The swirl flame is mostly used to stabilize the flame on the burner nozzle in the industrial combustor. In the case of the weak swirl flame(S<0.4), the recirculation zone could not be formed, but in the strong swirl(S>0.6) flame, it could be formed in the center of the swirl flame. In this study, the measurement and analysis of emission species, temperature, radicals of premixed swirl flame in the combustor were performed to understand the NO formation and emission characteristics of the swirl flame of natural gas. The result of NO emission in the swirl flame is that the amount of NO emission in the strong swirl flame decreased about 60% compared with that of the weak swirl flame. The main region of NO formation of the weak swirl flame is positioned in the down stream(z=100~200mm) of the flame, but that of the strong swirl flame is positioned in the up stream(z=40mm) where the recirculation zone seems to be formed. It is supposed that the increase of flame surface and the formation of inversed flame cause the reduction of the high temperature region on the production of NO in the strong swirl flame. The result of NO-temperature relation revealed that the factor of NO formation is not only temperature but also another parameters in the weak swirl flame, but in the strong swirl flame, NO is proportional to the temperature of higher than 1200K.

In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the characteristics of flame stabilization of the LFG mixing gas. LFG has merely half heating value compared with liquified natural gas but can be greatly utilized as a commercial fuel. In order to use LFG in practical combustors, Webbe Index and heating value of LFG mixing gas were adjusted by mixing LPG with LFG. The comparisons were conducted between CH$_4$and LFG mixing gas for searching the region of flame stabilization based upon the flame blowout at maximum fuel stream velocity. As a result, the flame stability of LFG mixing gas was not improved with that of CH$_4$in non-swirl and weak swirl diffusion flame. However, LFG mixing gas had wide flame stabilization region rather than CH$_4$with increasing ambient flow rate in strong swirl. It was also found that flame stability was affected by included quantity of inert gas such as CO$_2$in the weak swirl but by heating value of fuel in strong swirl.
This study presents the combustion characteristics and flame structure of annular swirling flow when there were changes the equivalence ratio and swirl number of swirling jet of fuelair mixture. The conclusions of this study are as follows; During the investigations in which the change of equivalence ratio and swirl number were studied, three basic shapes of flame were observed in this study. Visible flame lengths of swirling jet results in the decrease with increasing of swirl number and air-fuel ratio of mixture. Radial distribution of flame temperature with strong swirl is higher than that of weak swirl at the same equivalence ratio of mixture. The angle of spread of the annular jet increases with the increase of swirl number. When the swirl intensity is increased in a jet, the decay of concentration of carbon dioxide is decreased with the distance from nozzle exit of burner.
Landfill gas has merely half heating value compared with liquified natural gas but can be greatly utilized as a commercial fuel. The authors have examined emission characteristics as well as measured burning velocity of LFG mixed gas which contains plenty of $CO_{2}$. With the viewpoint of fuel utilization, flame stability could be one of important characteristics of LFG. In this study, the comparison experiments are conducted between $CH_{4}$ and LFG for searching the region of flame stabilization based upon the flame blowout at maximum fuel stream velocity. As a result, it is found that stabilization region of LFG is not improved with that of $CH_{4}$ in non-swirl/or weak swirl jet diffusion flame. However, it is also known that flame stability is hardly affected by inert gas in the strong swirl with considering widened flame stabilization region of LFG rather than LNG.
Recently, many researches have been performed to improve the performance of the combustion and emission in a D.I.Diesel engine. And many new techniques have been introduced and developed to reduce NO$_{x}$ and soot exhausted from diesel combustion. Some of these methods have the peculiar injection timing which is not used to traditional timing. To optimize these injection timing, characteristics of swirl flow and interaction of swirl with injection in the diesel engine should be investigated more carefully. Therefore, in this study, 2-zone energy method is adopted for the understanding of swirl flow in condition of moving piston, and then flame visualizations and image process are performed. From these studies, the characteristics of the swirl flow generated by SCV was investigated and the effect of swirl on injection timing was elucidated. As the results, velocity distribution caused by swirl flow increase the space utilization rate of flame plums. And flame plums of weak momentum are remained inside of combustion chamber by the swirl flow.w.
