Design and Fabrication of an End-Launched Rectangular Waveguide Adapter Fed by a Coaxial Loop

  • An end-launched adapter combining a coaxial loop within a rectangular waveguide has been analyzed and designed. The accurate electromagnetic modeling of input impedance for the adapter design has been developed using a modal analysis method. Also, design parameters to improve the end-launched adapter have been investigated. Numerical and experimental results of the proposed model have been compared with the results of previous works, and verified by an electromagnetic simulator of High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). The input voltage standing wave ratios (VSWRs) are smaller than 2 over the wide frequency band from 7.5 GHz to 10.5 GHz.

Scan Element Pattern and Scan Impedance of Open-Ended Waveguide Away Antenna (개방형 도파관 배열 안테나의 조향 소자 패턴 및 조향 임피던스에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, the scan characteristics of phased array antenna consisted of rectangular open-ended waveguide with a triangular grid are investigated. An infinite array structure is analyzed by numerically solving the integral equation for the electric field over the waveguide aperture using waveguide mode function and Floquet mode function. Next, SEP(Scan Element Pattern) and SI(Scan Impedance) characteristics are simulated by CST's MWS(Microwave Studio) and Ansoft's HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator) for the finite and infinite array structures. Also, validity of these approaches is verified by comparing the calculated and simulated results with the measured ones for an $8{\times}8$ subarray. Within 10.5 % fractional bandwidth in the X-band, the fabricated subarray showed the flat gain characteristic in the scan range of ${\pm}45^{\circ}C$ in the E-plane(azimuth) and ${\pm}20^{\circ}C$ in the H-plane(elevation), and also showed the return loss characteristic of less than -10 dB.

  • Notch Antenna is a travelling wave type antenna and can provide multioctave operation in phased arrays that scan over wide angle. In this paper, we designed a wideband E-plane phased array antenna using E-plane waveguide simulator which has a bandwidth of 3 : 1 and a scan volume of $\pm$45$^{\circ}$ in E-plane. We compared impedance of single antenna and infinite array antenna using equivalent circuit modeling. We analyzed full structure of 1$\times$9 phased array antenna and we evaluated active reflection coefficient with variation of beam scan angle through mutual coupling coefficient acquired from simulation and investigated the variation of antenna gain with variation of active element pattern as beam scan angle is varied.

The Analysis of a Coaxial-to-Waveguide Transition Using FDTD with Cylindrical to Rectangular Cell Interpolation Scheme

  • We analyze the characteristics of a coaxial-to-waveguide transition based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method with the cylindrical to rectangular cell interpolation scheme. The scheme presented in this paper is well suited for the analysis of a microwave device with a probe near waveguide discontinuity because perfect TEM mode can be generated inside the coaxial cable by using the cylindrical cell. The scattering parameters of a designed Ka-band transition are evaluated and compared with those of commercially available software, High Frequency Structure analysis Simulator (HFSS) and measured data. There exists good agreement between the measured and calculated data. In order to prove an accuracy of the interpolation scheme, a coaxial to waveguide transition with a disk-loaded probe is analyzed by the present approach and the results of this analysis are compared with measured data. Comparison shows that our results match very closely to those of measurement and other approaches. The method presented in this paper can be applied to analyze the characteristics of a probe excited cavity, coaxial waveguide T-Junctions, and so on.

  • The oscillation frequency tuning range of waveguide Gunn oscillator and its stability depend sensitively on the dimensions of the resonator. Therefore the embedding impedances with the various dimensions of the resonator for Q-band (33 ∼ 50 GHz) Gunn oscillator are calculated by using HFSS (High Frequency Structure Simulator). In this paper the comparisons between theoretical results of embedding impedances as a function of frequency and that of experimental results are described. And the oscillation frequency range could be predicted by using the theoretical evaluation methods which were proposed in this paper It shows that post size has an effect on the frequency tuning characteristics of Gunn oscillator.

