  • The results of investigation on the water quality of the unit watersheds in the Yeongsang/Seomjin River indicate that $BOD_5$, SS, T-P decrease in most of the unit watersheds. However, $COD_{Mn}$ and T-N increase since the Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). It is thought that $COD_{Mn}$, which is included non-biodegradable matters, is difficult to decrease only using by conventional biological treatment facilities and T-N is affected by non-point source, etc. The results of assessment on 3 years $BOD_5$ indicate that most of the unit watersheds were being improved except Yeongbon A, Seombon C and Yocheon B. In addition, it was found that T-P were also being improved except Yocheon B and Hwangryeong A. Consequently, water qualities of the unit watersheds have been improved in many cases since the TMDLs.

  • The water qualities of Namdae-stream, Yeongok-stream and Sacheon-stream were examined, by using physicochemical factors, trophic status and epilithic diatoms from May 2008 to February 2009. The physicochemical water qualities of three streams were, except for some construction areas and sites of downstream, generally good, having less concentration than BOD of $2\;mg\;L^{-1}$. As for the sites of downstream, there were ongoing pollution such as graduation of nutrients in Namdae-stream and Sacheon-stream, due to salinity of seawater and topographical feature of the closed estuary. The examination of trophic status of Namdae-stream showed mesotrophic status in all the sites. Also, eutrophication was in progress as from the upstream to the downstream of Yeongok-stream, and Sacheon-stream showed eutrophic status in all its sites. As a result of the biological water quality assessment, Namdae-stream, excluding the downstream site, came out to be $\beta\sim\alpha$-oligosaprobic, and biological water quality was good, having TDI less than 50. Some construction sites and downstream site of Namdae-stream are $\beta$-mesosaprobic, and with the TDI over 70, the biological water quality assessment came out to be polluted. Yeongok-stream is $\beta\sim\alpha$-oligosaprobic, and its biological water quality is good, having TDI less than 40. Sacheon-stream, excluding the upstream site on May 2008 and February 2009, is $\beta\sim\alpha$-mesosaprobic, and its TDI over 70 shows that it has been polluted. The correlation analysis showed a high correlation in both DAlpo and TDI. Also, biological assessment of water quality (DAIpo, TDI) showed higher correlation with TSI rather than BOD.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of water extract of Gardenia jasminoides (WEGJ) on the sensory qualities, color value and shelf-life characteristics (pH, total no. of Bacillus and TBA value) of cooked rice. The total color difference(ΔE) was increased when WEGJ was added. The sensory dualities of cooked rice added with WEGJ had no significant difference in color, taste and torture compared with control group. The pH value of cooked rice addeded with 250 ppm and 500 ppm of WEGJ was less declined compared with control group. WEGJ at the concentration of 250 ppm and 500 ppm had an antimicrobial activity and WEGJ at 500ppm showed an antioxidant activity in cooked rice.

  • It has been reported that few manufacturers of cement mortar for precast products use chemical and mineral admixture due to the absense of restrictions related to the application of admixture and the poor manufacturing facilities. Therefore, this paper is intended to contribute to the improvement of quality by investigating the properties of cement mortar for precast products using fly ash, blast furnace slag and AE water reducing agent. According to the test results. it was found that the cement mortar products using fly ash and AE water-reducing agent had better qualities than those of ordinary portland cement.

  • The stochastic variations were analyzed periodicity by autocorrelation, variance spectrum and Fourier series. These time series included hourly and hourly mean observations on DO, water temperature and air temperature which measured by automatic recording instrument at Guii from 1, Jan., 1986 to 23, Feb., 1986. The results of study were as follows: l. Autocorrelation coef. (lag time 120) DO($\varrho_1$= 0.9705), WT($\varrho_1$ = 0.9890), and AT($\varrho_1$ = 0.9874) were deeply related. DO and AT clearly showedr 24-hour periodicities while WT showed 23-26 hour periodicity. 2. Spectral density showed high at 24 hour in eech item and all of them showed weak peak at 12 hour. 3. The explained variance, which was a measure of the contribution of periodic function to the original time series, varied high 90.8 - 94.7%. This results showed that water qualities at Guii were affected deterministic components.

