This paper presents a comparative analysis of thermodynamic performance of ammonia-water Rankine cycles with and without regeneration and Kalina cycle for recovery of low-temperature heat source. Special attention is paid to the effect of system parameters such as ammonia mass fraction and turbine inlet pressure on the characteristics of the system. Results show that maximum net power can be obtained in the regenerative Rankine cycle for high turbine inlet pressures. However, Kalina cycle shows better net power and thermal efficiency for low turbine inlet pressures, and the optimum ammonia mass fractions of Kalina cycle are lower than Rankine cycles.
An exergy analysis is carried out for the regenerative wet-compression Brayton cycle which has a potential of enhanced thermal efficiency owing to the reduced compression power consumption and the recuperation of exhaust energy. Using the analysis model, the effects of pressure ratio and water injection ratio are investigated on the exergy efficiency of system, exergy destruction ratio for each component of the system, and exergy loss ratio due to exhaust gas. The results of computation for the typical cases show that the regenerative wet-compression gas turbine cycle can make a notable enhancement of exergy efficiency. The injection of water results in a decrease of exergy loss of exhaust gas and an increase of net power output.

The industrial revolution in England was based on the manufacturing systems by the power of water mill and rapidly progressed by the innovation of steam engine. It is no exaggeration to say that today's civilization is realized by the development of various types of power machinery, namely fluid machinery and heat engine. The electric energy is converted mainly from thermal energy (mainly steam) of mineral oil, coal and nuclear fuel through generator connected with steam turbine which is a kind of power machinery. There are various types of power machinery as shown in Tables 1a and 1b. They are classified into two types by use. One is absorption type of fluid and/or thermal energy, for examples, windmill and heat engine. The other is provision type of the energies for examples, pump, compressor and propulsion. By flow type, they are also classified by two types, turbo type and positive-displacement type. The turbo type began from water mill and windmill and evolve to steam turbine and finally to gas turbine. The positive-displacement type started from reciprocating water pump and developed into steam engine and changed to reciprocating combustion engine. The pumps and motors used in oil hydraulic system for power control are also positive-displacement type.

This paper presents a numerical simulation study of the transient behavior of a $2{\times}340MW$ pump-turbine power plant, where the results show an unstable behavior at runaway. First, the modeling of hydraulic components based on equivalent schemes is presented. Then, the 2 pump-turbine test case is presented. The transient behavior of the power plant is simulated for a case of emergency shutdown with servomotor failure on Unit 1. Unstable operation at runaway with a period of 15 seconds is properly simulated using a 1-dimensional approach. The simulation results points out a switch after 200 seconds of the unstable behavior between a period of oscillations initially of 15 seconds to a period of oscillation of 2.16 seconds corresponding to the hydraulic circuit first natural period. The pressure fluctuations related to both the rigid and elastic water column mode are presented for oscillation mode characterization. This phenomenon is described as a switch between a rigid and an elastic water column oscillation mode. The influence of the rotating inertia on the switch phenomenon is investigated through a parametric study.

Recently, there has been growing interest in the oxyfuel combustion cycle since it enables high-purity $CO_2 capture with high$ efficiency. However, the oxyfuel combustion cycle has some important issues regarding to its performance such as the requirement of water recirculation to decrease a turbine inlet temperature and proper combustion to enhance cycle efficiency. Also, Some of water vapour remain not condensed at condenser outlet because cycle working fluid contains non-condensable gas, i.e., $CO_2$. The purpose of the present study is to analyze performance characteristics of the oxyfuel combustion cycle with different turbine inlet temperatures, combustion pressures and condenser pressure. It is expected that increasing the turbine inlet temperature improves cycle efficiency, on the other hand, the combustion pressure has specific value to display highest cycle efficiency. And increasing condensing pressure improves water vapour condensing rate.

In this study, an ideal water-recirculated oxy-fuel power generation system is proposed. The results of parametric studies of the performance characteristics of the system are discussed. For a given choice of the turbine inlet temperature, the turbine, which produces power, can be either a gas or a steam turbine. For maximum efficiency, the turbine inlet temperature is selected as the level of state-of-the-art gas turbines and the reheat cycle may be adopted not only to enhance the turbine power but also to maintain dryness of the water with a turbine exhaust temperature that is as high as possible. To obtain a low condensation temperature for a high purity of $CO_2$, a relatively low pressure expansion process may be added. Finally, the performance of the water-recirculated oxy-fuel power generation system is discussed with reference to various operating parameters and system configurations. The optimal operating conditions for high performance and a high purity of $CO_2$ are proposed.

Thermal and nuclear power plants on shore commonly use the sea water for cooling facility. Discharged cooling water has the high kinematic energy potential due to amount of water flux. Numerical analysis was made to find the suitable combinations between the arrangement of tidal turbines and the overall dimensions of the discharged channel. Several parameters such as the turbine diameter to inlet size, and the axial distance to turbine size were investigated. Power coefficients for various test conditions were also compared to see the effect of inlet configurations such as single inlet and dual inlet. For the single inlet, the mean power coefficient appeared to be gradually decreased with increasing distance, and the maximum power was obtained when the turbine diameter was same as the inlet diameter. For the dual inlet, the tendency was similar so that the better result when the turbine diameter was same as the inlet diameter. It is expected that the present methodology can be extensively utilized to harness the high kinetic energy flow of the discharge channel of power plant.
In this study, the use of a micro gas turbine system using biogas to supply heating, cooling and electricity loads of a rural building located in rural area around Tehran has been studied. Initially, the amount of energy needed by the farmhouse was calculated and then the number of needed microturbines was determined. Accordingly, the amount of substances entering biogas digester as well as tank volume were determined. The results of this study showed that village house loads including electrical, heating and cooling and hot water loads can be supplied by using a microturbine with a nominal power of 30 kW and $33.5m^3/day$ of biogas. Digester tank and reservoir tank volumes are $67m^3$ and $31.2m^3$, respectively. The cost of electricity produced by this system is 0.446 US$/kWh. For rural area in Iran, this system is not compatible with micro gas turbine and IC engine system use urban natural gas due to low price of natural gas in Iran, but it can be compatible by wind turbine, photovoltaic and hybrid system (wind turbine& photovoltaic) systems.
In case of low pressure steam turbine used in power plant, it was operated in wet steam and high stress condition. Therefore, it is possible that the corrosion damage of low pressure was induced by this condition. According to previous study, about 30% of total blade failure correspond to corrosion fatigue or SCC(stress corrosion cracking) in low pressure turbine. Especially, LSB(last stage bucket) of low pressure turbine has a higher hardness to prevent erosion damage due to water droplet however, generally this is more dangerous for SCC damage. Therefore, to improve reliability of turbine blade. various methods for SCC evaluation has been developed. In this study, the crack found in LSB during in-service inspection was evaluated using microstructure analysis and stress analysis. From the stress analysis, the optimum size of fillet to remove the crack was proposed. And also, the reliability was evaluated for modified LSB using GOODMAN diagram.
