The present study was conducted to investigate phosphate removal from aqueous solution using industrial wastes, red mud (RM), acid treated red mud (ATRM) and converter furnace steel slag (CFSS). The chemical composition of adsorbents was analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Batch experiments and elution experiments using water tank were performed to examine environmental factors that influences on phosphate removal. Kinetic sorption data of RM, ATRM, and CFSS were described well by the pseudo second-order kinetic sorption model, and equilibrium sorption data of all adsorbents obeyed Freundlich isotherm model. The adsorption capacities of adsorbents followed order: ATRM (7.06 mg/g)>RM (4.34 mg/g)>CFSS (1.88 mg/g). Increasing pH from 3 to 11, the amount of adsorbed phosphate on all RM, ATRM, and CFSS were decreased. The presence of sulfate and carbonate decreased the phosphate removal of RM and ATRM but did not influence on the performance of CFSS. The phosphate removal of RM, ATRM, and CFSS was greater in seawater than deionized water, resulting from the presence of cations in seawater. The water tank elution experiments showed that RM capping blocked the elution of phosphate effectively. It was concluded that the adsorbents can be successfully used for the removal of the phosphate from the aqueous solutions.

Intensive experimental investigations were carried out to provide information of the effects of inflow on the rolling characteristics and stability of ships, which becomes great concern in relation to ship's capsizing. A series of systematic experiments have been performed considering the effects cf combined motion of roll-heave-sway and relevant parameters, such as roll angle and period, tank water height etc. To accommodate this type of experiments with 3-degree of freedom of motion, a bench tester has been developed and verified using existing data. Also, theoretical application of anti-roll tank has been incorporated to support the process of investigation. A model of Ro-Ro ships is used in the present study as this type of vessels, as well as fishing vessels, with large open decks, can loose stability rapidly when there is inflow on the decks.

There are many attempts to use a fuel cell system as a residential power generation system. The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimal design of a water tank for a hot water system when the fuel cell co-generation system is combined with a domestic hot water supply system. The demands of hot water supply per month per home are investigated in Busan for a year. It showed somewhat large differences between the actual demand and the designed demand of hot water, but the actual capacity of hourly averaged hot water demands is analyzed as $60{\ell}/h$ in this study based on the actual demand. The experiments are performed in the various inlet and outlet locations of nozzles, and the hot water consumption rates. The experimental results are showed that the optimal capacity of the water tank is $200{\ell}$ when the thermal efficiency, the storing capacity of hot water and the space for installation are considered.
Sloshing behavior of liquid within containers represents one of the most fundamental fluid-structure interactions. Liquid in partially filled tanks tends to slosh when subjected to external disturbances. Sloshing is a vicious resonant fluid motion in a moving tank. To understand the effect of baffle positioned at L/3 and 2L/3 location, a shake table experiments was conducted for different fill volumes of aspect ratio 0.163, 0.325 and 0.488. For a fixed amplitude of 7.5 mm, the excitation frequencies are varied between 0.457 Hz to 1.976 Hz. Wave probes have been located at both tank ends to capture the surface elevation. The experimental parameters such as sloshing oscillation and energy dissipation are discussed here. Comparison is done for with baffles and without baffles conditions. For both conditions, the results showed that aspect ratio of 0.163 gives better surface elevation and energy dissipation than obtained for aspect ratio 0.325 and 0.488. Good agreement is observed when numerical analysis is compared with the experiments results.

This study examined the reduction effect of a hydrodynamic force acting on the vertical wall of a portable water storage tank with a convex bottom floor. For the numerical simulation, the linearized Peregrine's equation was used to analyze the lapping waves in the tank caused by water falling from a supplying nozzle. The hydrodynamic force could be calculated by measuring the maximum run-up wave height at the vertical wall. The initial conditions of the numerical experiments were set up by controlling the positions and heights of the water supplying nozzle. Finally, the hydrodynamic force acting on the vertical wall can be reduced by the convex bottom design of the portable water storage tank so it can be applied to improve the structural stability.
Thermal performance of a solar heating plastic greenhouse designed for a hydroponic system was studied. The system was constructed with the air-water heat exchanger and thermal storage tank that were combined with hydroponic water beds. Experiments were carried out to investigate the daily average heat stored and released in thermal storage tank, average solar energy collection efficiency, average coefficient of performance, average oil reduction factor of thermal storage system, and the heat transfer coefficient during the nighttime in plastic greenhouse. The results obtained in the present study are summarized as follows. 1. Daily average heat stored in thermal storage tank and released from the thermal storage tank was 1,259 and $797KJ/m^2$ day, respectively. 2. The average solar energy collection efficiency of thermal storage tank was 0.125 during the experiment period. And the average coefficient of performance of thermal storage system in plastic greenhouse was 3.6. 3. The average oil reduction factor of thermal storage system and the heat transfer coefficient during the nighttime in plastic greenhouse were found to be 0.52 and $4.3W/m^2\;hr\;^{\circ}C$, respectively.
A fundamental study on the under water harvest-type ice storage system and its temperature characteristics in ice storage system was performed experimentally. The experiments were conducted by changing the inlet refrigerant temperature of an evaporator to analyzing the thermal fluid motion inside the ice storage tank. From the experimental results, the cold storage characteristics were investigated by measuring the axial and radial temperature variations inside the ice storage tank with respect to the inlet and outlet refrigerant temperatures of an evaporator. In case of the under water harvest-type ice storage system, thermal fluid motion inside the ice storage tank was shown differently in comparison with that of other ice storage systems. During the cooling storage process, there was no supercooling phenomenon in the ice storage tank. These results show the characteristic of this system and the possibility of application to other fields.

This paper presents an analysis to predict thermal behaviors of water in ice storage tank during the coldness release process. To deal with complicated transient phenomena due to ice-water phase change and the density inversion, a theoretical model which consists of initial perfectly mixed, stratified and thermal diffusion state was introduced and a criterion on the growth of thermal boundary layer was developed. The analysis includes considerations on the type of ice-making heat exchanger, refrigerator on/off and tank arrangement. Also, discussions on the various parameters and operating conditions which have influence on the performance of the system were made. Finally, simulated results were shown, which agreed with experiments in trends reasonably.
The objective of this work is to evaluate the hypothesis that a good technique for supplying oxygen to the saturated zone in the presence of light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) pool contamination at the water table is to pass air through the unsaturated zone above the pool. This hypothesis was evaluated in experimental studies performed using a bench-scale, sand-tank reactor, Steady-state abiotic experiments in the sand-tank reactor with air flowing through the reactor headspace demonstrated that oxygen supply through the water table interface into the saturated zone was enhanced when an LNAPL (dodecane) pool was present at the water table. These experimental results confirmed the hypothesis that an LNAPL pool can serve as a high concentration oxygen source to the oxygen-limited area beneath the pool and, as a result, enhance the in situ biodegradation rate.

Tuned Liquid damper and Tuned Liquid Column are kind of passive mechanical damper which relies on the sloshing of liquid in a rigid tank for suppressing structural vibrations. TLD and TLCD are attributable to several potential advantages - low costs ; easy to install in existing structures : effective even for small-amplitude vibrations. In this paper, the shaking table experiments were conducted to investigate the characteristics of water sloshing motion in TLD (rectangular, circular) and TLCD. The parameter obtained from the experiments were wave height, base shear force and energy dissipation. The shaking table experiments show that the liquid sloshing relies on amplitude of shaking table and frequency of tank. The TLCD was more effective control vibration than TLD.
