  • Simple regression models for pollutants load estimation of paddy developed by the Ministry of Environment in 1995 were tested with the data (T-N, T-P, $COD_{Mn}$, and SS) collected from Yeongsan and Seomjin river watersheds, and improvement measures were suggested. Overall, the simulated values showed a great difference from the measured values except for T-P according to the statistical analyses (RMSE, root mean square error; RMAE, root mean absolute error; RB, relative bias; EI, efficiency index). Such difference was assumed due to the fact that the models use only hydrologic factors (quantity factor) associated with precipitation and run-off as input parameters, but do not consider other factors which are likely to affect pollutant concentration (quality factor) including days after fertilization. In addition, in terms of accessibility of the models, some parameters in the models such as run-off depth and run-off amount which can not be obtained from the weather database but should be collected by on-site measurements need to be replaced with other variables.

  • A novel approach of Poisson cluster stochastic rainfall generator was validated in its ability to reproduce important rainfall and watershed response characteristics at 104 locations of the United States. The suggested novel approach - The Hybrid Model(THM), as compared to the traditional ones, has an additional function to account for the year-to-year variability of rainfall statistics. The two-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to see how well THM and traditional approach of Poisson cluster rainfall model reproduce the distribution of the following hydrologic variables: monthly maximum rainfall depths with 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 hour duration, monthly maximum flow peaks at the virtual watersheds with Curve Number of 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90; and monthly runoff depths at the same virtual watersheds. In all of the testing variables, THM significantly outperformed the traditional approach. This result indicates that the year-to-year variability of rainfall statistics contains important information about the characteristics of rainfall processes that were not considered by the conventional approach of Poisson cluster rainfall modeling and that further considering it in rainfall simulation will enhance the performance of the rainfall models.

  • Land use pattern in the Wangsuk river watershed was investigated on the bases of physiognomic vegetation maps made from the aerial photograph interpretation and field check. Landscape structure was analyzed using a GIS program supported by ArcView. Landscape structure depended on the geographical position of the river, such as the upper, middle and lower river. Watersheds of the upper and middle rivers were dominated by forests composed of secondary forest and plantation. But agricultural fields dominated that of the middle and lower river. Urban area and agricultural fields increased in from the upper toward the lower river watersheds. In addition to, a transformation of agricultural pattern into an institutional agriculture was characteristic in the middle and lower river basins. Water qualities of the Wangsuk river were usually better in the order of the upper, middle, and lower river, but they were fluctuated according to the site. Such fluctuation would due to self-purification of the river and land use pattern of the watershed as the non-point source. In this viewpoint, a strategy to manage the water quality in the level of watershed is urgently required.

  • This study is to assess the runoff characteristics of nonpoint source pollution loads for Jecheon and Jangpyeong stream watersheds located in the upstream of Chungju lake. The SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool), a physically based distributed hydrological model was calibrated and verified using 5 years (2006 to 2010) streamflow and water quality data. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency for streamflow was 0.60~0.92 and the determination coefficients for sediment, Total Nitrogen (T-N), and Total Phosphorous (T-P) were 0.53~0.71, 0.51~0.91 and 0.38~0.85 respectively. The results showed that the Sediment, T-N, and T-P of Jangpyeong stream were 40.0~60.9 %, 34.8~64.1 % and 76.5~83.9 % higher than Jecheon stream watershed during wet days. The results evaluated high NPS loads at Jangpyeong stream because the percentage of urban and upland crop cultivation area Jangpyeong stream watershed was higher than Jecheon stream watershed.

  • This study attempted to improve the accuracy of streamflow and baseflow prediction of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) by applying baselfow recession constants for each sub-watershed. This study set two different scenarios (S1 and S2) to evaluate the impact of application of baseflow recession constants for each sub-watershed on streamflow prediction. In S1, Only the baseflow recession constant obtained from the streamflow station located in the final outlet of study area was applied for whole sub-watersheds. In S2, baseflow recession constants obtained from six different streamflow stations were applied for each sub-watershed. Then, baseflow was separated form the measured streamflow data and the predicted streamflow of S1 and S2 using Web-based Hydrograph Analysis Tool (WHAT). The results showed Nash-Sutcliff efficiency (NSE) and $R^2$ of S2 were a little higher than these of S1 in both streamflow and baseflow prediction results. However, it is important that S2 reflected physical meaning of baseflow recess. Also, recession part of hydrograph in S2 was calibrated better than that of S1 compared to the measured hydrograph.

