  • A respiration is one of the most useful techniques for vital checking and an abnormal respiration is often the earliest sign of critical illness. Detection of respiration is based on the photo-plethysmography (PPG) with photodiode technique. Because PPG sensor using photodiode can be easily miniaturized, it is suitable for wearable devices. A system to measure respiration rate based on PPG signal is implemented and for a reliable measurement an improved algorithm in accuracy using PPG signal pattern is proposed in this paper. As results regarding to three types of respirations (regular interval, free interval, and weak respiration) the proposed algorithm showed error rate of 0.047, 0.067, and 0.122 respectively.

  • In this paper, a sequential detection scheme is proposed as a combination of a novel weak-signal and a locally optimum(LO) detection schemes. In Part 1, we propose a novel sequential detection scheme for weak signals and show some interesting threshold properties and examples. In Part 2, the performance of the proposed sequential detection scheme is compared with that of the fixed sample size(FSS) test, sequential probability ratio test (SPRT), and truncated sequential probability ratio test(TSPRT).

  • In this paper, we propose a modified iterative pre-whitening projection statistics (MIPPS) scheme for improving multi-target detection performance in non-homogeneous clutter environments. As a non-homogeneity detection (NHD) technique of space-time adaptive processing algorithm for airborne radar, the MIPPS scheme improves the average detection probability of weak target when multiple targets with different reflection signal intensities are located in close range. Numerical results show that the conventional NHD schemes suffers from the masking effect by strong targets and clutters and the proposed MIPPS scheme outperforms the conventional schemes with respect to the average detection probability of the weak target at low signal-to-clutter ratio.

  • GIS(Gas insulated switching gear) is power equipment with excellent dielectric strength and is economy merit in high confidence and stability. Recently, because equipment of GIS was occurring problem of confidence used for a long time, partial discharge on-line diagnosis systems have been importantly recognized. Partial discharge (PD) detection is an effective means for monitoring and evaluation of dielectric condition of gas insulated system (GIS). The ultra-high-frequency (UHF) PD detection technique can detect and locate the PD sources inside GIS by detecting electromagnetic wave emitted from PD source. Therefore, real-time diagnostic system using UHF detection method has been developed for this application is being expanded gradually. However, the signal of partial discharge occurring in SF6 gas is very weak and susceptible to external noises which mainly consist of PD in air. Thus, it is important to distinguish the PD in SF6 gas more sensitively from the external noises. Unfortunately, these external noise signals and the partial discharge signals have very similar characteristics. Therefore, to solve this problem, we need the signal processing method for distinguish partial discharge signals with external noise signals for improvement of SNR(signal to noise ratio) and sensitivity. In this paper, we proposed internal signal processing method for removing external noise signals with built-in pre.amplifier and frequency conversion circuit.

  • Electronic warfare systems for extracting information of the threat signals can be employed under the circumstance where the power of the received signal is weak. To precisely and rapidly detect the threat signals, it is required to use methods exploiting whole energy of the received signals instead of conventional methods using a single received signal input. To utilize the whole energy, numerous sizes of windows need to be implemented in a detector for dealing with all possible unknown length of the received signal because it is assumed that there is no preliminary information of the uncooperative signals. However, this grid search method requires too large computational complexity to be practically implemented. In order to resolve this complexity problem, an approach that reduces the number of windows by selecting the smaller number of representative windows can be considered. However, each representative window in this approach needs to cover a certain amount of interval divided from the considering range. Consequently, the discordance between the length of the received signal and the window sizes results in degradation of the detection performance. Therefore, we propose the weighted energy detector which results in improved detection performance comparing with the conventional energy detector under circumstance where the window size is smaller than the length of the received signal. In addition, it is shown that the proposed method exhibits the same performance under other circumstances.

  • This paper is the basic research to identify automatically signals that are less than the bandwidth of 200Hz in shortwave band between 3 to 7 MHz and rarely appear. In order to do so, first, we describe the Detection and Estimation method of testing for the presence of absence about OOK signals of odB degree in 100KHz bandwidth. In the course of Detection and Estimation, it has decided the presence of OOK modulation Signal in additive noise to about 77% using LOD and E-C and about 90% using pattern model method of correlation function.

  • In view of the fact that gas insulated switchgear (GIS) is an important piece of equipment in a substation, it is highly desirable to continuously monitor the state of equipment by measuring the partial discharge (PD) activity in a GIS, as PD is a symptom of an insulation weakness/breakdown. However, since the PD signal is relatively weak and the external noise makes detection of the PD signal difficult, it therefore requires careful attention in its detection. In this paper, the algorithm for detection of PD in the GIS using the wavelet transform (WT) is proposed. The WT provides a direct quantitative measure of the spectral content and dynamic spectrum in the time-frequency domain. The most appropriate mother wavelet for this application is the Daubechies 4 (db4) wavelet. 'db4', the most commonly applied mother wavelet in the power quality analysis, is very well suited to detecting high frequency signals of very short duration, such as those associated with the PD phenomenon. The proposed algorithm is based on utilizing the absolute sum value of coefficients, which are a combination of D1 (Detail 1) and D2 (Detail 2) in multiresolution signal decomposition (MSD) based on WT after noise elimination and normalization.

  • Plasma etching is used in various semiconductor processing steps. In plasma etcher, optical- emission spectroscopy (OES) is widely used for in-situ endpoint detection. However, the sensitivity of OES is decreased if polymer is deposited on viewport or the proportion of exposed area on the wafer is too small. Because of these problems, the object is to investigate the suitability of using plasma impedance monitoring (PIM) and self plasma optical emission spectrocopy (SPOES) with statistical approach for in-situ endpoint detection. The endpoint was determined by impedance signal variation from I-V monitor (VI probe) and optical emission signal from SPOES. However, the signal variation at the endpoint is too weak to determine endpoint when $SiO_2$ and SiNx layers are etched by fluorocarbon on inductive coupled plasma (ICP) etcher, if the proportion of $SiO_2$ and SiNx area on Si wafer are small. Therefore, modified principal component analysis (mPCA) is applied to them for increasing sensitivity. For verifying this method, detected endpoint from impedance monitoring is compared with optical emission spectroscopy.

  • Passive sonar system is designed to classify the underwater targets by analyzing and comparing the various acoustic characteristics such as signal strength, bandwidth, number of tonals and relationship of tonals from the extracted tonals and frequency lines. First of all the precise detection and extraction of signal frequency lines is of particular importance for enhancing the reliability of target classification. But, the narrowband frequency lines which are the line formed in spectrogram by a tonal of constant frequency in each frame can be detected weakly or discontinuously because of the variation of signal strength and transmission loss in the sea. Also, it is very difficult to detect and extract precisely the signal frequency lines by the complexity of impulsive ambient noise and signal components. In this paper, the automatic detection and extraction method that can detect and extract the signal components of frequency tines precisely are proposed. The proposed method can be applied under the bad conditions with weak signal strength and high ambient noise. It is confirmed by the simulation using real underwater target data.
