  • This study evaluates treatment efficiencies of pollutants in Boknae bio-park constructed wetlands surrounding Juam Lake for 5 years from January 2006 to December 2010, in order to treat non-point pollutants effectively. The analysis of monthly treatment efficiency of pollutants shows that the scope of BOD is -19.11~37.72%, and of COD is 30.14~27.38%, thus the monthly deviation COD is relatively higher than BOD, and the scope of SS is -54.07~64.82%. Moreover, the analysis of seasonal treatment efficiency of pollutants shows that the treatment efficiency of TN is higher than 36.8% on average for 5 years in the spring and winter, and of TP relatively lower than other pollutants, however, the seasons don't make much difference to the treatment efficiency of TP.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the current status, including the maintenance problems and removal efficiency, of small sewage treatment facilities in Chung-nam province(Asan, Buyeo, and Gongju city). Our results showed that inflow water quality of Asan city was 19.1 mg/L of BOD, 29.0 mg/L of COD, 13.4 mg/L of T-N and 1.5 mg/L of T-P, respectively, which was much higher than any other site. Among the factors known to be an important index of water quality, the SS and BOD removal efficiency was about 70% and 50% respectively. However, the nitrogen removal efficiency was less than 10%. The total removal efficiency of pollutant was 71.1% of SS, 52.6% of BOD, 46.2% of COD, 9.2% of T-P and 4.6% of T-N respectively. Therefore nitrogen removal processes are required to prevent serious eutrophication of small river. Removal efficiency for BOD and SS of high-efficient sewage treatment facilities (STFs) and contact oxidation process was much higher than another process. Performance of these sewage treatment facilities(STFs) is not optimal due to ineffective planning for the inflow water quality. To improve these facilities, it is proposed that a technical expert analysis of water quality at these facilities is periodically required.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of stormwater runoff by rainfall type in orchard areas and transportation areas for 2 years(2010~2011year). Effluents were monitored to calculate the Event Mean Concentrations(EMCs) and runoff loads of each pollutant. The pollutant EMCs by volume of stormwater runoff showed the ranges of BOD 0.9~13.6 mg/L, COD 13.7~45.2 mg/L, SS 4.1~236.4 mg/L, T-N 2.123~21.111 mg/L, T-P 0.495~2.214 mg/L in the orchard areas, and was calculated as BOD 2.3~22.5mg/L, COD 4.4~91.1 mg/L, SS 4.3~138.3 mg/L, T-N 0.700~13.500 mg/L, T-P 0.082~1.345 mg/L in the transportation areas. The correlation coefficient of determination in the orchard area was investigated in the order of Total Rainfall(0.81) > Total Runoff(0.76) > Rainfall Intensity(0.56) > Rainfall Duration(0.46) > Antecedent Dry Days(0.27). Also, in the case of the transportation area was investigated in the order of Total Rainfall (0.55) > Total Runoff(0.54) > Rainfall Intensity(0.53) > Rainfall Duration(0.24) > Antecedent Dry Days(0.14). As the result, comparing valuables relating to runoff of non-pollutant source between orchard areas and transportation areas, orchard area($R^2{\geq}0.5$ : X3, X4, X5) was investigated to have more influence of diverse independent valuables compared to the transportation area($R^2{\geq}0.5$ : X3, X4) and the difference of discharge influence factor by the land characteristics appeared apparently.

  • WASP4. an estuarine or lake water quality model, wat applied to simulate future water qualities at alternative withdrawal sites for capital areas. Simulated water quality constituents were Chlorophyll a, nitrogen cycles, Phosphorus, BOD End DO. A Water budget analysis Using the monthly records of reservoir inflows and outflows between 1986 and 1990 was made to determine seasonally-averaged flowrates at model boundaries. Estimated flowrates were used. together with the seasonal water quality inputs simulated by the QUAL2E model, for the simulation of future water qualities. Sensitivities to the future pollutant inputs and possible future withdrawal alternatives were also analyzed. From simulations or future water qualities it is found that among the candidate withdrawal sites. the one located at the downstream end of the North Han River has the best future water quality in all quality constituents and the one at the downstream end of the South Han River has the worst Possible future withdrawal from the North Han River brings a slight increase or pollutant concentrations at existing withdrawal sites. but the aggravation of water quality is not significant.

