A dynamic analysis of a horseshoe_shaped tunnel near to cavity was performed to study the effect of the cavity on the dynamic behavior of the tunnel. In order to obtain the dynamic response of the tunnel embedded in a semi-infinite domain, a hybrid numerical technique was primarily developed. A dynamic fundamental solution in frequency domain for multi-layered half planes was derived and subsequently incorporated in the boundary element method. Coupling of the boundary element method for the far field with the finite element method for the near field is made by imposing compatibility condition of a displacement at the interface. The boundary element method is then coupled with the finite element method, which is utilized to model the near field including the tunnel and the cavity. In order to demonstrate the validity of the proposed technique, dynamic responses of single and multiply-layered semi-infinite structural systems are obtained by using the Kicker waveform and investigated in the limestone layer to find how the being and the location of the cavity affect the dynamic characteristics of the system.
This paper proposes a three-phase three-switch buck-type converter as the MSC of a wind turbine system. Owing to a novel switching modulation scheme that can eliminate the unwanted diode rectifier mode switching state, the proposed system exhibits a satisfying ac voltage and current waveform quality and torque ripple up to the level of a typical current source rectifier even under a wide power factor operating range. The proposed system has been verified through simulations and HILS tests on a PMSG wind turbine model of 5MW/4160V. The proposed converter has been shown to provide a stator current THD of 3.9% and a torque ripple of 1% under the rated power condition. In addition to the inherent advantage of the reduced switch count of three-phase three-switch buck-type converters, the proposed switching modulation technique can make this converter a viable solution for the MSC placed inside of a nacelle, which is under severe volume, weight and mechanical vibration design limits.
This paper presents the application of a single phase AC-to-DC converter using a three-phase series parallel (SPRC) resonant converter to variable speed dc-drive. The improved power quality converter gives the input power factor unity over a wide speed range, reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD) of ac input supply current, and makes very low ripples in the armature current and voltage waveform. This soft-switching converter not only possesses the advantages of achieving high switching frequencies with practically zero switching losses but also provides full ranges of voltage conversion and load variation. The proposed drive system is the most appropriate solution to preserve the present separately excited de motors in industry compared with the use of variable frequency ac drive technology. The simulation and experimental results are presented for variable load torque conditions. The variable frequency control scheme is implemented using a DSP- TMS320LF2402. This control reduces the switching losses and current ripples, eliminates the EMI and improves the efficiency of the drive system. Experimental results confirm the consistency of the proposed approach.
Timing diagram is popularly utilized for the reason of its advantages; it is convenient for timing diagram to describe behavior of system and it is simple for described behaviors to recognize it. Various techniques are needed to test systems described in timing diagram. One of them is a technique to derive the system into a certain condition under which a test case is effective. This paper proposes a technique to automatically generate the test input sequence to reach the condition for systems described in timing diagram. It requires a proper input set which satisfy transition condition restricted by input waveform and timing constraints to generate a test input sequence automatically. To solve the problem, this paper chooses an approach utilizing the linear programming, and solving procedure is as follows: 1) Get a Timing diagram model as an input, and transforms the timing diagram model into a linear programming problem. 2) Solve the linear programming problem using a linear programming tool. 3) Generate test input sequences of a timing diagram model from the solution of linear programming problem. This paper addresses the formal method to drive the linear programming model from a given timing diagram, shows the feasibility of our approach by prove it, and demonstrates the usability of our paper by showing that our implemented tool solves an example of a timing diagram model.
Since seismic inversion is based on the wave equation, it is important to calculate the solution of wave equation exactly. In particular, full waveform inversion would produce reliable results only when the forward modeling is accurately performed because it uses full waveform. When we use finite-difference or finite-element method to solve the wave equation, the convergence of numerical scheme should be guaranteed. Although the general proof of convergence is provided theoretically, the consistency and stability of numerical schemes should be verified for practical applications. The implementation of source function is the most crucial factor for the consistency of modeling schemes. While we have to use the sinc function normalized by grid spacing to correctly describe the Dirac delta function in the finite-difference method, we can simply use the value of basis function, regardless of grid spacing, to implement the Dirac delta function in the finite-element method. If we use frequency-domain wave equation, we need to use a conservative criterion to determine both sampling interval and maximum frequency for the source wavelet generation. In addition, the source wavelet should be attenuated before applying it for modeling in order to make it obey damped wave equation in case of using complex angular frequency. With these conditions satisfied, we can develop reliable inversion algorithms.
