Water-jet trajectory visualization and velocity deficits from a high pressurized steam-generator nozzles were experimentally observed. In order to find an optimal nozzle configuration. several parameters affecting plugging and erosion onto the steam generator tube were quantitatively analyzed. For the experiments, a high-pressurized pump (pressure in use: 200 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 15 HP, 11 kW, output flow Q : 301/min) was utilized. Visualization, velocity distribution, and spray growth rate with different nozzle configurations have been mainly focused using a 2-D PDPA system. The results indicated that trajectories along the centerline regardless of their configurations has its potential core region. However, the phenomena from the peripheral part need to be meticulously considered. Accordingly, it is evident that quantitative velocity deficits at the outer region are outstanding due to the aerodynamical drag and entrainment.
Tribological properties of fiber composite materials were measured and wear resistant hybrid structure was proposed based upon the understanding of tribological behavior of the composite materials. Unidirectional composites with glass fibers, carbon fibers, and aramid fibers were tested for tribological properties in order to propose a wear resistant hybrid structure. Hybrid composites which contain carbon and aramid fibers were prepared, the specimens were sliced by a water-jet cutter, and friction and wear properties were measured. An experimental set-up was designed and built for the friction and wear test of the composite specimens. Unidirectional fiber composite and hybrid composite specimens were tested to evaluated the tribological behavior for biomimetic applications. It is observed that the friction and wear behavior of fiber composites depends upon fiber orientation, sliding speed, and type of reinforcing fibers.

The objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the mixed flow behaviors and oxygen transfer characteristics of a vertical orifice ejector. The experimental apparatus consisted of an electric motor-pump, an orifice ejector, a circulation water tank, an air compressor, a high speed camera unit and control or measurement accessories. The mass ratio was calculated using the measured primary flow rate and suction air flow rate with experimental parameters. The visualization images of vertically injected mixed jet issuing from the orifice ejector were qualitatively analyzed. The volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient was calculated using the measured dissolved oxygen concentration. At a constant primary flow rate, the mass ratio and oxygen transfer coefficient increase with the air pressure of compressor. At a constant air pressure of the compressor, the mass ratio decreases and the oxygen transfer coefficient increases as the primary flow rate increases. The residence time and dispersion of fine air bubbles and the penetration of mixed flow were found to be important parameters for the oxygen transfer rate owing to the contact area and time of two phases.

Recently, concerns about the environment are becoming more important because of global warming and the exhaustion of earth's resources. In the aviation and automobile industries, the application of light materials is increasingly important for eco-friendly and effective. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics is a composite material which great formability and the high strength of carbon fiber. CFRP, which is both light and strong, is hard to manufacture. In addition, CFRP machining has a high chance of defects. This research discusses the development of a manufacturing system package for CFRP machining. It involving CFRP Drilling/Water-jet Manufacturing Machines, Inspection/Post-processing Systems, CNC platform for an EtherCAT servo Communication, Flexible Manufacturing Systems and CFRP machining Processes.
Regenerated composite fibers were prepared from solution of styela clava tunics(SC) and poly vinyl alchol(PVA) using N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide(NMMO)/water(87/13)(wt%/wt%) as a solvent by dry jet-wet spinning. Structure and physical properties of regenerated composite fibers were investigated through birefrngence, x-ray diffratograms, tenacity, fibrillation and SEM. Optimal blend ratio of SC/PVA for mechanical properties of composite fibers was 70/30 and total weight was 4wt% concentrations in NMMO/$H_2O$ solvent system. Crystallinity index of composite fibers were decreased as the PVA contents increased. Fibrillation of $10{\sim}20wt%$ PVA blended fibers were occurred less than pure SC fiber. Shape of composite fibers were a circle cross section within 10wt% PVA content. But the cross section of fibers were changed as crushed flat with the PVA contents increased.

In the manufacturing process of steel plates, materials at high temperatures above $800^{\circ}C$ are rapidly cooled by using a circular impinging water jet to determine their strength and toughness. In this study, the basic heat and fluid flow is solved by using the existing numerical model for boiling heat transfer. Actually, steel undergoes a phase change from austenite to ferrite or bainite during the cooling process. The phase change induces changes in its thermal properties. Instead of directly solving the phase change and the material cooling together, we solve the heat transfer only by applying the thermal properties that vary with temperature, which is already known from other studies. The effects of the changes in the thermal properties on the cooling of steel and the necessity of calculating the phase change are discussed.

