As information becomes more sophisticated with the advancing technology of our times, the usability of software is considered an important factor. However, the research on usability of weapons system software graphical user interfaces (GUIs) remains insufficient. For this reason, this paper focuses on developing checklists for the usability of GUIs in weapons systems. In the first step, design principles are collected from various design guidelines on usability and from career soldiers. In the second step, a survey is conducted for factor analysis, and in the third step, factor analysis is conducted on 12 principles, with two principles excluded, as a result, due to less correlation with weapons system usability. In Step 4, the weights for design characteristics and design principles are derived using AHP. In the final step, the checklists are developed by mapping the GUI design factors and from the results of factor analysis. This research could be utilized as a foundation for usability evaluation of GUIs in weapons systems.
Defense M&S for weapons effectiveness is a realistic way to support virtual warfare similar to real warfare. As the war paradigm becomes platform-centric to network-centric, people try to utilize smartphones as the source of sensor, and command/control data in the simulation-based weapons effectiveness analysis. However, there have been limited researches on integrating smartphones into the weapon simulators, partly due to high modeling cost - modeling cost to accomodate client-server architecture, and re-engineering cost to adapt the simulator on various devices and platforms -, lack of efficient mechanisms to exchange large amount of simulation data, and low-level of security. In this paper, we design and implement Smartphone Adaptor to utilize smartphones for the simulationbased weapons effectiveness analysis. Smartphone Adaptor automatically sends sensor information, GPS and motion data of a client's smartphone to a simulator and receives simulation results from the simulator on the server. Also, we make it possible for data to be transferred safely and quickly through JSON and SEED. Smartphone Adaptor is applied to OpenSIM (Open simulation engine for Interoperable Models) which is an integrated simulation environment for weapons effectiveness analysis, under development of our research team. In this paper, we will show Smartphone Adaptor can be used effectively in constructing a Live simulation, with an example of a chemical simulator.
Nuclear issue is a good example showing globalization of the international regime. The history showed nuclear weapons may cause the extinction of human races when the first nuclear bombs fell down to Japan in August, 1945 and people became increasingly eager to achieve peace. Military buildup for national security is a matter of existence in the international society. However, disarmament or arms control to secure international peace and safety which is also the purpose of the Charter of the United Nations may be the most important task for us to realize peace of the mankind. Today, disarmament, together with amicable settlement of international conflicts and collective security system, is an important means to maintain and promote international peace and safety. It might be our permanent task to realize complete disarmament but, as the Preamble of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) expressed general and complete disarmament, the international society has clarified its effort for complete disarmament. Thus, taking a look into the international regime on the nuclear issue and progress related to the nuclear issue in North Korea, the study was intended to introduce the globalization of the nuclear issue, review the international effort for nuclear disarmament based on the concept of the 'common heritage of the mankind' and with respect to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and controls over nuclear weapons, and then evaluate the North Korean nuclear issue, which is in direct relation with South Korea and international laws, in terms of the space law and disarmament acts. The collective security system along with policies to prevent dissemination of nuclear weapons should also be emphasized and implemented to cope with the North Korean nuclear issue.
The 30mm anti-aircraft gun has been developed with various types of weapon systems such as protective, protective complex, and wheel-type anti-aircraft artillery. The role of this anti-aircraft gun is an important anti-aircraft weapon in charge of air defense. Anti-aircraft weapons are tasked with defending the airspace from aircraft attacks. In particular, anti-aircraft weapons are organized in combination with mechanized units. And anti-aircraft weapons are prone to attack by enemies because they operate on the front lines of the battlefield. The enemy is expected to attack our troops by covering up or concealing as much as possible in order to increase their viability. Therefore, this study analyzed whether our 30mm anti-aircraft bullets could subdue the enemy in cover. This study analyzed the performance of 30mm anti-aircraft bullets using the M&S technique. For this study, live shooting and simulation method by M&S were used for the experiment. In this study, steel plate and plywood were used for the live shooting experiment. In addition, in the simulation process through M&S, this study used the PRODAS model, AUTODYN model, and Split-x model to analyze the trajectory, penetration, and fragmentation capability of 30mm anti-aircraft bullets. According to the experimental results, it has been proven that 30mm anti-aircraft bullets can destroy enemy armored vehicles. 30mm anti-aircraft bullets succeeded in quickly subduing enemies concealed in general buildings or forests. In this way, it was possible to minimize damage to allies in advance.

