  • The attainment ratios of the water quality goals of the 114 mid-watershed representative stations, examined during the period2011 to 2015, were evaluated in the study. Of the four major river basins, the attainment ratio on water quality goal of the Geum River basin turned out to be the lowest. As a result of formal evaluation of the attainment ratios of BOD, COD and TOC, it was found that the attainment ratio of COD was much lower than that of BOD and TOC (I a circumstance thought to be caused by the higher COD/BOD and COD/TOC ratios of the water quality of the river than those of the environmental water quality standard). As well, higher COD/BOD and COD/TOC of wastewater discharged from point and non-point sources (other than those of the environmental water quality standards) might possibly represent one of the reasons. We also compared attainment ratio between the main stream and tributaries, which indicated that the higher attainment ratio was present in the main stream. The attainment ratio is also documented as more significant in the winter season than the summer season, possibly due to the contribution of non-point pollutants swept in by rain during the summer season during documented periods of high precipitation. Thus, water quality management in summer season and improvement of water quality of the tributaries might be important as a means of increasing attainment ratio on water quality goal.

  • Load Duration Curve(LDC) is a useful tool for analyzing water quality characteristics under various stream flow conditions. This study investigated the methods to identify impaired waterbodies in the assessment of water quality goal attainment by using LDC for the management of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). Three methods were proposed. Non-typical regime exclusion method is a method to exclude water quality observations in the non-typical extreme flow conditions in order to minimize the influence of non-ordinary water quality. Flow regime weighted average method is a method to calculate weighted mean water quality instead of arithmetic mean in order to consider water characteristics properly on stream flow regime in addition to the effect of Non-typical regime exclusion method. Load exceeded interval comparison method is a method to compare the intervals between the attained and non-attained load duration periods on the LDC. The assessment of water quality goal attainment can be performed more reasonably and precisely considering water quality variations on stream flow conditions by applying these proposed methods.

  • The water quality variations or changes are closely relevant to the characteristics of unit watersheds and have an effect on the attainment of their water quality goal. This study was conducted to analyze the water quality distribution and its change patterns of unit watersheds in Nakdong river basin. It revealed that 25 unit watersheds out of 41 showed the normality in water quality. Most of unit watersheds had a considerable variation in water quality, especially in the season of spring and summer but a little in terms of flow rate. Annual relative differences in water quality ranged from 13.0 to 26.6% with the maximum of 75%. 28 unit watersheds (62%) had the tendency to decrease in water quality as the flow rate increased while 13 (38%) to increase. The extension of standard flow led to considerable differences in water quality depending on its ranges, which meant uncertainties might be included in the process of TMDL development. It is suggested that annual average flow rate should be chosen as a standard flow in the area where the water quality change has little relation to the flow rate.