Printed Reflectarray Antenna Design for Parabolic Reflector Volume Reduction (파라볼릭 반사기 체적 축소용 프린트 리플렉트어레이 안테나 설계)

  • In this study, we discuss about the printed reflectarray antenna design for parabolic reflector volume reduction. For this, we simulated and measured the phase characteristics of the unit array element of reflectarray antenna using waveguide simulator. As a results, the maximum phase variation is $298^{\circ}$ by simulation, the average phase variation is $309^{\circ}$ by measurement in 10GHz. And the printed Reflectarray antenna gain is 28.3dBi, 3dB beamwidth is E-plane $5.1^{\circ}$, H-plane $5.2^{\circ}$, sidelobe level is E-plane -11.4dB, H-plane -17.6dB.

  • In this paper, a novel CPW(Coplanar Waveguide)-fed UWB(Ultra Wide Band) antenna is designed, implemented, and measured for UWB communications. CPW-fed planar antenna has advantages of wide-bandwidth, low-cost and easy interaction with radio frequency front end circuitry. We have used HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator) of Ansoft which is based on the FEM(Finite Element Method) to simulate the proposed antenna. FR-4 substrate of thickness 1.6 mm and relative permitivity 4.4 is used for implementation. The proposed antenna showed VSWR(Voltage Standarding Wave Ratio)${\leq}2$ for the frequency band from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz which is used for ultra wide band communication. Measured peak gains are 2.61, 4.95, 2.89, 7.35 dBi at 3, 6, 8, 11 GHz, respectively.

  • Recently, SIW(Substrate Integrated Waveguide) is intensively studied because of its high Q and easy integration with other devices. However, lacks of analytic characterization of SIW makes it difficult an accurate design of a SIW filter along the conventional filter design method. In this paper, two kinds of a three-stage 10 GHz SIW bandpass filter of fractional bandwidth 10% are designed using 3D EM simulator HFSS based on the recently presented EM filter design method. Two types of a modified CPW to SIW transition is proposed and employed as a SIW to microstrip transition necessary for measurement. The transitions provide an easy measurement with commercial test fixture by TRL calibration. The two proposed transitions are included in the SIW filters. The fabricated filters shows the center frequency of 10 GHz, fractional bandwidth 10%, a return loss of about 12 dB, and insertion loss of about 0.8 dB.

A Study on the development of high power ceramic waveguide filter for UMTS (UMTS용 고출력 세라믹 도파관 필터 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The present study, which is about a ceramic waveguide filter for UMTS, designed a filer using a circuit and structure simulator, suggested a design method at a required frequency band, and developed a waveguide filter, which can be applied at a power of over 50W and be miniaturized, through implementing the design and examining related variables and characteristics. In the results of designing a waveguide filter with the center frequency of 1,950 MHz and 2,140 MHz and examining its characteristics, bandwidth was 60MHz, insertion loss was below 1.0dB, return loss was over 20dB, and attenuation at the relative frequency band was over 60dB. In the results of a power station test, the characteristics did not change and internal temperature was below $30^{\circ}C$ at 50.8W, and this confirmed that the filter is usable at over 50W.

Frequency Characteristic Estimation of Ceramic Stem based TO Package using a Coplanar Waveguide Feed-line for 10 Gbps Data Transmission (10 Gbps급 데이터 전송용 coplanar waveguide feed-line을 이용한 세라믹 스템 기반 TO 패키지의 주파수 특성 예측)

  • A ceramic stem based TO package incorporating a coplanar waveguide feed-line has been proposed allowing for 10 Gbps grade data transmission. The frequency response of a cylindrical feed-line fer a conventional metal based TO package was first analyzed, and compared with that of the CPW feed-line used for a ceramic based package such as a butterfly package. For the case where a DFB LD chip is packaged to an LD module, the measured 3 dB frequency bandwidths for the conventional and proposed packages were 3.5 GHz and 7.8 GHz respectively, which agree well with the theoretical results obtained from the modeling based on the small signal equivalent circuits. Consequently, we proposed a novel ceramic based TO package with a CPW feed-line in ceramic material as a stem to improve the frequency characteristics of the conventional one. And, its performance was theoretically observed to confirm that the proposed package provides even wider frequency bandwidth compared to the conventional one.
