Utilizing the grazing effect of fresh water clams (Unio douglasiae) for the remediation of algal bloom during summer

  • The occurrence of 'algal bloom', caused by the mass proliferation of phytoplankton, causes serious problems in streams and lakes in Korea. Therefore, in this study, the phytoplankton filter-feeding trait of Unio douglasiae, a type of freshwater clam, was used to reduce the algal bloom in outdoor water tanks during the summer. This involved the construction of a U. douglasiae cultivation apparatus, wherein 1,000 clams were divided into 8 rectangular baskets arranged in the shape of an empty square. The control tank was manufactured in exactly the same shape within the water tank, but without the addition of clams. The algal bloom-reducing effect of U. douglasiae was confirmed by the measurement of (and comparing between) the water quality at the center and periphery of the test and control cultivation apparatus. Water quality measurements included the measurement of water temperature, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen (DO) content, and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ concentrations; the water quality was measured twice a month between June and November 2014.The results of these analyses did not show a significant difference in water quality (temperature, pH, turbidity, DO) between the center and periphery of the test and control tanks. However, the chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ concentration was observed to be much lower at the center of the test tank compared to that at the center and periphery of the control tank, as well as at the periphery of the test tank. This was believed to be a result of the U. douglasiae surrounding the center of the test tank, which prevented the influx of plankton from the periphery. Accordingly, the results of these analyses suggest the possibility that U. douglasiae cultivation could reduce the proliferation of algal blooms in lakes and streams during the summer. In particular, these results indicate possible improvements in U. douglasiae activity (reduction in algal blooms) by their effective arrangement in the water bodies.

  • The goal of this study is to forecast the trend of stream quality and to suggest some policy alternatives in Gumbo river. It used the five different monthly time series data such as BOD, COD, T-N and EC of the nine of Gumbo River measurement points from Jan. 1998 to Dec. 2006. Water pollution is serious at Gumbo2 and Palgeo stream measurement points. BOD, COD, T-N and EC data are analyzed with the exponential smoothing model and the trend is forecasted until Dec. 2009.

수질 측정용 플로우 셀의 오염 모니터링을 위한 평면광도파로 센서 (PLC Optical Sensor for Contamination Monitoring on the Flow-Cell in the Water Quality Measurement System)

  • We have proposed a novel planar lightwave circuit (PLC) optical sensor to monitor the contamination in a flow-cell where water is continuously supplied through a water quality measurement system. We designed a PLC chip with a V-shape waveguide and the simulated its function as a sensor for monitoring contamination in a flow-cell using a numerical the FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) analysis. A novel cross type of waveguide was introduced to make the PLC chip of the V-shaped waveguide. The fabricated PLC was cut into the cross waveguide. A change in the optical propagation loss of the PLC sensor was observed after immersing the PLC sensor into city water. It was determined that the propagation loss of the PLC sensor was 3 dB at a wavelength of $1.55{\mu}m$ in the city water for 15 days.

  • The unit-water content of concrete is one of the important factors in determining the quality of concrete and is directly related to the durability of the construction structure, and the current method of measuring the unit-water content of concrete is applied by the Air Meta Act and the Electrostatic Capacity Act. However, there are complex and time-consuming problems with measurement methods. Therefore, high frequency moisture sensor was used for quick and high measurement, and unit-water content of mortar was evaluated through machine running and deep running based on measurement big data.

하천 합류부에서의 부유입자 분포에 대한 현장측정 (Field Measurement of Suspended Material Distribution at the River Confluence)

  • 하천 합류부에서는 지형적 특성에 기인하는 고유한 수체혼합양상과 흐름특성을 보인다. 이러한 합류부에서의 2차원적 수체혼합양상을 파악하기 위해서는 측선기반이 아닌 평면적 계측이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 낙동강-금호강 합류부를 대상으로 UAV를 활용한 정성적 수체혼합모니터링과 ADCP, 다항목수질측정기, 현장용광학입도분석기(LISST : Laser In-Situ Scattering & Transmissometry)를 이용한 흐름, 수질, 부유입자특성에 대한 측정을 통해 하천합류부에서의 2차원적 수체흐름 및 물질혼합 특성을 파악할 수 있는 현장측정기법을 제시하고 적용성을 검토하고자 하였다. 수리량, 수질인자, 부유입자의 농도 및 입도분포에 대한 현장측정을 통해 복잡한 지형적 특성을 가지는 하천합류부에서의 2차원적 흐름양상과 그에 따른 수체 및 물질혼합양상을 파악할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

