  • The unsteady transitional boundary layer due to rotor-stator interaction was studied at two operation points, the design and one off design points. The off design point leads to lower blade loading and lower Reynolds number. A Navier-Stokes code developed in the previous study was parallelized to expedite computations. A low Reynolds number turbulence model was used to close the momentum equations. All computations show good agreement with experimental data. The wake induced transitional strip on the suction side of the stator is clearly captured at design point operation. There is no noticeable change in shape and phase angle of the wake induced strip even in the laminar sublayer. The wake induced transitional strip at off design point shows more complex structure. The wake induced transitional strip is observed only in the turbulent layer, and becomes obscure in the laminar sublayer and buffer layer. This behavior is probably consequent upon that the transition is governed by both wake induced strip and natural transition mechanism by Tollmien-Schlichting wave.

  • The stepped specimen which is subjected to step loading is modeled to study the initiation and growth of adiabatic shear band using explicit time integration finite element method. Three different clearance sizes are tested. The material model for the stepped specimen includes effects of strain hardening, strain rate hardening and thermal softening. It is found that the material inside the fully grown adiabatic shear band experiences three phase of deformation, (1) homogeneous deformation phase, (2) initiation/incubation phase, and (3) fast growth phase. The second phase of deformation is initiated after sudden shear stress drop which occurs at the same time regardless of the clearance size. The incubation time prior to fast growth phase increases, as the clearance size of the stepped specimen increases. Whereas, after incubation period, the growth rate of the adiabatic shear band decreases, as the clearance size decreases. It is also found that two adiabatic shear band may develop instead of one for the smaller clearance size.

  • Aerosol indirect radiative forcing of climate change is considered the most uncertain forcing of climate change over the industrial period, despite numerous studies demonstrating such modification of cloud properties and several studies quantifying resulting changes in shortwave radiative fluxes. Detection of this effect is made difficult by the large inherent variability in cloud liquid water path (LWP): the dominant controlling influence of LWP on optical depth and albedo masks any aerosol influences. Here we have used ground-based remote sensing of cloud optical depth (${\tau}_c$) by narrowband radiometry and LWP by microwave radiometry to determine the dependence of optical depth on LWP, thereby permitting examination of aerosol influence. The method is limited to complete overcast conditions with liquid-phase single layer clouds, as determined mainly by millimeter wave cloud radar. The results demonstrate substantial (factor of 2) day-to-day variation in cloud drop effective radius at the ARM Southern Great Plains site that is weakly associated with variation in aerosol loading as characterized by light-scattering coefficient at the surface. The substantial scatter suggests the importance of meteorological influences on cloud drop size as well, which should be analyzed in the further intensive studies. Meanwhile, it is notable that the decrease in cloud drop effective radius results in marked increase in cloud albedo.

  • Characteristics of a piezoelectric material are evaluated to pick up the optimal crystal cut and propagation direction for a SAW device. For the piezoelectric single crystal $LiTaO_4$, such items are investigated as the Rayleigh wave velocity, the electromechanical coupling factor, the surface permittivity, the frequency-temperature coefficient, the air loading attenuation, the pure mode propagation, the beam steering and the misalignment sensitivity. Theoretical calculations reveal that Y-cut and Z-propagation is the optimal SAW propagation path. The results are confirmed through experiments. The method empolyed in this paper is applicable to other crystals, too, either single or poly crystals.

  • Continuum formulations for the expressions of dynamic energy release rates and computational methods for dynamic stress intensity factors are developed for the analysis of dynamic fracture problems subjected to stress wave loading. Explicit volume integral expressions for instantaneous dynamic energy release rates are derived by modeling virtual crack extensions with the dynamic Eulerian-Lagrangian kinematic description. In the finite element applications a finite region around a crack-tip is modeled by using quarter-point singular isoparametric elements, and the volume integrals are evaluated for each crack-tip element during virtual crack extensions while the singularity is maintained. It is shown that the use of the present method is more reliable and accurate for the dynamic fracture analysis than that of other path-independent integral methods when the effects of stress waves are significant.

