristics of Cu alloys for the piston head and bush. In this study, to be reliable on the piston and cylinder parts, dry friction and wear experiments were carried out with Cu alloys of four kinds of AlBC, PBC, BC and BS using reciprocating friction tester of pin on disk type. From this study, the result was shown that the AlBC and PBC with alloy elements were excellent to resistance wear. As the sliding speed was increased, the wear loss of PBC decreased than another Cu alloy.
