Landslides pose significant threats to many countries globally, yet the development and implementation of effective landslide early warning systems (LEWS) remain challenging due to multifaceted complexities spanning scientific, technological, and political domains. Addressing these challenges demands a holistic approach. Technologically, integrating thresholds, such as rainfall thresholds, with real-time data within accessible, open-source software stands as a promising solution for LEWS. This article introduces LandScient_EWS, a PHP-based program tailored to address this need. The software facilitates the comparison of real-time measured data, such as rainfall, with predefined landslide thresholds, enabling precise calculations and graphical representation of real-time landslide advisory levels across diverse spatial scales, including regional, basin, and hillslope levels. To illustrate its efficacy, the program was applied to a case study in Medellin, Colombia, where a rainfall event on August 26, 2008, triggered a shallow landslide. Through pre-defined rainfall intensity and duration thresholds, the software simulated advisory levels during the recorded rainfall event, utilizing data from a rain gauge positioned within a small watershed and a single grid cell (representing a hillslope) within that watershed. By identifying critical conditions that may lead to landslides in real-time scenarios, LandScient_EWS offers a new paradigm for assessing and responding to landslide hazards, thereby improving the efficiency and effectiveness of LEWS. The findings underscore the software's potential to streamline the integration of rainfall thresholds into both existing and future landslide early warning systems.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the complementary relationship-based evapotranspiration models, namely, advection-aridity (AA) model of Brutsaert and Stricker and the CRAE model of Morton for estimating actual evapotranspiration. Both models were applied to the Bokhacheon middle-upper watershed, and their estimates were evaluated against the water balance estimate. The calculation was made on a daily basis and comparison was made on monthly and annual bases. For comparison, the water balance estimates were not obtained from the observed precipitation and streamflow data but were based on the simulated data by using integrated watershed model, SWAT-K which is the revised version of SWAT. The reason not to directly use the observed data for water balance estimate is that the credible record period is not sufficient and the streamflow has been altered due to water use and release. Overall, the results showed that both AA model and CRAE model with their original parameters overestimate annual and monthly evapotranspiration, and the large difference between the complementary relationship-based approach and the water balance approach occurs especially for the dry season from Nov. to Mar. It was found out that the parameters, particularly for the advection related parameter, must be recalibrated to accurately produce monthly and annual regional evapotranspiration for this study area.
An approach determining a confidence interval of Nash's observed mean instantaneous unit hydrograph is developed. In the approach, both two parameters are treated as correlated gaussian random variables based on the theory of Box-Cox transformation and the regional similarity relation, so that linear statistical parameter estimation is possible. A parametric bootstrap method is adopted to give the confidence interval of the mean observed hydrograph. The proposed methodology is also applicable to estimate the parameters of Nash's model for un-gauged basins. An application to a watershed has shown that the proposed approach is adequate to assess the uncertainty of the Nash's hydrograph and to evaluate parameters for un-gauged basins.
An extension of TOPMODEL was developed for rainfall-runoff simulation in agricultural watersheds equipped with tile drains. Tile drain functions are incorporated into the framework of TOPMODEL. Nine possible flow generation scenarios are suggested for tile drained watershed and applied in the modeling procedure. In the model development process, the traditional physically based storage approach and a new approach using a transfer function for the simulation of the flow in the unsaturated zone were compared. In order to provide better insight into the simulation process, a regionalized sensitivity analysis was performed to test the performance of the model and to compare the behavior of the transfer function to that of the simple storage related formulation. The results of analysis show good performance of the transfer function approach. Since the rainfall-runoff response pattern tends to vary seasonally, seven events distributed throughout a year were used in the sensitivity analysis to investigate the seasonal variation of the hydrologic characteristics. It is found that the sensitivity of each parameter described by the model are varied seasonally.