  • We studied the performance of CdSe nanoparticle in the active layer of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) by changing concentration of the CdSe NPs in the P3HT:PCBM layer. We observed that the absorption peak value gradually increases with the increasing amount of CdSe NPs at 600nm wave length. However, the electrical properties of OPVs correspond less with the tendency of UV/visible result. The highest performance was shown with 10% of CdSe NPs. The device performance decreased after 10% of CdSe NPs, this shows the dependencies of performanc of hybrid solar cells on the CdSe NPs loading amount. The resulting OPVs with 10 % of CdSe NPs show a short circuit current density ($J_{sc}$) of $6.96mA/cm^2$, open circuit voltage ($V_{oc}$) of 0.61V, fill factor (FF) of 0.59, and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.53% under AM 1.5 ($100mW/cm^2$).

  • Structural reliability of electrical panels installed in naval vessels is of critical importance from structural performance viewpoint. The electrical panels may be exposed to vibration and fatigue loadings from internal and external sources as well as wave loadings which result into a crack and fracture due to the decrease of fatigue strength. It is also well known that welded joints including brackets within steel structures .such as vessels and bridges are vulnerable against such repeated loadings. This study introduces a preliminary result of the optimized shape of frame bracket consisting of electrical panels in navel vessels against fatigue loading and their fatigue life at brackets of electrical panels by means of hot spot stress and structural stress methods.

  • It is the buckling of the compression portions of the deckplate that govern its behaviour under wet concrete construction loading. The size and position of intermediate stiffeners in the compression flanges of thin-plate steel decks exert a strong influence on the dominant buckling mode of the flange. Test sections composed of high-strength steel were brake pressed with a variety of Flat-hat intermediate stiffeners in the compression flange forming a progression from small to large stiffeners. The ABAQUS program to determine the effectiveness of intermediate stiffeners in controlling buckling modes is undertaken. A series of specimens are loaded with simple beam. Various buckling wave forms prior to ultimate failure through a plastic collapse mechanism. The experimentally determined buckling stresses are found to be comparable with studies performed using the ABAQUS program analysis and using each country code.

  • Many experimental data of fatigue crack propagation show that the fatigue crack propagation process is stochastic. Therefore, the study on the crack propagation must be based on the probabilistic approach. In the present paper, fatigue crack propagation process is assumed to be a discrete Markov process and the method is developed, which can evaluate the reliability of the structural component by using Markov chain model(Unit step B-model) suggested by Bogdanoff. In this method, leak failure, plastic collapse and brittle fracture of the critical component are taken as failure modes, and the effects of initial crack distribution, periodic and non-periodic inspection on the probability of failure are considered. In this method, an equivalent load value for random loading such as wave load is used to facilitate the analysis. Finally some calculations are carried out in order to show the usefulness and the applicability of this method. And then some remarks on this method are mentioned.

  • A deeper understanding of the effectiveness of adopting devices mounting shape memory alloy (SMA) elements in applications targeted to the mitigation of vibrations is pursued via an experimental approach. During a seismic event, less than 1000 loading-unloading cycles of the alloy are required to mitigate the earthquake effects. However, the aging effects during the time of inactivity prior to the oscillations (several decades characterized by the yearly summer-winter temperature wave) should be considered in order to avoid and/or minimize them. In this paper, the results obtained by carrying out, in different laboratories, fatigue tests on SMA specimens are compared and discussed. Furthermore, the effects of seismic events on a steel structure, with and without SMA dampers, are numerically simulated using ANSYS. Under an earthquake excitation, the SMA devices halve the oscillation amplitudes and show re-centering properties. To confirm this result, an experimental campaign is conducted by actually installing the proposed devices on a physical model of the structure and by evaluating their performance under different excitations induced by an actuator.