  • 수질 감시를 위한 물벼룩 활동량 측정을 실시간으로 측정하는 하드웨어를 구현 하였다. 물벼룩은 수질 감시에 빈번히 시용하는 살아있는 생물학적 센서라고 할 수 있다. 물벼룩은 수질이 오염이 되면 활동량의 변화가 나타나기 때문에 물벼룩의 활동량을 감시함으로서 해당 수질의 독성 물질의 유입을 즉각 확인할 수 있다. 물벼룩의 활동량 조사는 기존의 방법은 LED를 이용한 발광부와 Photo TR.을 이용한 수광부를 사용하는 방법이 있으나 물벼룩이 빛에 민감하게 반응하고 측정 대상인 물벼룩을 기준에 두고 2 개의 장치(발광부와 수광부)를 두는 불편한 점이 있었다. 본 논문은 기존의 방식을 대체하기 위해 CCD 카메라를 사용한다. CCD 카메라의 영상처리를 위해 이미지 버퍼에 저장한 후 컴퓨터나 DSP를 사용하여 소프트웨어로 일괄 처리를 하는 것이 아니라 실시간으로 하드웨어로 처리하는 시스템을 구현하였다. 그리고 구현된 하드웨어로 수질 경보를 위한 원격 모니터링 임베디드 시스템을 구축하였다.

  • 5th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Weather (AR5) predicts that recent severe hydrological events will affect the quality of water and increase water pollution. To analyze changes in water quality due to future climate change, input data (precipitation, average temperature, relative humidity, average wind speed, and solar radiation) were compiled into a representative concentration curve (RC), defined using 8.5. AR5 and future use are calculated based on land use. Semi-distributed emission model Calculate emissions for each target period. Meteorological factors affecting water quality (precipitation, temperature, and flow) were input into a multiple linear regression (MLR) model and an artificial neural network (ANN) to analyze the data. Extensive experimental studies of flow properties have been carried out. In addition, an Acoustic Doppler Velocity (ADV) device was used to monitor the flow of a large open channel connection in a wastewater treatment plant in Ho Chi Minh City. Observations were made along different streams at different locations and at different depths. Analysis of measurement data shows average speed profile, aspect ratio, vertical position Measure, and ratio the vertical to bottom distance for maximum speed and water depth. This result indicates that the transport effect of the compound was considered when preparing the hazard analysis.

수질샘플빈도에 따른 산림유역의 비점원오염부하특성 (Characteristics of Nonpoint Source Pollutant Loads from Forest watershed with Various Water Quality Sampling Frequencies)

  • A monsoon season monitoring data from June to September, 2005 of a small forested watershed located at the upstream of the North Han River system in Korea was conducted to analyze the flow variations, the NPS pollutant concentrations, and the pollution load characteristics with respect to sampling frequencies. During the 4-month period, 1,423 mm or 79.2% of annual rainfall(1,797 mm) were occurred and more than 77%, 54% and 68% of annual T-N, $NO_3$-N and T-P loads discharged. Flow rate was continuously measured with automatic velocity and water level meters and 58 water quality samples were taken and analyzed. It was analyzed that the flow volume by random measurement varied very widely and ranged from 79% to 218% of that of continuous measurement. It was recommended that flow measurement of small forested watersheds should be continuously measured with automated flow meters to precisely measure flow rates. Flow-weighted mean concentrations of T-N, $NO_3$-N and T-P during the period were 2.114 mg/L, 0.836 mg/L, and 0.136 mg/L, respectively. T-N, $NO_3$-N and T-P loads were sensitive to the number of samples. And it was analyzed that in order to measure the pollution load within the error of 10% to the true load, the rate of sampling frequency should be higher than 89.7% of the sample numbers that were required to compute the true pollution load. If it is compared to selected foreign research results, about 10 water samples for each rainfall event were needed to compute the pollution load within 10% error. It is unlikely in Korea and recommended that thorough NPS pollution monitoring studies are required to develop the standard monitoring procedures for reliable NPS pollution quantification.

현장측정용 센서부착 자동채수기 개발 (Development of Automatic Water Sampler with Sensor for Practical Measurement)

  • 현재 시행되고 있는 수질오염 총량관리제나 수질 TMS 등과 같은 수자원 보호에 대한 국가 관심도를 미루어 볼 때 자동채수기는 반드시 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 수입에 의존하는 자동채수기를 개발하여, 외화낭비를 줄이고 동시에 기능적 성능을 높이는 데 있다. 개발결과물들을 얻고자 몇 가지 노력을 하였다. 이를 위하여 현장측정용 유량센서, 즉, Flow Meter를 자동채수기에 설치하여 연동 운영될 수 있는 기술개발을 했으며, 개발된 현장측정용 센서에서 송신되는 데이터를 원격으로 모니터링 및 저장할 수 있는 원격 D/L 시스템을 개발하였다. 또한, 개발된 자동채수기를 실제 하수처리장에 설치하여 운전해 보았고, 그 결과 현장적용이 충분히 가능함을 확인할 수 있었다.

주암호 유역의 총인과 총질소 부하 특성 (Loading characteristics of Total Phosphorus and Total Nitrogen from the Juam Lake Watershed)

  • A subwatershed within the Lake Juam was monitored to identify hydrologic and water quality characteristics. Rainfall record was collected and flow rate measurement and water quality sampling were conducted periodically at the watershed outlet. Water quality of storm period was worse than that of base flow period. Nutrient loading from the watershed was governed by only a few storms during study period. Nonpoint source pollution was identified major problem for water quality management in Juam Lake.
