A Study on the Optimum Image Capture of Wear Particle for Condition Monitoring of Machine (기계의 상태 모니터링을 위한 최적의 마멸분 영상 획득 방법에 관한 연구)

  • The wear particle analysis has been known as very effective method to foreknow and decide a moving situation and a damage of machine parts by using the digital computer image processing. But it was not laid down and trusted to calculate shape parameters of wear particle and wear volume. In order to apply image processing method in the foreknowledge and decision of lubricated condition, it needs to verify the reliability of the calculated data by the image processing and to lay down the number of images and the amount of wear particle in one image. In this study, the lubricated friction experiment was carried out in order to establish the optimum image capture with the SM45C specimen under experiment condition. The wear particle data were calculated differently according to the number of image and the amount of wear particle in one image.

  • Aluminum based metal matrix composites(MMCs) are well known for their high specific strength, stiffness and hardness. They are gaining further importance because of their high wear resistance. In this study, Al/Saffil-20%, Al/Saffil-5%/Al2O3(particle type)-15% and Al/Saffil-5%/SiC(particle type)-15% hybird MMCs' wear behavior were characterized by the pin-on-disk test under various normal load The superior wear resistance was exhibited at Al/Saffil-5%/SiC(particle type)-15% MMCs. And this MMCs' predominant wear mechanism is subsurface cracking in the low load wear regime. Others(Al/Saffil-20%, Al/Saffil-5%/Al2O3(particle type)-15%) showed the similar wear resistance with each other at the same test condition. In the low load & room temperature condition, the wear resistance was improved due to the high hardness of the ceramic reinforcements. As the test load increased, the wear properties were governed by the wear properties of matrix.

In order to describe morphology of various wear particle, the wear test was carried out under different experimental conditions. And fractal descriptors was applied to boundary and surface of wear particle with image processing system. These descriptors to analyze shape and surface wear particle are shape fractal dimension and surface fractal dimension. The shape fractal dimension can be derived from the boundary profile and surface fractal dimension can be determined by sum of intensity difference of surface pixel. The morphology of wear particles can be effectively obtained by two fractal dimensions.

  • Fractal dimension is the method to measure the roughness and the irregularity of something that cannot be defined obviously by Euclidean dimension. And the analysis method of this dimension don't need perfect, accurate boundary and color like analysis lot diameter, perimeter, aspect or reflectivity of wear particles or surface. If we arranged the morphological characteristic of various wear particle by using the characteristic of fractal dimension, it might be very efficient to the diagnosis of driving condition.   • To study deleterious effects of contaminants contained in lubricating systems, the effects of fine alumina particle concentration and size on the critical failure load, friction and wear characteristic were examined on boundary lubrication condition using the four ball machine. The following conclusions are deduced: The abrasive is found to cause a transition from mild wear to severe wear at less severe conditions than with clean oil. In mild wear region the friction and wear increase with particle size and concentration, but in severe wear region do not exhibit any definite trend. In relation to film thinckness there is a threshold of particle size beyond which the failure load no longer decreases with particle size.

  • The effect of particle sizes of the metal matrix composites containing 10 wt.%SiCp was investigated with using various tools. The results showed that tool life decreased considerably with increasing particle size and cutting speed. The wear resistance of TiC-coated tools was considerably higher than that of the other tools. It was observed that abrasive wear was the main responsible mechanism for wear of the tool thermal cracks were at high speed while a built-edge formation was also evident at lower speed.

  • Wherever there are rotating equipment and contact between surface, there is wear and the generation of wear particles. The particles contained in the lubricating oil carry detailed and important information about the condition monitoring of the machine. This information may be deduced from particle shape, composition, size distribution, and concentration. Therefore, This paper was undertaken to Ferrography system of wear debris generated from lubricated moving machine surface. The lubricating wear test was performed under different experimental conditions using the Falex wear test of Pin and V-Block type by Ti(C, N) coated. It was shown from the test results that wear particle concentration (WPC) and wear severity Index( $I_{S}$), size distribution in normal and abnormal wear have come out all the higher value by increases sliding friction time. Wear shape is observed on the Ferrogram it was discovered a thin leaf wear debris as well as ball and plate type wear particles. This kind of large wear shape have an important effect not only metals damage, but also seizure phenomenon.

  • Environmental factors affect parts of the automobile. When dust particles are embedded, specially, friction and wear of the rubber-seal in automobile chassis system are increased. Increase in friction and wear leads to weakness of component and reduction of mechanical life. In this study, the wear characteristics of rubber-seal for inflow of dust particles are investigated. Silica($SiO_2$) and alumina($Al_2O_3$) particles are used as a dust particle because these particles are main elements of dust particles. The sliding wear tester are used for investigate the wear characteristics of rubber-seal. If the single dust particle($SiO_2$) is embedded in the rubber-seal component, the influence of dust particle size is more than that of inflow rate on the wear characteristics of rubber-seal. If the mixed dust particles are embedded in the rubber-seal component, the wear rate is increased as the rate of alumina that has a bigger hardness is increased. If the mixed dust particles that have different hardness are embedded in the rubber-seal component, the influence of particle size is more than that of particle hardness.
