Membrane fouling at different solids retention times (SRT) (7, 12 and 20 days) was studied under well-controlled conditions in a laboratory-scale aerobic submerged membrane bioreactor under constant biomass concentration using a synthetic high strength wastewater. An increase in SRT was found to improve membrane performance and this correlated to changes in the total production of bound extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and the composition and properties of bound EPS using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and floc sizes. A larger amount of total bound EPS was found at the lowest SRT (7 days) tested but the ratio of proteins (PN) to carbohydrates (CH) in bound EPS increased with an increase in SRT. Similarly, the quantity of soluble microbial products (SMP) decreased with an increase in SRT and the SMP PN/CH ratio increased with an increase in SRT. SMP concentrations positively correlated to the percentage of membrane pore blocking resistance. The quantity of total bound EPS and total SMP positively corresponded to the membrane fouling rate, while the PN/CH ratio in the bound EPS and SMP negatively correlated to the membrane fouling rate. The results show that both the quantity and composition of bound EPS and SMP and floc sizes are important in controlling membrane fouling.
Strains degrading and decolorizing acid dyes, Nylosan red E-BL 150%. were isolated from natural system, was named as ARK3. The optimal culture conditions of temperature and pH were $35^\circ{C}$, 7.0, respectively. Growth rate of cells in conditions of aerobic shaking more than standing culture conspicuously increased, and optical density of those to strain ARK3 were found as 1.38 and 0.25 after 42 hrs. Decolorization efficiency in batch culture which used as immobilization media to natural zeolite was 15% after 6 hrs, while suspension culture was 5%, also its of immobilization and suspension culture were 90% and 85% after 48 hrs, respectively. Decolorization efficiency of air-lift bioreactor was more than 90% to a dilution rate of $0.038hr^{-1}$, but that was decreased as 70%, when the dilution rate was $0.05hr^{-1}$. Even though at maximum dilution rate of this study, there was not appeared "wash out" phenomienon of biomass. Decolorization efficiency was 97.7% at a dilution rate of $0.025hr^{-1}$, when influent dye concentration was $100mg/\ell$. But if influent dye concentration increased as $150mg/\ell$, even though MLVSS increased, that of treatment water decreased as 93%. Also, when influent dye concentration increased as $200mg/\ell$ and $300mg/\ell$, decolorization efficiencies of treatment water abruptly decreased as 85% and 63%, respectively. Decolorization efficiency was more than 92% to the limit volumetric loading rate of $3.75mg/\ell\cdot{hr}$hr, without regard to variation of influent dye concentration or hydraulic retention time. if volumetric loading rate was more than $3.80mg/\ell\cdot{hr}$, at same condition, decolorization efficiency was lower decrease of retention time than increase of influent dye concentration.entration.
This study aimed to verify the nutritional and curative effects of protein hydroysate in rats model with gastric ulcer induced by restraint and water-immersion stress. Sprague-Dawley, famale rats weighing approximtely 200g were forced in 5$\times$5$\times$15cm plexiglas cage. The restraint and water immersion stress was carried at 20$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$ for 8-hours. After stress 4 kinds of diets(10% casein, 20% casein, 10% casein hydrolysate, 20% casein hydrolysate) were given for 5 days. In the gastric ulcer rats model, the growth, gastric emptying rate, trypsin activity in gastrointestinal content, plasma total protein, albumin, $\alpha$-amino-N, UUN, creatinine and hydroxyproline of the urine and nitrogen retention were analyzed for nutritional effects of dietary nitrogen levels(10%, 20%) and sources (casein, casein hydrolysate). The results were as follows ; In gastric ulcer rats model, severeness of ulcer, plasma protein, gastric emptying rate, nitrogen retention rate were not different between 20% casein-fed group and 20% casein hydrolysatefed group. But 10% casein hydrolysate-fed group had more curative group. The casein hydrolysate diet-fed group was lower trysin activity in small intestianl content than the casein-fed group, at both casein level(10%, 20%). Finally at 20% levels, there was no difference between casein and casein hydrolysate diet, but 10% level, casein hydrolysate diet was more curative of ulcer than casein diet in gastric ulcer rat model. The results of this study provide useful information concerning diet therapy for the patients with gastrointestinal diseases and the field of enteral diet materials.
The effect of a highly water absorbing polyacrylate polymer, commonly called K-sorb, at rates of 0.0, 0.05, 0.2, and 0.5% by weight on the water retention properties of three soils, and the longevities of these treatment effects were evaluated. Water retentions were measured for all the treatments by use of a pressure-plate extractor in the laboratory. Available water and three-phase distributions at moisture tensions of 0.01, 0.3, and 15b were calculated from water retentivity data. A randomized block experiment of Chinese cabbages was conducted to examine the effects and the longevities of the treatments(0.0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2%) on water retention of Jungdong sandy loam soil in the field. Water retentions for a loamy sand, sandy loam, and loam soil, treated with 0.2 and 0.5% K-sorb, were increased. K-sorb treatments were more effective in sandy soil than in loamy soils. Water contents for the 0.5% treatment were markedly greater than those for the 0.2% treatment at earth moisture tension. K-sorb only at a rate of 0.5% remained effective in water retention of each soil through repeated drying and wetting for 12 months. Duncan's multiple range showed 0.2% treatment was effective(at the level of 0.05) after 2 months but not after 10 months under field condition.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of PAC(Powder Activated Carbon) retention time on stable operation of high concentration powered activated carbon(HCPAC-MBR) in the treatment of secondary domestic wastewater. The pilot scale HCPAC-MBR system was operated at two different SRTs, 25 days and 100 days. The main drawback of HCPAC-MBR system was the rapid increase of trans-membrane pressure. The increase rate of trans-membrane pressure was proportional to SRT value at constant flux. This result seemed to be caused by reduced amount of EPS adsorbed on the PAC in the reactor by decreasing the SRT of the PAC. The particle size of the PAC was also influenced by SRT. The PAC size was decreased as SRT was increased. The change of particle size could be one reason for the change of trans-membrane pressure. The pore volume in the cake-layer formed on the membrane surface became to be increased by reducing SRT, because the cake-layer was highly composed of the PAC. Therefore, increased pore volume might play a role to reduce the trans-membrane pressure. The removal rate of E260 and TOC was also inversely proportional to SRT value.

