Background and Objectives Among the numerous available therapies, the usefulness of laser treatment has been proven in melasma, especially for refractory to topical agents or chemical peels. This study evaluated the effectiveness of 694-nm wavelength fractional toning ruby laser in melasma presenting on the malar area. Materials and Methods This was a retrospective study of 40 melasma patients treated with 694-nm wavelength ruby fractional toning laser for a total of 8 cycles at intervals of 2 to 3 weeks. Two independent investigators assessed the photographic findings and evaluated the severity of melasma by applying the Melasma Severity Scale (MSS). Subject satisfaction score was also surveyed at every visit. Results After the 4th treatment, subjects were continuously satisfied with their results. At the 8th visit and 1-month after the last treatment, MSS was determined to be significantly improved as compared to the first visit. One case of minor hypopigmentation was reported, but was resolved after one month. Conclusion Application of 694-nm wavelength fractional toning ruby laser for treating melasma on the malar area showed significant improvement in the MSS. Moreover, the treatment could be repeatedly applied, with low complication rate and significant patient satisfaction.

Metachromatic properties of admixture of thionine and methylene blue(MB) in aqueous solution and phospholipid bilayer membrane have been studied by absorption spectroscopy. When thionine and MB were mixed, new coaggregate has been formed because of MB was redistributed to thionine aggregate. In phosphlipid bilayer membrane system, the highly concentrated thionine was easily formed the coaggregation with MB moiety independent of MB concentration, and absorption band of admixture were more transferred to short wavelength than aqueous system. In monomeric thionine concentration, the coaggregation band was observed at the middle wavelength between the site of monomeric thionine and the site of dimeric MB in the presence of lipid bilayer membrane.

Using the reflectivity mode of an optical microscope, we analyzed the optical contrast to identify the layer number of flakes of hexagonal boron nitride on a $SiO_2$/Si substrate. Overall optical contrast in the visible range varies with the thickness of flakes. However, the wavelength of zero contrast exhibits a linear redshift of 0.53 nm per layer, independent of the $SiO_2$ thickness, and increases proportionally with $SiO_2$thickness. Experiments show good agreement with calculations and the results of AFM measurements. These results show that this zero-contrast approach is more accurate and easier than the reflectivity-contrast approach using the overall optical contrast.
Spectrophotometry of the night sky over Mount Bohyun is presented for the nearly entire visible wavelengths of $3600{\~}$8600{\AA}$. The data was obtained under moonless clear sky in February 2004 with the 1.8-m telescope and the long slit spectrograph. The sky spectrum shows a number of strong emission lines originated from light pollution, especially due to high pressure sodium lamps. When compared to the night sky of Kitt Peak, our sky continuum is 1 to 2 magnitude brighter at all wavelengths, the worst being around the broad emission region near 6000${\AA}$. The night sky spectrum presented here with almost complete line identifications is a useful reference for arc-independent wavelength calibrations to check the gravity flexure of the spectrograph and the wavelength shift between FeNeArHe arc frames and science frames.
Many numerical methods have been developed since 1961, but unresolved issues remain. This study developed a numerical method to address these issues and determine the coefficients and properties of rotational waves with a shear current in a finite water depth. The number of unknown constants was reduced significantly by introducing a wavelength-independent coordinate system. The reference depth was calculated independently using the shooting method. Therefore, there was no need for partial derivatives with respect to the wavelength and the reference depth, which simplified the numerical formulation. This method had less than half of the unknown constants of the other method because Newton's method only determines the coefficients. The breaking limit was calculated for verification, and the result agreed with the Miche formula. The water particle velocities were calculated, and the results were consistent with the experimental data. Dispersion relations were calculated, and the results are consistent with other numerical findings. The convergence of this method was examined. Although the required series order was reduced significantly, the total error was smaller, with a faster convergence speed.