  • Integrated management system (IMS) for sewerage facilities has been installed at 7 dams and 9 watersheds since 2006. However, there has been no decisive plan on how and who to manage efficiently IMS after finishing the construction. Therefore, in this study, it was suggested that a new organization, so to speak, a technical support team for integrated management that may operate and manage IMS efficiently, could need to be set up. Three scenarios were evaluated depending on the type of allocating human resources to new organization considering each levels of sewerage facilities. Economic analyses on each scenarios of human resources allocation were also carried out. As a result, establishing the technical support team for integrated management was estimated to give the net benefit from 1.3 billion to 20.6 billion won for 15 years.

  • TMDL development and implementation have great potential fur use in efforts to improve water quality management, but the TMDL approach still has several difficulties to overcome in terms of cost, time requirements, and suitable methodologies. A well-defined prioritization approach for identifying watersheds of concern among several tar-get locations that would benefit from TMDL development and implementation, based on a simple screening approach, could be a major step in solving some of these difficulties. Therefore, a web-based decision support system (DSS) was developed to help identify areas within watersheds that might be priority areas for TMDL development. The DSS includes a graphical user interface based on the HTML protocol, hydrological models, databases, and geographic information system (GIS) capabilities. The DSS has a hydrological model that can estimate non-point source pollution loading based on over 30 years of daily direct runoff using the curve number method and pollutant event mean concentration data. The DSS provides comprehensive output analysis tools using charts and tables, and also provides probability analysis and best management practice cost estimation. In conclusion, the DSS is a simple, affordable tool for the preliminary study of TMDL development via the Internet, and the DSS web site can also be used as an information web server for education related to TMDL.

  • This Study is to develop the suitable hydrologic models for determination of the size and location of detention storage facilities to restrain stormwater runoff in urban areas. Hypothetical areas of two levels are considered to seize the hydrologic response characteristics. A one-square-kilometer ares is selected for the catchment level, and a 10-square-kilometer area consisting of 10 catchments is adapted at the watershed level as representative of urban drainage area. In this analysis, different rainfall freqyencies, land uses, drainage patte군, basin shates and detention storage policies are considered. Folw reduction effect of detention storage facilities is deduced from storage ratio and detention basin factor. A substantial saving in detention storage volumes is achieved 노두 the detention storage is planned at the watershed level rather than the catchment level. For the application of real watersheds, two watersheds in Seoul metropolitan area-Jamshil 2 and Seongnae 1-are selected on the basis of hydrologic response charactaristics. Through the regression analysis between dimensionless deterntion storage volume, dimensionless upstream area ratio and reduction rate of storage ratio, the regression equations to determine the size and location of detention storage faclities are presented.

  • In Korea, groundwater quality is monitored through National Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network (NGQMN) administered by Ministry of Environment. For a given contaminant, compliance to groundwater quality standards is assessed on a annual basis by monitoring the number of incidents that concentration exceeds the regulatory limit. However, this approach provides only a fractional information about groundwater quality degradation, and more crucial information such as location and severity of the contamination cannot be obtained. For better groundwater quality management on a watershed, a more spatially informative and intuitive method is required. This study presents two statistical methods to convert point-wise monitoring data into information on groundwater quality status of a watershed by using a proposed grading scale. The proposed grading system is based on readily available reference standards that classify the water quality into 4 grades. The methods were evaluated with NO3-, Cl-, and total coliform data in Geum River basin. The analyses revealed that groundwater in most watersheds of Geum River basin is good for domestic or/and drinking with no treatment. But, there was notable quality degradation in Bunam seawall and So-oak downstream standard watersheds contaminated by NO3- and Cl-, respectively.

  • Climate Change affects the hydrological cycle in agricultural watersheds through rising air temperature and changing rainfall patterns. Agricultural watersheds in Korea are characterized by extensive paddy fields and intensive water use, a resource that is under stress from the changing climate. This study analyzed the effects of climate change on river flows for Geum Cheon and Eun-San Choen watershed using STREAM, a semi-distributed watershed model. In order to evaluate the performance and improve the reliability of the model, calibration and validation of the model was done for one flow observation point and three reservoir water storage ratio points. Climate change scenarios were based on RCP data provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and bias corrections were done using the Quantile Mapping method to minimize the uncertainties in the results produced by the climate model to the local scale. Because of water mass-balance, evapotranspiration tended to increase steadily with an increase in air temperature, while the increase in RCP 8.5 scenario resulted in higher RCP 4.5 scenario. The increase in evapotranspiration led to a decrease in the river flow, particularly the decrease in the surface runoff. In the paddy agricultural watershed, irrigation water demand is expected to increase despite an increase in rainfall owing to the high evapotranspiration rates occasioned by climate change.