Wave absorbing system is needed at various kinds of wave basins (wave flume, towing tank, square tank) for the model test related to the ocean engineering. In this paper, the performance of wave absorbing system with new concept is estimated throughout the experiments. Herein, the wave absorbing system is designed by punching plate with a given porosity which is installed horizontally and submerged near the water surface. As the incident wave generated by a wave maker advances above a punching plate, the strong jet flow is formed near a hole of punching plate. As a result, wave energy is dissipated into heat energy, Systematic model tests were conducted at KRISO to verify the performance of the wave absorber using a punching plate. It was found that the reflection coefficient of wave absorber is deeply dependent on both the porosity and the submerged depth of a punching plate. Inclined installation of a punching plate shows better performance than a horizontal one within a certain inclined angle.
The cryopreservation of sperm has become the subject of research for successful artificial insemination technologies. Antifreeze proteins (AFPs), one of the factors necessary for effective cryopreservation, are derived from certain Antarctic organisms. These proteins decrease the freezing point of water within these organisms to below the temperature of the surrounding seawater to protect the organism from cold shock. Accordingly, a recent study found that AFPs can increase the motility and viability of spermatozoa during cryopreservation. To evaluate this relationship, we performed cryopreservation of boar sperm with AFPs produced in the Arctic yeast Leucosporidium sp. AFP expression system at four concentrations (0, 0.01, 0.1, and $1{\mu}g/ml$) and evaluated motility using computer assisted sperm analysis. DNA damage to boar spermatozoa was measured by the comet assay, and sperm membrane integrity and acrosome integrity were evaluated by flow cytometry. The results showed that motility was positively affected by the addition of AFP at each concentration except $1{\mu}g/ml$ (p<0.001). Although cryopreservation with AFP decreased the viability of the boar sperm using, the tail DNA analyses showed that there was no significant difference between the control and the addition of 0.1 or $0.01{\mu}g/ml$ AFP. In addition, the percentage of live sperm with intact acrosomes showed the least significant difference between the control and $0.1{\mu}g/ml$ AFP (p<0.05), but increased with $1{\mu}g/ml$ AFP (p<0.001). Our results indicate that the addition of AFP during boar sperm cryopreservation can improve viability and acrosome integrity after thawing.
The effect of Chitosan (CS), Carbon Nanotube (CNT) and hybrid (CS-CNT) fillers on the natural frequency of drilled composite plate is investigated by experimentally in this study. The numerical validation is also made with a program based on Finite Element Method (SolidWorks). Nine types filled and one neat composite plates are used in the study. The fillers ratios are 1% CS, 2% CS, 3% CS, 0.1% CNT, 0.2% CNT, 0.3% CNT, 1% CS+0.3% CNT, 2% CS+0.3% CNT, 3% CS+0.3% CNT. The specimens cut to certain sizes by water jet from the plates 400 mm × 400 mm in dimensions. Some of them are drilled in certain dimensions with drill. The natural frequency of each specimen is measured by the vibration test set up to determine the vibration characteristic. The vibration test set up includes an accelerometer, a current source power unit, a data acquisition card and a computer. A code is written in Matlab® program for the signal processing. The study are investigated and discussed in four main points to understand the effect of the fillers on the natural frequency of the composite plate. These are the effect of fillers contents and amounts, orientation angles of fibers, holes numbers and holes sizes. As results, the natural frequency of the plate with 1% CS and 0.1% CNT hybrid filler is lower than those of the plates with other fillers ratios for 45° orientation angle. Besides, in the composite plate with 0° orientation angle, the natural frequency increases with increasing the filler ratio. Moreover, the natural frequency increases until a certain hole number and then it decreases. Furthermore, the natural frequency is not affected until a certain hole diameter but then it decreases.
Surimi products are among the most prominent seafoods in Korea. Together with fish meat, wheat flour is a major ingredient in the preparation of surimi products. Rice flour, however, can be an effective ingredient in enhancing the rheological characteristics of surimi products. In this study, we evaluated the potential of rice flour as an agent to replace wheat flour in surimi products. The effects of rice flour milling types and addition methods on the rheological and sensory properties of surimi products were investigated. Among different addition methods, the surimi product containing non-treated rice flour showed better gel strength and sensory properties than products containing paste (1:1.3 rice flour/water, w/v) and steamed paste (steamed at $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min). According to the gel strength results for surimi products with added roll-mill (40 mesh) and jet-mill (180 mesh) rice flours, the roll-mill rice flour shows good potential as a replacement for wheat flour. When considering gel strength and sensory properties, an effective amount of rice flour to add was 10-15% (w/w). In conclusion, the rheological and sensory properties of surimi products containing rice flour were comparable with those of a premium commercial surimi product. Therefore, rice flour might be an effective alternative to wheat flour for premium surimi products.
