The performance of a multi-level overtopping wave energy converter (OWEC) has been numerically and experimentally investigated in a two-dimensional wave tank in order to study the effects of opening width of additional reservoirs. The device is a fixed OWEC consisting of an inclined ramp together with several reservoirs at different levels. A particle-based numerical simulation utilizing the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is used to simulate the flow behavior around the OWEC. Additionally, an experimental model is also built and tested in a small wave flume in order to validate the numerical results. A comparison in energy captured performance between single-level and multi-level devices has been proposed using the hydraulic efficiency. The enhancement of power capture performance is accomplished by increasing an overtopping flow rate captured by the extra reservoirs. However, a noticeably large opening of the extra reservoirs can result in a reduction in the power efficiency. The overtopping flow behavior into the reservoirs is also presented and discussed. Moreover, the results of hydrodynamic performance are compared with a similar study, of which a similar tendency is achieved. Nevertheless, the LBM simulations consume less computational time in both pre-processing and calculating phases.

In the past, seawall and sea dike very higher than sea-water elevation had been constructed mainly to prevent the wave overtopping volume. However, the coastal zone is recently developed for the multipurpose of not only preventing from the coastal disaster but conserving the coastal environment and utilizing the coastal space. In this sense, this paper deals with the artificial reef being able to reduce the overtopping volume. Relations of the overtopping volume to the breaking wave are briefly reviewed theoretically, and fundamental factor affecting it are also obtained experimentally form the artificial reef with the irregular waves, In addition, the numerical simulation is developed to investigate the effects of spectral band width for the overtopping volume. The most effective artificial reef section to reduce the overtopping volume is proposed.

Wave overtopping reef system with guide vanes convert incident wave energy on the reef type structures into electric power. Previous studies decided shape parameters likes slope, height of the sloping arm and shape of guide vane. In this paper, using these shape parameters produce 1/7 scale model and construct integration scale model system combining water pressure head turbine, power generation, power control, operating control and monitoring system. In these systems, we measure the overtopping and power generation with different wave heights and periods and compare the results with the previous studies. This was confirmed designed overtopping and power generation, then we suggest efficient control system.
As commercial and residential areas are actively developed around the coastal area with excellent scenery, installing coastal structures such as seawalls and breakwaters is continuously increasing to secure safe coastal regions. Additionally, the increase in the intensity of natural disasters due to climate change may cause higher incident waves than in the past, which may further aggravate the damage caused by wave overtopping. In this study, compared to the existing vertical seawall, we investigated the effect of wave overtopping reduction of a recurved seawall, which actively reflects the incoming waves, through the hydraulic model test. As a result of the hydraulic model experiment, it was confirmed that there was an effect of up to 92.4% of wave overtopping reduction in average compared to the vertical seawall and structures covered with armor blocks.

In recent years, large-scale development of coastal areas has caused the loss of many lives and extensive property damage in coastal areas, due to wave overtopping caused by high-wave invasion and strong typhoons. However, coastal inundation studies considering the characteristics of domestic coastal areas are insufficient. This study is a methodology study that aimed to reproduce inundation of surge and wave complex elements by applying the ADCSWAN (ADCIRC+SWAN) and FLOW-3D models. In this study, the boundary data (sea level, wave) of the FLOW-3D model was extracted using the ADCSWAN (ADCIRC+SWAN) model and applied as the input value of the FLOW-3D model and a reproduction was created of the Flooding due to surge and overtopping in Busan Marine City when the typhoon Chaba passed. In addition, the existing overtopping empirical equation and the overtopping calculated by the FLOW-3D model were compared, and for coastal inundation, a qualitative verification was performed using the Inundation Trace Map of Land and Geospatial Informatrix Corporation, and the effectiveness of this study was reviewed.