In this study, we applied approach of integrative star-plot area (SPA), chemical water quality and habitat conditions (QHEI) to diagnoze ecological conditions at the eight sampling sites of Sapkyo Stream. These outcomes were compared with biological health based on the Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) using fish assemblage. And then, we evaluated the integrative ecological health condition using the star-plot method. This approach based on the sum of all the star-plot areas over these water and habitat characteristics. It was developed to reflect an integrative assessment of the ecological health in the stream. The biological health, based on the model values of IBI indicating "fair-poor" condition according to the criteria. Physical habitat health, based on the QHEI, averaged 123 indicating a "good-fair" condition. Also, chemical health, based on simply BOD values indicating "poor grade" according to the criteria of the Ministry of Environment Korea (MEK). The SPA indicating that 50% of the all was impaired condition and the most sampling sites were downstream sites influenced by the point and non-point sources. Overall our results suggest that the ecological health impact was a combined effect of eutrophication and habitat degradations in the stream. The approach of SPA can be used as a tool to evaluate the integrative health of stream environment and to identify possible causes of observed effects.

Recently, GIS has been increasing its applicability in water resource field. The GIS based modeling process can generally be used for extracting channel network and watershed delineation. Through the overlay analysis, the extracted channel network can be overlayed with topographic and landuse maps to generate the input files for running a hydrologic model. This lead to consider GIS as a tool which can include subjective factors of the model designers in hydrologic analysis. Therefore, this study has compared GIS based HEC-GEOHMS with the classical approach. In general, both approaches have similar results, however, HEC-GROHMS has showed some errors. Based on the results, a GIS based approach could be more effective method with better credibility to obtain input parameters from topographic information as subsequent efforts were made to lessen the errors.
The daily soil water contents were obtained from the time domain reflectometry (TDR) method and energy balance-water budget approach with eddy correlation at the two small semiarid watersheds of Lucky Hills and Kendall during the summer rainy period. There was a comparison of daily soil water content measured and estimated from these two different approaches. The comparison is valuable to evaluate the accuracy of current soil water content measuring system using TDR and energy balance-water budget approach using eddy correlation method at small watersheed scale. The degree of similarity between the regressions of these two methods of measuring soil water content was explained by determining the correlations between these methods. Simple linear regression analyses showed that soil water content measured from TDR method was responsible for 58% and 63% of the variations estimated from energy balance-water budget approach with eddy correlation at Lucky Hills and Kendall, respectively. The scatter plots and the regression analyses revealed that two different approaches for soil water content measurement at small watershed scale have no significant difference.
This study aimed at the introduction of desktop method for assessment of environmental flows developed by International Water Management Institute (IWMI) recently and its application to Geum river basin. This scheme simulated the influence on aquatic ecosystem caused by watershed development and in turn the decrease of water quantity keeping the river's own flow regime. It was found to be as very effective method although it had simple structure. Flow duration curves for different environmental classes at Sutong and Gongjoo sites were estimated according to the natural conditional scenario of Geum river basin and the results were relatively compared well with the previous studies. The behaviors of monthly average runoff time series of both sites showed the level of A class. The results of this study would provide the fundamental data to establish the future plans of monitoring or management for aquatic ecosystem of Geum river basin.
This paper aims to assessing impact of reduction of non-point source pollution in the Bokha Stream watershed. The BASINS/HSPF model was calibrated and verified for water flow and water qualities using Total Maximum Daily Load 8days data from 2006 to 2007. Accuracy of the BASINS/HSPF models in simulating hydrology and water quality was compared and there were somewhat differences of statistical results, but water flow and water quality were simulated in good conditions over the study period. The applicability of models was tested to evaluate non-point source control scenarios to response hydrology and water quality in the Bokha stream using various measures which include BMPs approach and change of landuse. The evaluation of reduction of non-point source pollution was developed using load-duration curve. Despite strong reduction of non-point source, there are not satiated target quality at low flow season.
Non-point source pollution management is one of the most important issues in Korean water quality/watershed management. In recent years, Low Impact Development (LID) has emerged as an effective approach to control stormwater in an urban area. This study illustrates how to design and evaluate the effect of non-point pollutant management using EPA-SWMM LID module and suggests design parameters for modeling LID facilities. In addition, optimal installation locations of LID can be determined by a simple distributed hydrologic model by using SWMM for a long-term.
