Steel slag (divided into electric arc furnace slag and convener slag) is being produced by millions of tons per every year in many industrial countries. About 6.5 million tonnes of steel slag is produced yearly as an industrial by-product in Korea. Generally natural aggregate is relatively stable and does not enter into complex chemical reactions with water. Unfortunately, however. steel slag aggregate contains a small amount of free lime. The hydration of free lime makes steel slag aggregate unstable and liable to expand. In this paper, firstly, several aging methods are used in order to decrease the volume expansion of electric arc furnace slag, that is stabilization. The volume expansion of electric arc furnace slag is formulated from the experiment. From the formula, the residual expansibility is predicted with immersion expansion. Compressive strength of concrete with electric arc furnace slag has relation with the residual expansibility in slag aggregate.

This study was carried out to investigate the change of soil physical properties in long-term fertilized paddy soils with a Fine silty family of Typic Halpaqueps (Pyeongtaeg series). Treatments fertilized consisted of no fertilizer, compost, NPK, NPK+compost for thirty one years and of NPK+silicate for seventeen years. Water stable aggregate and degree of aggregate stability, which were higher in surface-soil than sub-soil, were high in order of NPK + compost > NPK + silicate > compost > NPK > no fertilizer plot. The ratio of aggregate larger than 0.5mm was high at compost and silicate plots but that smaller than 0.5mm was high at no fertilizer and NPK plots. And this aggregate stability showed negative correlation with soil hardness and bulk density ; positive correlation with sedimentation volume of soils in water. Sedimentation volume of soils in water was a little higher in surface-soil than sub-soil and in wet soil than dry soil, respectively. Pore space ratio and water retention capacity of soils were the most increased by the application of compost and not affected by silicate as in cases of liquid limit and plastic limit. Ignition loss of soils was high in order of NPK + compost > compost > NPK + silicate > NPK > no fertilizer plot. And field shattering ratio of soil mass smaller than 25.4mm was relatively high in NPK + compost, compost, and silicate plots.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of some soil conditioners, such as polyvinylalcohol(PVA), zeolite and perlite, on the changes of soil physical properties and on tobacco growth in paddy-upland rotated field. Soil conditioners were treated at the rates of 120kg in PVA, 500kg in zeolite and perlite per l0a, respectively. Ratio of soil aggregates formed from the treated plots tended to. be higher than those from the control in the order of PVA > perlite > zeolite. The wet aggregate stability, mean weight diameter, moisture retention and air permeability from the treated plots tended to be higher than those from the control. Amounts of water-stable aggregates of PV A-treated soil increased with higher soil moisture showing a peak at 50% of moisture content. But with respect to particle of size aggregate formed for crop growth and workability in field, it was presumed that 40% of soil moisture content would be most desirable. Visual characters of soil surface throughout the experiment clearly showed that treated soils were maintaining better surface roughness and porosity than control, but difference in water stable aggregates among treated plots tended to be narrowed. The growths of tobacco, espacially its root zone were better in conditioner treated plots than in non-treated plot showing best in PVA-treated soil.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of no-tillage on sequential cropping supported from recycling of first crop ridge on the productivity of crop and physical properties of soil under green house condition. This study is a part of "No-tillage agriculture of Korea-type on recycled ridge". From results for distribution of soil particle size with time process after tillage, soil particles were composed with granular structure in both tillage and no-tillage. No-tillage soil in distribution of above 2 mm soil particle increased at top soil and subsoil compared with tillage soil. Tillage and one year of no-tillage soil were not a significant difference at above 0.25 mm~below 0.5 mm, above 0.5 mm~below 1.0 mm, and above 1.0 mm of water-stable aggregate. Two years of no-tillage soil was significantly increased by 8.2%, 4.5%, and 1.7% at above 0.25 mm~below 0.5 mm, above 0.5 mm~below 1.0 mm, and above 1.0 mm of water-stable aggregate, respectively, compared with one year of no-tillage. Bulk density of top soil was $1.10MG\;m^3$ at tillage and $1.30MG\;m^3$ at one year of no-tillage. Bulk density of top soil was $1.14MG\;m^3$ at two years and $1.03MG\;m^3$ at three years of no-tillage, respectively. Bulk density of subsoil was a similar tendency. Solid phase ratio in top soil and subsoil was increased at one year of no-tillage compared with tillage soil, while soil phase ratio decreased at two and three years of no-tillage. Pore space ratio in tillage top soil (58.5%) was decreased by 8.5% at compared with no-tillage soil (51.0%). Pore space ratio was 56.9% and 61.2% at two and three years of no-tillage soil, respectively. Subsoil was a similar tendency. Gaseous phase ratio was decreased at one year of no-tillage soil, and increased at two and three years of no-tillage soil compared with tillage soil. Liquid phase ratio in top soil was increased at one year of no-tillage (28.3%), and decreased at two years (23.4%) and at three years (18.3 %) of no-tillage soil compared with tillage soil (24.2%). Subsoil was a similar tendency. Liquid phase ratio in subsoil was increased than top soil.
This study aimed to develop reference materials (RMs) for mortar that can simulate the initial flow characteristics with constant quality over a long period. Through the previous research on the development of RMs for cement paste, the combination of limestone, glycerol, and water was used as the basic matrix for developing RMs for mortar in this study. In addition, glass beads of three particle sizes (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mm) and ISO standard sand were selected as tentative candidates to derive fine aggregate substitutes. The mixture of glass beads could simulate the initial flow characteristics of mortar, but under the same mixing ratio, replicates showed an unstable tendency to indicate inconsistent values due to the generation of electrostatic properties between materials and equipment. On the other hand, the mixture using ISO standard Sand not only simulates the constant flow characteristics for a long period of time, but also shows stable results with little error in replicates. Therefore, limestone, glycerol, ISO standard sand, and water were finally determined as components that met the required properties of RMs for mortar. The effect of each component on the flow characteristics of RMs was analyzed. It was found that glycerol increased the cohesion between the particles of standard sand, resulting in a constant increase both in the plastic viscosity and yield stress. Both limestone and standard sand had a dominant effect on the yield stress. The relationships between various mortar mixing ratios and the corresponding mixing ratios of RMs were established. In addition, the results of the verification experiment showed that the rheological properties of the RMs obtained through the relationships correlated with various water/cement ratios and the fine aggregate volume fractions of mortar obtained with same manner. In other words, the RMs for mortar developed in this study can be used as standard samples because they can simulate the initial flow characteristics of mortar of various mixing ratios for a long period without any chemical changes.