Naval weapons systems of the Republic of Korea are acquired through the Defense Planning Management System. Recently, acquisition of some naval ships have been delayed, and the causes of the delays have been recognized as inappropriate project management at the Execution Phase. However, we argue that the delay problem in naval ships acquisition should be approached, with due regard for the entire Defense Planning Management System. That is, We should try to investigate from Planning Phase to those of Programming, Budgeting and Execution Phases. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the actual cases of the delay in naval acquisition at all phases of the Defense Planning Management System. Based on the investigation, we tried to identify the naval ship Acquisition Delay Factors and find out the Weights of those factors. As the next step, we calculated the Influence Measures on the naval missions, including the Cost of Naval Capability Gap derived from the delays in acquisition of naval ships. As a final step, we calculated the Acquisition Delay Measures based on the interrelationship between the Acquisition Delay Factors and the Influence Measures. Then we evaluated and analyzed what the results stand for. Finally, we made suggestions for future improvement. The improvement suggestions we made for preventing delay in acquisition of naval ships in this study are as follows. First, we need a shift in perception. It is necessary to measure the Acquisition Delay Factors in acquiring naval ships and manage them from the Planning Phase. Second, resolution must be concerted efforts. All relevant agencies, not just a few, should work together to resolve the problems of acquisition delay. Third, analysis must be based on the accumulation of data. This allows the elaborating of naval ship Acquisition Delay Factors and Delay Measures. If this research method is applied to other military weapons systems in the future, we may be able to not just identify the Acquisition Delay Factors in acquisition of other military weapons systems, but also pursue improvement in those cases.

Recently, the development of weapons systems in conjunction with the Fourth Industrial Revolution has increased the number of weapon systems that integrate individual commercial systems by actively incorporating the superior fields of private commercial technologies. In the case of such commercial product-based weapons systems, however, the development of ILS elements across all areas, such as technical manual, military field maintenance support equipment, interactive electronic technical manual (IETM), and Computer Based Training (CBT) development, and weapons system Reliability, Availability, Maintainability(RAM) target values, and logistics support analysis (LSA) was requested to expand the level of development by developers. The commercial product-based System Integration (SI) weapon system will be able to complete the comprehensive military balance for complementing and effective maintenance of the military and developers only when the ILS development, which is limited to the essential elements of the required group, Request For Proposal (RFP) and Post-Logistics Support (PLS) directions were applied in the framework of outsourcing maintenance implementation. As a result, by checking the operation status of current weapons systems, the logistics support of commercial product-based weapon systems selected outsourcing as the basic policy that is decided based on the development requirements, focusing on maintaining operation through a rational decision-making process, and presented a plan for applying the development plan to the RFP for the determined core elements and PLS.
We examined component analysis and lead isotope ratio analysis to find out the relationship between the excavation and the production site of 25 bronze weapons from prehistoric ages. All 25 bronze weapons are ternary alloys of copper-tin-lead and lead is artificially added. The lead isotope ratios of 25 bronze weapons show that bronze are made by raw materials in the southern regions of the Korean Peninsula, including northern China. The raw materials of narrow-shaped bronze dagger are supplied in zone 1-3 and northern China. In addition, provenance of lead for bronze halberd and pearhead are the rest of the region except for zone 1 and zone 4. Silver are enriched in most samples and zinc and cobalt are deficient. Arsenic and antimony detected only specific samples and can be used as critical parameter for provenance study. Lead isotopes and trace elements of archaeological bronzes will provide conservation scientist with useful tool to study the provenance of raw materials
As recent advances in science, technology and performance requirements of the weapons system are getting highly diversified and complex, the performance requirements also get stringent and strict. Moreover, the weapons system should be intimately connected with other systems such as watchdog system, command and control system, C4I system, etc. However, a tremendous amount of time, cost and risk being spent to acquire new weapons system, and not being diminished compared to the rapid pace of its development speed. Defense Modeling and Simulation(M&S) comes into the spotlight as an alternative to overcoming these difficulties as well as constraints. In this paper, we propose the development process of virtual test framework based on the synthetic environment as a tool to analyze the effectiveness of the weapons system of underwater engagement model. To prove the proposed concept, we develop the test-bed of virtual test using Delta3D simulation engine, which is open source S/W. We also design the High Level Architecture and Real-time Infrastructure(HLA/RTI) based Federation for the interoperation with heterogeneous simulators. The significance of the study entails (1)the rapid and easy development of simulation tools that are customized for the Korean Theater of War; (2)the federation of environmental entities and the moving equations of the combat entities to manifest a realistic simulation.

What was the reason why Apple, a mere "rookie", got ahead of all the veterans before it? What influence will the newly released Ipad have? This writing will cover why people are clamoring over Iphones and Ipads. In addition, it will also discuss if Apple will be able to challenge Google's dominance on the web world using Ipods, Iphones, Ipads as weapons.
The Korean defense industry was brought up in the government policy since 1970's. The important parts of defense industrial technologies have not been developed, and usually introduced from overseas. Moreover, the development of advanced technologies was not actively stimulated or pursued, consequently shaping the current structure of the defense industry which lacks global competitiveness due to the dearth of high technologies necessary for high-technology weapons. This research analyzes the systems of the Korean defense industry through a systems thinking approach in order to understand the whole mechanism and to find ways to improve the defense industry. Finding some leverages is the main purpose of systems thinking, that yields desirable results with a little effort. The three policy leverages are: (1) the policy for timely fielding; (2) the R&D investment for development and production of domestic high-technology weapons; and (3) the policy measures for exports. The research findings will contribute to the invigorating and developing the Korean defense industry by providing policy-makers and acquisition practitioners with systematic understanding and insight into the dynamics of the defense industry for them to make and execute efficient policies taking into account the Korean overall defense industry.