This study was performed to figure out what would be effective to improve water environment in a retention pond which was located in Incheon. Chemical coagulation, seawater flocculation and Fenton treatment were carried out to improve water and sediment quality for the retention pond. Experimental results showed that pH of 11 was optimum pH for seawater flocculation and the high removal rates in terms of SS and T-P can be obtained by seawater flocculation. To eliminate the pollutants from the sediments we applied Fenton oxidation process. We compared whether direct oxidizing the sediments would be more effective than oxidizing them after elution. By Fenton oxidation only, the COD removal rate was 0.55 grams per one $H_2O_2$ gram. Whereas the removed COD grams per one $H_2O_2$ gram were 0.69 by Fenton oxidation after elution. It showed that the oxidizing after elution was about 25% more effective than the oxidizing without elution. Both treatments could improve the water quality of a retention pond from a level 6(very bad) to a level 3(normal) of Lake Water Quality Standard.
A sedimentation basin for agricultural water quality improvement was researched to analyze the water quality purification characteristics. The sedimentation basin constructed at the inlet of Gamdon reservoir in Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do was selected as the research field of this study. The surface area of the sedimentation basin is $34,000m^2$, volume is $122,000m^3$, and hydraulic retention time is 0.3hr~7.3day. The average influent loading of SS was 156.6kg-SS/d, and the effluent loading was 67.5kg-SS/d with the average removal rate of 56.9%. The average influent loadings of BOD and COD were 33.0kg-BOD/d and 60.3kg-COD/d respectively, and the effluent loadings were 26.4kg-BOD/d and 48.6kg-COD/d with the average removal rate of 20.1% and 19.3% respectively. Therefore, the results of this study show that a sedimentation basin can purify SS and organic matters. The average influent loadings of T-N and T-P were 28.7kg-TN/d and 2.97kg-TP/d respectively, and the effluent loadings were 16.3kg-TN/d and 1.41kg-TP/d with the average removal rate of 43.0% and 52.6% respectively. In conclusion, the overall results of this study show that a sedimentation basin is a feasible alternative to purify organic matters and nutrients.

Reduction of fresh water consumption and effluent discharge provide diverse advantages in raw materials and energy savings. Papermaking system closure, however, reduces the efficiency of additives, decreases retention and dewatering, and causes many other Problems in papermaking. Accumulation of inorganic and organic substances in the process white water is the prime cause of these problems. Understanding of the accumulation phenomena of the detrimental substances in the papermaking process is of great importance for papermaking system closure. In this study a process simulation method was employed to analyze the accumulation phenomena of anionic starch in the process white water as the reuse rate of dry broke and pick up of surface sizing agent is increased. Steady state simulation studies were carried out based on the model developed in previous study. The variation of dissolved starch concentration in each process unit was monitored as a function of reuse rate of dry broke and surface sizing agent pick up rate. The result showed that dissolved starch concentration Increased as reuse rate of dry broke and surface sizing agent pick up rate was increased.
Vegetation cover plays a vital role in stabilizing the soil structure, thereby contributing to surface erosion control. Surface vegetation acts as a shelterbelt that controls the flow velocity and reduces the kinetic energy of the water near the soil surface, whereas vegetation roots reinforce the soil via the formation of root-particle interactions that reduce particle detachment. In this study, two vegetation-testing trials were conducted. The first trial was held on cool-season turfgrasses seeded in a biopolymer-treated site soil in an open greenhouse. At the end of the test, the most suitable grass type was suggested for the second vegetation test, which was conducted in an environmental control chamber. In the second test, biopolymers, namely, starch and xanthan gum hydrogels (pure starch, pure xanthan gum, and xanthan gum-starch mixtures), were tested as soil conditioners for improving the water-holding capacity and vegetation growth in sandy soils. The results support the possibility that biopolymer treatments may enhance the survival rate of vegetation under severe drought environments, which could be applicable for soil stabilization in arid and semiarid regions.

The greater Increase of the demand for environmental friendly materials especially for packaging industry leads to the larger interest in the reusable and recycable materials such as pulp mold. Although the pulp mold has great characteristics for packaging, some deficiency compared with other packaging material like EPS(Expandable Polystyrene) need to be overcome, for example, the relative higher cost. In this report, since the water drainage rate at the forming zone of a wet pulp mold process could have a great influence on the economical efficiency not only by increasing machine speed but also reducing the drying energy, the optimum ways for increasing drainage were investigated The mechanism of vacuum drainage In pulp mold forming was successfully evaluated by using RDA(Retention and Darinage Analyzer). Since the conditions of stock were greatly affected by the pulping time of low consistency pulper, the optimum pupling time was investigated with considerations of all stock preparation processes. The change of stock temperature and the addition of polyelectrolyte could improve the vacuum drainage rate. It was founded that the wire mesh types of mold former had a little influence on the retention because of the relatively mild vacuum drainage. However, the bigger size of dewatering hole showed better drainage rate and could reduce the plugging and con lamination of mold.