In this paper, we proposed an optical true time-delay (TTD) for planar phased array antennas (PAAs), which is composed of a wavelength-dependent optical true time delay (WDOTTD) followed by a wavelength-independent optical true time delay (WIOTTD). The WDOTTD is a fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) Prism and the WDOTTD is a fiber delay-lines matrix of which each component consists of a certain length of fiber connected to cross-ports of a 2${\times}$2 MEMS switch. A 10-GHz 2-bit${\times}$4-bit two-dimensional optical TTD has been fabricated by cascading a WDOTTD with a maximum time delay of 810 ps to a WIOTTD of $\pm$50 ps. Time delay and insertion loss for each radiation angle have been measured. Time delay error for the WIOTTD has been measured to be less than $\pm$1 ps. We have also designed a two-dimensional 10-GHz PAA composed of 8${\times}$8 microstrip patch antenna elements driven by the proposed TTD. The radiation patterns of this PAA have been obtained by simulation and analyzed.
Surface emissivity and its background values according to each sensor are mandatorily necessary for Mid-Wavelength Infrared (MWIR) remote sensing to retrieve surface temperature and temporal variation. This study presents the methods and results of Land Surface Emissivity (LSE) of the MWIR according to land cover over the Korean Peninsula. The MWIR emissivity was estimated by applying the Temperature Independent Spectral Indices (TISI) method to the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) band 4 Day/Night images ($3.74{\mu}m$ in center wavelength). The obtained values were classified according to land-cover types, and the obtained emissivity was then compared with those calculated from a standard Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) spectral library. The annual means of MWIR emissivity of Deciduous Broadleaf Forest (0.958) and Mixed Forest (0.935) are higher than those of Croplands (0.925) and Natural Vegetation Mosaics (0.935) by about 2-3%. The annual mean of Urban area is the lowest (0.914) with an annual variation of about 2% which is by larger than those (1%) of other land-covers. The TISI and VIIRS based emissivity is slightly lower than the ASTER spectral library by about 2-3% supposedly due to various reasons such as lack of land cover homogeneity. The results will be used to understand the MWIR emissivity properties of the Korean Peninsula and to examine the seasonal and other environmental changes using MWIR images.
In optoelectronic devices including displays and solar cells that convert electricity into light or light into electricity, it is important to control optical behavior of light to improve device efficiency. Specifically, the control of internal emitting light in the OLEDs can induce more light to go out, improving luminous efficiency. In addition, the control of optical behavior of incident light in solar cells can increase optical path in the light absorption layer, increasing power-conversion efficiency. In this study, we generated wrinkles as a physical structure to control optical behavior of light and independently controlled their wavelength and height by changing stress relaxation time. To explore the effect of wavelength and height on optical behavior, we conducted UV/Vis spectroscopy analysis of wrinkles with various heights at a constant wavelength or various wavelengths at a comparable height, figuring out a wrinkle with high aspect ratio has more dispersive light and less straight light. It indicates that high aspect ratio is required to change the optical behavior and increase the optical path.
Performances of spectrum-sliced channels are strongly affected by their relative intensity noise (RIN). We use polarization-independent optical modulators (PIOMs) for spectrum-sliced channels to suppress their RIN. The PIOM driven by a high sinusoidal voltage signal evenly redistributes optical frequency components in the spectral domain and reduces the RIN. It can be used at a broadband light source (BLS) output to produce spectrum-sliced channels having lower RIN values. Also, it can be used for each spectrum-sliced channel within each optical network unit (ONU). In our experiment, where 12.5-GHz-spaced spectrum-sliced channels are used in 1-GbE speed, the use of PIOM at the BLS output reduces the bit error rate (BER) of the spectrum-sliced channel by more than an order of magnitude. The use of PIOM within the ONU reduces the BER by approximately 3 orders of magnitude.
We demonstrate an ultrathin metamaterial for polarization independent perfect absorption as well as a band-pass filter (BPF) which works at a higher frequency band compared to the perfect absorption band. The planar metamaterial is comprised of three layers, symmetric split ring resonators (SSRRs) at the front and structured ground plane (SGP) at the back separated by a dielectric layer. The perfect metamaterial absorber (MA) can realize near 100% absorption due to high electromagnetic losses from the electric and/or magnetic resonances within a certain frequency band. The thickness of the structure is only 1/28 of the maximum absorption wavelength.
