The Safety Assessment to Breakwater Systems by Placing Submarine Rectangular Trench (해저 Trench 설치에 의한 방파제 시스템의 안전성 평가)

  • The present study is to estimate the effect of wave height affecting at the front face of breakwater systems, when a submarine trench is dredged in the distant offshore from outer breakwater. The wave diffraction field, which is important hydraulic factor in the ocean, is considered to be two dimensional(2D) plane and the configuration of the submarine trench on the sea bed designated by single horizontal long-rectangular system. The numerical simulation is performed by using Green function based on the boundary integral equation and meshed at moving boundary conditions. The results of present numerical simulations are illustrated by applying the normal incidence. It is shown that the ratios of wave height reduction at the front face of breakwater systems are approximately 20% by the effect of placing long trench on the sea bed. This study can effectively be utilized for safety assessment to various breakwater systems in the ocean field.

  • The aim of this work is to demonstrate a method for exciting and receiving torsional and longitudinal mode guided waves with an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) ring array. First of all, a three-dimensional guided wave simulator is developed in order to numerically analyze the propagation of the guided wave. The finite difference time domain method is used for the simulator. Second, two guided wave testing systems using an EMAT ring array are provided: one is for torsional mode (T-mode) guided wave and the other is for longitudinal mode (L-mode). The EMATs used in the both systems are the same in design. A method to generate and receive the T- and L-mode guided waves with the same EMAT is proposed. Finally, experimental and numerical results are compared and discussed. The results of experiments and simulation agree well, showing the potential of the EMAT ring array as a mode controllable guided wave transmitter and receiver.

A Study on the Statistical Distribution of Ultrasonic Velocities for the Condition Evaluation of Concrete Wide Beam (콘크리트 넓은 보의 상태평가를 위한 초음파 속도의 통계학적 분포에 대한 연구)

  • The ultrasonic pulse velocities of pressure, shear, and Rayleigh waves ( P-, S-, and R- waves) have been used for the condition evaluation of various concrete structures, but the statistical distribution according to the wave type has not been studied clearly in view of data reliability and validity. Therefore, this study analyzed the statistical distribution of P-, S-, R-wave velocities in concrete wide beams of $800{\times}3100mm$ (width ${\times}$ length) with a thickness of 300 mm. In addition, we investigated an experimental consistency by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit test. The experimental data showed that the R-, S- and P- wave velocities in order have better statistical stability and reliability for in situ evaluation because R- and S-waves are less sensitive to confinement and boundary conditions. Also, good correlations between wave velocities and strength and modulus of elasticity were found, which indicate them as appropriate techniques for estimating the mechanical properties.

  • The rogue wave was generated in a two-dimensional wave tank the rogue wave kinematics was investigated including local and convective accelerations of the water particle and verification of existing prediction methods. PIV technique was applied to measure the wave kinematics near the wave crest which extended to compute the local and convective accelerations. The experimental results were compared with several analytical predictions. The convective acceleration under the crest of rogue wave has a similar magnitude with the local acceleration.

Shock Waves in He II induced by a Gas Dynamic Shock Wave Impingement (기체역학적 충격파의 입사에 의해 유도된 초유동헬륨중의 충격파)

  • Two modes of shock waves propagating in He II (superfluid helium), this is a compression and a thermal shock waves, were studied experimentally by using superconductive temperature sensors, piezo pressure transducers and Schlieren visualization method with an ultra-high-speed video camera (40,500 pictures/sec). The shock waves are induced by a gas dynamic shock wave impingement upon a He II free surface. It is found that the shock Mach number of a transmitted compression shock wave is up to 1.16, and the shock Mach number of a thermal shock wave coincides well with the second sound velocity under each compressed He II state condition. The temperature rise ratio of an induced thermal shock wave to that of an incident gas dynamic shock wave was found to be very small, as small as 0.003 at 1.80K.