  • This paper examines the applicability of DAF-system to the domestic sewers for the effective CSOs treatment. The procedures for the experiment include mainly two steps. One is to analyse the water qualities and settling test of the CSOs and the other focuses on general characteristics of the CSOs such as the removal efficiency of pollutant, the distribution of particle size and mass balance of DAF-system. The result of this study show that the application of DAF-system is more effective and economical than the existing treatment systems because it has two removal mechanisms of sedimentation and flotation simultaneously.

  • Pasig River is an important river in the Metro Manila, Philippines, since it provides food, livelihood and transport to its residents, and connects two major water bodies; Laguna de Bay and Manila Bay. However, it is now considered to be the toilet bowl of Metro Manila due to the large amount of wastes dumped into the river. Even with the efforts of the government to revive the quality of the Pasig River and its tributaries, it continues to deteriorate over time. This paper provides an overview of the current condition of the Pasig River. The existing water management policies were reviewed, and the issues and challenges hindering the improvement of its water quality identified. Moreover, the water qualities of the rivers in Metro Manila were compared to those of the major rivers in South Korea. The current watershed management system practiced by South Korea has been discussed to serve as a guideline for future recovery of the water quality of the rivers in the Philippines.

  • The pollution in closing water can be caused by not only artificial factor like sewage but also natural factor like elution from sediment. In this study we analyzed Sediment Oxygen Demand (SOD) for verification of sediment purification effect and sediment elution experiment as well as general items like COD, TN, TP, SS to complement and assess the effect of sediment and water quality. The experiment result showed that the release rate of OSD system were 4 times and 3 times as large as control for P and Fe respectively. SOD for operated OSD system and control were $12.18gO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$ and $47.95gO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$. From water qualities analyzed by COD, TN, TP, SS, chlorophyll-a, the removal efficiency increase of TN, TP, chlorophyll-a and COD were about 10~20%, 40~50% and 10% respectively. In conclusion, OSD can contribute to improvement of both the waterbody and the sediment environment effectively.

  • Long-term trends and distribution patterns of water quality were investigated in the Asan coastal areas of Yellow Sea, Korea from 1975 to 2005. Water samples were collected at 3 stations and physicochemical parameters were analyzed including water temperature, salinity, suspended solids(SS), chemical oxygen demand(COD), dissolved oxygen(DO) and nutrients. Spatial distribution patterns were not clear among stations but the seasonal variations were distinct except COD, SS and nitrate. The trend analysis by principal component analysis(PCA) during twenty years revealed the significant variations in water quality in the study area, Annual water qualities were clearly discriminated into 4 clusters by PCA; year cluster 1988-1991, 1994-1997, and 1992-1993/1998-2005. By this multi-variate analysis we can summarize the annual trends as the followings; salinity, suspended solids and dissolved oxygen tended to increase from late 1980's, increased pH and COD from 1992, and decreased salinity and increased nitrogen and COD from 1990 due to the runoff frow agricultural lands causing eutrophication.

  • This study evaluated advanced water treatment (AWT) system in Korea. There are currently 16 plants operating with AWT. However, no attempt has been made to evaluate AWT system. This study selected one water treatment plant with AWT (pre-ozonation + BAC). Using the operation data from 1995 to 2001 and pilot study results, the post-evaluation of the AWT system has been conducted. The study found that AWT improved water qualities of organic, ammonia, and turbidity, as expected. However, the extent of the improvement was generally short of the pilot study expectations. Pre-ozonation failed to decrease coagulant consumption. The dosage increased rather than decreased. AWT was, however, successful to decrease chlorine consumption. The chlorine reduction was related to the change in raw water characteristics and AWT introduction. Pre-ozonation failed to decrease coagulant consumption. The dosage increased rather than decreased. AWT was, however, successful to decrease chlorine consumption. The chlorine reduction was related to the change in raw water characteristics and AWT introduction, Both operation of pre-ozonation and reduced ammonia loading were responsible for the reduction. AWT increased the operation cost. Maintenance, raw water, and power cost increased, while labor and chemical cost decreased. Manpower reduction resulting form automation caused the decrease of labor cost. The reduction of chlorine consumption caused the decrease of chemical cost.