Heavy weight concrete can be used in marine concrete structure to improve resistance against high wave energy. However, heavy weight aggregate, which is an indispensable material for heavy weight concrete, is difficult to be supplied in large quantities because its use is limited due to its high cost. In this work, the applicability of heavy weight by-products, copper and 3 month aged steelmaking slags, were evaluated as sources of heavy weight aggregate for marine concrete structures. Experimental results showed that copper slag was found to be a stable material for marine concrete structure. However, 3 month aged steelmaking slag showed significant expansion by $80^{\circ}$ water immersion test and ASTM C 1260 test. In addition, depth of chloride ion penetration in concrete was higher at which steelmaking slags were located. It was associated with porosity of steelmaking slag, and for this reason, steelmaking slag was not found to be suitable for marine concrete structure.
Various physical properties of soils were investigated in the areas where organic farming had been practiced widely, for upland fields. The investigations were also conducted in the nearby fields under conventional to find out the influence of organic farming on the physical properties of soils. The investigated properties involved bulk density, hardness, shearing resistance, friction resistance, sinking depth of small rectangular board, water stable aggregates and the depth of soil available to plants. By and large, the practice of organic farming tended to improve all of the physical properties soils, investigated in upland soils. However, in case of water stable soil aggregates in upland soils, the reverse was previous data; in those soils water stable soil aggregates were less under organic farming. It was suspected that this might be due to intensive application of the organic materials with high C/N ratio like wood chips and wood bark. The contents of OM, Av. P2O5, and Ex. cations were higher in organic farming than those of nearby fields under conventional, due to heavy organic matter application. From the results, It could be concluded that soils under organic farming were looser and softer than those under conventional as shown by lower bulk density and hardness, but that the effect of organic farming on water stable aggregates were low.
Ultra-thin films of amphiphilic Squarylium dye were prepared on the hydrophilic glass substrate by Langumuir-Blodgett(LB) technique. From the measurement of the surface pressure-area($\pi$-A) isotherm at air-water interface, it was found that amphiphilic Squarylium dye can form the stable monolayers. Using the LB technique, the Z-type monolayer assembly can be obtained. The amphiphilic Squarylium dye LB films exhibit λ\ulcorner at 684nm. The absorption is significantly red-shifted from solution of amphiphilic Squarylium dye(637nm in chloroform), suggesting that the Squarylim chromophores form J-aggregate in the LB film.

The aim of the research is, for normal strength range concrete mixture, to evaluate the fluidity development and robustness of the mixture depending on various water reducers. Although a usage of water reducer has been essential to make a concrete under the current conditions of worsen aggregate quality, selection of appropriate performance of water reducer is significant. Hence, in this research, regarding the normal strength range mortar, three different performance of water reducers were evaluated in aspects of securing fluidity, and robustness, rheological behaviors. Additionally, for the concrete mixture, the fluidity change was evaluated depending on unit water content for each different water reducer, and the water reducing performance with manufacturing cost was compared and analyzed. By the result of this research, it is expected to provide a case of determining appropriate kind of water reducer and to contribute on conditions of securing sufficient fluidity with stable quality and economical advantage.
This study is aimed to derive the optimum mix proportion of the combined self compacting concrete according to cement types (blast-furnace slag cement and belite cement) and to propose the basic data to field construction work after evaluating the quality properties. Specially, lime stone powder (LSP) as binder and viscosity agent are used in the combined self compacting concrete because slurry wall of an underground LNG storage tank should be kept stability of quality during concrete working. Replacement ratio of LSP is determined by confined water ratio test and main design factors including fine aggregate ratio ($S_r$), coarse aggregate ratio ($G_v$) and water-cement ratio (W/C) are selected. Also, quality properties including setting time, bleeding content, shortening depth and hydration heat on the optimum mix proportion of the combined self compacting concrete according to cement type are compared and analyzed. As test results, the optimum mix proportion of the combined self compacting concrete according to cement type is as followings. 1) Slag cement type-replacement ratio of LSP 13.5%, $S_r$ 47% and W/C 41%. 2) Belite cement type-replacement ratio of LSP 42.7%, Sr 43% and W/C 51%. But optimum coarse aggregate ratio is 53% regardless of cement types. Also, as test results regarding setting time, bleeding content, shortening depth and hydration heat of the combined self compacting concrete by cement type, belite cement type is most stable in the quality properties and is to apply the actual construction work.