  • This paper attempts to provide a more complete acknowledging of Hallyu(Korean Wave), using systems thinking. The central concept is understanding how all the objects of Hallyu(Korean Wave) in a culture system interact with one another. What it attempts to do is understand the feedback loop of Hallyu(Korean Wave) with other country culture, and thus understand the behavior of mass culture agent it make produce. This works is for public management and policy in culture industry and leading culture itself. And alternative policies that alleviate the problem, and implements this solution at Hallyu(Korean Wave) continuance.

Sensitivity Analysis of Wind-Wave Growth Parameter during Typhoon Season in Summer for Developing an Integrated Global/Regional/Coastal Wave Prediction System (전지구·지역·국지연안 통합 파랑예측시스템 개발을 위한 여름철 태풍시기 풍파성장 파라미터 민감도 분석)

  • In this study, an integrated wave model from global to coastal scales was developed to improve the operational wave prediction performance of the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA). In this system, the wave model was upgraded to the WaveWatch III version 6.07 with the improved parameterization of the source term. Considering the increased resolution of the wind input field and the introduction of the high-performance KMA 5th Supercomputer, the spatial resolution of global and regional wave models has been doubled compared to the operational model. The physical processes and coefficients of the wave model were optimized for the current KMA global atmospheric forecasting system, the Korean Integrated Model (KIM), which is being operated since April 2020. Based on the sensitivity experiment results, the wind-wave growth parameter (βmax) for the global wave model was determined to be 1.33 with the lowest root mean square errors (RMSE). The value of βmax showed the lowest error when applied to regional/coastal wave models for the period of the typhoon season when strong winds occur. Applying the new system to the case of August 2020, the RMSE for the 48-hour significant wave height prediction was reduced by 13.4 to 17.7% compared to the existing KMA operating model. The new integrated wave prediction system plans to replace the KMA operating model after long-term verification.

Low Complexity Hybrid Precoding in Millimeter Wave Massive MIMO Systems

  • As a preprocessing operation of transmitter antennas, the hybrid precoding is restricted by the limited computing resources of the transmitter. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel hybrid precoding that guarantees the communication efficiency with low complexity and a fast computational speed. First, the analog and digital precoding matrix is derived from the maximum eigenvectors of the channel matrix in the sub-connected architecture to maximize the communication rate. Second, the extended power iteration (EPI) is utilized to obtain the maximum eigenvalues and their eigenvectors of the channel matrix, which reduces the computational complexity caused by the singular value decomposition (SVD). Third, the Aitken acceleration method is utilized to further improve the convergence rate of the EPI algorithm. Finally, the hybrid precoding based on the EPI method and the Aitken acceleration algorithm is evaluated in millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the computational complexity with the high performance in mmWave massive MIMO systems. The method has the wide application prospect in future wireless communication systems.

  • Next-generation ITS(Intelligent Transportation System) adopts WAVE(Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment) system which is capable of the bidirectional communication system in vehicular environments. u-Transportation system adopted WAVE communications system to show the optimal performance in terms of various services with regard to vehicle safety and traffic. In this paper, we introduce testbed of ubiquitous-Transportation system and its service. Then, we describe WAVE system for supporting next-generation ITS service. Also, we carried out tests in real road environments in order to verify communication functions of WAVE systems and its performance. We confirmed that our communication systems for supporting services meet the communication performance.

  • In order to convert wave energy into large quantities of high-efficiency power, it is necessary to study the optimal converter system appropriate for the environment of a specific open ocean area. A wave energy converter system with a counterweight converts the translation energy induced from the heave motion of a buoy into rotary energy. This experimental study evaluated the primary energy conversion efficiency of the system, which was installed on an ocean generating basin with a power take-off system. Moreover, this study analyzed the energy conversion performance according to the weight condition of the buoy, counter-weight, and flywheel by changing the load torque and wave period. Therefore, these results could be useful as basic data such as for the optimal design of a wave energy converter with a counterweight and improved energy conversion efficiency.