The purpose of this study is to verify the utility of reflected photoplethysmography sensor using two green light emitting diodes that influenced by ambient light. Recently it has been studied that green light emitting diode is suitable for light source of reflected photoplethysmography sensor at low temperature and high temperature. Another study showed that, green light is better for monitoring heart rate during motion than led light. However, it has a bad characteristic about ambient light noise. To verify the utility of reflected photoplethysmography sensor using green light emitting diode, this study measures the photoplethysmography signal that is distorted by ambient light and will propose a solution. This study has two parts of research method. One is measurement system that composed sensor and board. The sensor is made up PE-foam and Non-woven fabric for flexible sensor. The photoplethysmography signal is measured by measurement board that composed high-pass filter, low-pass filter and amplifier. Ambient light source is light bulb and white light emitting diode that has three steps brightness. Photoplethysmography signal is measured with lead II electrocardiography signal at the same time and it is measured at the finger and radial artery for 1 minute, 1000 Hz sampling rate. The lead II electrocardiography signal is a standard signal for heart rate and photoplethysmography signal that measured at the finger is a standard signal for waveform. The test is repeated 3 times using three sensor. The data is processed by MATLAB to verify the utility by comparing the correlation coefficient score and heart rate. The photoplethysmography sensor using two green light emitting diodes is shown better utility than using one green light emitting diode and red light emitting diode at the ambient light. The waveform and heart rate that measured by two green light emitting diodes are more identical than others. The amount of electricity used is less than red light emitting diode and error peak detectability factor is the lowest.
Three earthquakes with local magnitude ($M_L$) greater than 3.0 occurred on April 24, June 2 and September 12 in 1999 nearby the Gyeongju area. Redetermined epicenters were located within the radius of 1 km. We carried out waveform inversion analysis to estimate focal mechanism of June 2 event, and P and S wave polarity and their amplitude ratio analysis to estimate focal mechanisms of April 24 and September 12 events. June 2 and September 12 events had similar fault plane solutions each other. The fault plane solution of April 24 event included those of other 2 events, but its distribution range was relatively broad. Focal mechanisms of those events had a strike slip faulting with a small normal component. P-axes of those events were ENE-WSW which were similar to previous studies on the P-axis of the Korean Peninsula. Considering distances between epicenters, similarities of seismic waves and sameness of polarities of seismic data recorded at common seismic stations, these events might occurred at the same fault. The seismic moment of June 2 event was estimated to be $3.9\;{\times}\;10^{14}\;N{\cdot}m$ and this value corresponded to the moment magnitude ($M_W$) 3.7. The moment magnitude estimated by spectral analysis was 3.8, which was similar to that estimated by waveform inversion analysis. The average stress drop was estimated to be 7.5 MPa. Moment magnitudes of April 24 and September 12 events were estimated to be 3.2 and 3.4 by comparing the spectrum of those events recorded at common single seismic station.
High-frequency electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation associated with borehole ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a complicated phenomenon. To improve the understanding of the governing physical processes, we employ a finite-difference time-domain solution of Maxwell's equations in cylindrical coordinates. This approach allows us to model the full EM wavefield associated with crosshole GPR surveys. Furthermore, the use of cylindrical coordinates is computationally efficient, correctly emulates the three-dimensional geometrical spreading characteristics of the wavefield, and is an effective way to discretise explicitly small-diameter boreholes. Numerical experiments show that the existence of a water-filled borehole can give rise to a strong waveguide effect which affects the transmitted waveform, and that excitation of this waveguide effect depends on the diameter of the borehole and the length of the antenna.
Recent studies have discovered that a conventional passive isolation system may suffer from an excessive isolator displacement when subjected to a near-fault earthquake that usually has a long-period velocity pulse waveform. Semi-active isolation using variable friction dampers (VFD), which requires a suitable control law, may provide a solution to this problem. To control the VFD in a semi-active isolation system more efficiently, this paper investigates experimentally the possible use of a control law whose control logic is similar to that of the anti-lock braking systems (ABS) widely used in the automobile industry. This ABS-type controller has the advantages of being simple and easily implemented, because it only requires the measurement of the isolation-layer velocity and does not require system modeling for gain design. Most importantly, it does not interfere with the isolation period, which usually decides the isolation efficiency. In order to verify its feasibility and effectiveness, the ABS-type controller was implemented on a variable-friction isolation system whose slip force is regulated by an embedded piezoelectric actuator, and a seismic simulation test was conducted for this isolation system. The experimental results demonstrate that, as compared to a passive isolation system with various levels of added damping, the semi-active isolation system using the ABS-type controller has the better overall performance when both the far-field and the near-fault earthquakes with different PGA levels are considered.
Rupture directivity is the important parameter in estimating damage due to earthquakes. However, the traditional moment tensor inversion technique cannot resolve the real fault plane or the rupture directivity. To overcome these limitations, we have developed a new inversion algorithm to determine the moment tensor solution and the rupture directivity for moderate earthquakes, using the waveform inversion technique in the frequency domain. Numerical experiments for unilateral and bilateral rupture models with various rupture velocities confirm that the method can resolve the ambiguity of the fault planes and the rupture directivity successfully. To verify the feasibility of the technique, we tested the sensitivity to velocity models, which must be the most critical factor in practice. The results of the sensitivity tests show that the method can be applied even though the velocity model is not perfect. If this method is applied in regions where the velocity model is well verified, we can estimate the rupture directivity of a moderate earthquake. This method makes a significant contribution to understanding the characteristics of earthquakes in those regions.