The isothermal flow structure and mixing characteristics of a hybrid/dual swirl jet combustor for micro-gas turbine were numerically investigated. Location of pilot nozzle, angle and direction of swirl vane were varied as main parameters with constant fuel flow rates for each nozzle. As a result, the variation in location of pilot nozzle resulted in significant change in turbulent flow field near burner exit, in particular, center toroidal recirculation zone (CTRZ) as well as turbulent intensity, and thus flame stability and emission characteristics might be significantly changed. The swirl angle of $45^{\circ}$ provided similar recirculating flow patterns in a wide range of equivalence ratio (0.5~1.0). Compared to the co-swirl flow, the counter-swirl flow leaded to the reduction in CTRZ and fuel-air mixing near the burner exit and a weak interaction between the pilot partially premixed flame and the lean premixed flame. With the comparison of experimental results, it was confirmed that the case of co-swirl flow and swirl $angle=45^{\circ}$ would provided an optimized combustor performance in terms of flame stability and pollutant emissions.
To optimize the intake flow condition in the heavy-duty LPG SI engine, five different swirl ratios of intake port were investigated experimentally by oil spot method, LDV and single cylinder engine test. The flow characteristics near the piston surface were observed by oil spot method and magnitudes of swirl flow were measured quantatively by LDV method in the steady flow rig. The engine performances of various swirl flow were also tested with the heavy-duty LPG SI single cylinder engine. In the results, high swirl ratio, above $R_s$=2.3, was not suitable to develope a stable flame kernel and to produce high engine performance. Especially it was more serious under lean burn conditions, since turbulence intensity was smaller than bulk flow though those are increased together. These results were also confirmed by LDV measurement and oil spot method. On the contrary, low swirl ratio($R_s$=1.3) is not good to propagate a flame since the turbulence intensity and bulk flow are vanished during compression stroke and low swirl ratio has too weak initial energy for stable combustion. Therefore, the of optimized swirl ratio f3r the heavy-duty LPG engine in this work was found around $R_s$=2.0.
An experimental study was carried out in two laboratory-scale reactors to investigate the effect of heating rate on the behavior of flame front in a pulverized coal flame. Each. reactors had different heating mechanisms. For reactor A losing large heat through transparent quartz wall. pulverized coal particles were ignited by secondary air of 1050K. Flame front could be visualized through the transparent wall. Reactor B was insulated with castable refractory to minimize the heat loss through the reactor wall and accompanied with secondary air of 573K. Flame front was estimated from the gas temperature and species concentration measured using R-type thermocouple(Pt-Pt/Rh 13%) and gas chromatograph at various coal-air ratios and swirl intensities. The flame front position was closely related with the magnitude of heating rate. The heating rate for lifted flame was of the order of $10^4$ to $10^5K/s$ and for coal Ignition at least over $10^4K/s$. The heating mechanism had little impact on the extinction limits. The weak swirl number of 0.68 forced the flame front to move toward the upstream by the rapid mixing of coal and air. The primary/secondary momentum ratio was an inappropriate variable to distinct the liftoff of flame.
A numerical study was carried out to analyze the effect of flow distribution of stirred part and plug flow part on combustion efficiency at the coal gasification process in an entrained bed coal reactor. The model of computation was based on gas phase eulerian balance equations of mass and momentum. The solid phase was described by lagrangian equations of motion. The $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was used to calculate the turbulence flow and eddy dissipation model was used to describe the gas phase reaction rate. The radiation was solved using a Monte-Carlo method. One-step parallel two reaction model was employed for the devolatilization process of a high volatile bituminous Kideco coal. The computations agreed well with the experiments, but the flame front was closer to the burner than the measured one. The flow distribution of a stirred part and a plug flow part in a reactor was a function of the magnitude of recirculation zone resulted from the swirl. The combustion efficiency was enhanced with decreasing stirred part and the maximum value was found around S=1.2, having the minimum stirred part. The combustion efficiency resulted from not only the flow distribution but also the particle residence time through the hot reaction zone of the stirred part, in particular for the weak swirl without IRZ(internal recirculation zone) and the long lifted flame.