Laboratory tests of wave overtopping rates for a rubble mound breakwaters armoured Tetrapod were carried out, with varying design waves, crest berm widths and crest freeboards. The objective of this study is to investigate overtopping performance and to examine the characteristics of the widely used overtopping prediction models through the results of laboratory tests. Laboratory tests show that structure slope and wave periods have a considerable influence on overtopping rates, but the difference of overtopping rates related to crest berm widths is slight. Owen(1980)'s prediction considerably overestimates compared to the measured valued. Prediction of Van der Meer et al.(1998) underestimates only for steep slope($cot{\alpha}$=1.5). Besley(1999)'s and Pedersen(1996)'s predictions have a relatively good agreement with the measured results for slopes with a broader crest berm width. In general, best agreement between measured and predicted overtopping rates is observed using modified Pedersen(1996)'s formula for all test conditions.

In general, coastal damage is mostly occurred by the action of complex factors, like severe water waves. If the maximum storm surge height combines with high tide, severe water waves will overflow coastal structures. Consequently, it can be the cause of lost lives and severe property damage. In this study, using the numerical model, the storm surge was simulated to examine its fluctuation characteristics at the coast in front of Noksan industrial complex, Korea. Moreover, the shallow water wave is estimated by applying wind field, design water level considering storm surge height for typhoon Maemi to SWAN model. Under the condition of shallow water wave, obtained by the SWAN model, the wave overtopping rate for the dike in front of Noksan industrial complex is calculated a hydraulic model test. Finally, based on the calculated wave-overtopping rate, the inundation regime for Noksan industrial complex was predicted. And, numerically predicted inundation regimes and depths are compared with results in a field survey, and the results agree fairly well. Therefore, the inundation modelthis study is a useful tool for predicting inundation regime, due to the coastal flood of severe water wave.

Overtopping discharge for sea dike having low mound and high wave wall (LMHW sea dike) is investigated with hydraulic experiments in this study. Vertical, Flare and Bullnose type wave walls are selected and Tetrapods (double layer) and Accropode (one layer) are adopted for armour layers of the front slope. The results of the hydraulic experiments are compared to the overtopping formulas for armoured rubble slopes and vertical sea dikes suggested by EurOtop Manual. Predicted overtopping discharges are underestimated as the roughness efficiency factors (γf) of armour blocks suggested by EurOtop are adopted when the overtopping formula for armoured rubble slopes sea dike is used. Meanwhile the predicted overtopping discharges agree well with the hydraulic experiments when the modified roughness efficiency factors redefined by multiplying efficiency factor of the heights of armoured crest berm and wave wall (γAR) are adopted. Return wall effects on a vertical wall (Kortenhaus et al., 2003; Pearson et al., 2004a) and the effects on a smooth dike slope (Van Doorslaer et al., 2015) in EurOtop Manual are investigated for Flare and Bullnose type wave walls. As a results of the comparison between experimental results and 2 formulas, return wall effect on a smooth dike was more valid for LMHW sea dike.

Hydraultic experiments were performed in 2-D were flume to investigate the stability o the breakwaters, the destruction of armor blocks and overtopping under irregular wave attack on the structures armored by \`Core-Loc\`. Overtopping rate and stability were examined and compared when armored by Core-Loc and by T.T.P. Results shows both type of blocks are stable and overtopping rates are similar in the adopted experimental condition. Therefore Core-Loc can replace some portion of T.T.P. which is uniquely used in Korea. Further integrated experimental data with Core-loc are need for destruction mechanism or overtopping rate.
Recently, a perforated caisson breakwater with turning wave blocks was developed to improve the water affinity and public safety of a rubble mound armored by TTP. In this study, hydraulic model tests were performed to examine the hydraulic performance of a non-porous caisson and new caisson breakwater with perforated blocks for attacking waves in a small fishery harbor near Busan. The model test results showed that the new caisson was more effective in dissipating the wave energy under normal wave conditions and in reducing the wave overtopping rates under design wave conditions than the non-porous caisson. It was found that the horizontal wave forces acting on the perforated caisson were slightly larger than those on the non-porous caisson because of the impulsive forces on the caisson with the turning wave blocks.