  • To propose the improvement and management plans to strengthen the pollutant removal efficiency of dam reservoir's constructed wetlands(CWs), the operation status and configuration of CWs (including water depth, operational flow, water flow distribution, residence time, and pollutant removal efficiency, aspect ratio, open water/vegetation ratio etc.) were analyzed in 10 major wetlands constructed in dam reservoirs. The pollutant concentrations in the inflows of the studied CWs were lower than those of American and European constructed wetlands. Especially, organic matter concentrations in all of inflows were below 3 mg/L(as BOD) due to advanced treatment of sewage disposal plant and an intake of low concentration water during dry and normal seasons. The average removal efficiency of total nitrogen(TN) and total phosphorus(TP) for 10 CWs ranged from 7.6~67.6%(mean 24.9%) and -4.9~74.5%(mean 23.7%), respectively, showing high in wetlands treating municipal wastewater. On the other hand, the removal efficiency of BOD was generally low or negative with ranging from -133.3 to 41.7%. From the analysis of the operation status and configuration of CWs, it is suggested that the low removal efficiency of dam reservoir's CWs were caused by both structural (inappropriate aspect ratio, excessive open water area) and operational (neglecting water-level management, lack of facilities and operation for first flush treatment, lake of monitoring during rainy events) problems. Therefore, to enable to play a role as a reduction facility of non-point source(NPS) pollutants, an appropriate design and operation manuals for dam reservoir's CW is urgently needed. In addition, the monitoring during rainy events, when NPS runoff occur, must be included in operation manual of CW, and then the data obtained from the monitoring is considered in estimation of the pollutant removal efficiency by dam reservoir's CW.

  • Production loads of the contaminants near the Nakdong-river are, BOD : $1,006ton{\cdot}day^{-1}$, TN : $117ton{\cdot}day^{-1}$, and TP : $21ton{\cdot}day^{-1}$. Among the sources of contamination, the biggest contribution to the production load was shared by the human population, which maintains 40.7% of BOD, 44.2% of TN, and 52.5% of TP production. Similarly, among the sources of discharge load, the human population contributed 45.0% of BOD, 34.5% of TN, and 45.8% of TP. Results of flow investigation in 2001 and 2002 indicate that among the side streams, Nam-river showed the greatest average flow. In case of main stream flow, it was increased in the downstream due to the increase of the influents from the side streams. In case of BOD, COD, TOC and SS, high values were detected at Keumho-river where industrial wastewater was discharged as high level concentration. In case of the main stream, Koryoung point where direct influence of Keumho-river and Seongseo industrial complex is evident showed high BOD, COD and TOC. Oxidized nitrogen compounds and total nitrogen showed similar patterns of BOD, COD, and TOC. Especially, nitrate nitrogen was relatively high at all points. However, in case of Chlorophyll-a, relatively high values were observed at mid- and downstream areas such as Koryoung, Namjee, Soosan, Moolkeum and Hakooeun. This could be caused by the slow flow rate and the abundant nutrient salts attributed by the side streams. Relatively better water quality was observed in 2002 when the flow was relatively abundant than that in 2001. Results of investigation during 2001-2002 showed that delivery load increased as the flow reaches downstream. In 2001, delivery loads at the downstream Soosan-bridge were BOD $22,152ton{\cdot}day^{-1}$, COD $45,467ton{\cdot}day^{-1}$, TN $22,062ton{\cdot}day^{-1}$, TP $926ton{\cdot}day^{-1}$. Delivery loads in 2002 were increased due to the increase of the rainfall. They are BOD $25,876ton{\cdot}day^{-1}$, COD $64,200ton{\cdot}day^{-1}$, TN $41,101ton{\cdot}day^{-1}$, and TP $1,362ton{\cdot}day^{-1}$.

  • Diffuse pollution from an urban area contributes to the significant pollution loading to a receiving water body. In this paper, rainfall runoffs from an urban basin with combined sewer systems located in the city of Daejeon were monitored to measure the rainfall runoff discharge rates and pollutant concentrations. Strong first flush effects were observed for all monitored rainfall runoffs. The first flush effects were closely related to rainfall intensity, while suspended solids were closely related to pollutant constituents. The observed averaged Event Mean Concentrations (EMCs) of Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) were 536.1 mg SS/L, 467.7 mg CODcr/L, 142.7 mg BOD/L, 16.5 mg TN/L, and 13.5 mg TP/L. Storage volumes for containing the first flush to improve water quality of the receiving stream can be estimated based on suspended solid concentration. In this study, retainment of the first flush equivalent to 5mm of precipitation could reduce diffuse pollution loading induced by CSOs to a receiving water body by up to 80% of suspended solid loading.

  • Three purposes of this study are as follows: The first was the development of the extention method for the limited data observed in an urban drainage basin. The second was the analysis of the correlation between storm water runoff and NPS(non-point source) pollutant discharge, The last was the calculation of the monthly and annual specific NPS loads using the established correlation. the selected model was the SWMM monthly and annual specific NPs loads using the established correlation. The selected model was the SWMM (Storm Water Management model) developed by the US EPA(environmental Protection Agency). As a result of this study, the best correlation between storm wate runoff and NPS pollutants discharge was produced by the non-linear correlation between runoff rate(mm/hr)and specific loads rate(g/ha/sec)for all pollutants studied ; SS, COD, BOD, and TN. The best correlation through the analysis based on evently total mass was made by the linear correlation between the specific accumulated runoff(mm) and the specific accumulated loads(kg/ha) for CASE 1., and by the non-linear correlation for CASE 2. The NPS annual specific loads for the urban basin studied were 4933 kg/ha/year for SS, 775kg/ha/year for BOD, 3094kg/ha /year for COD,257kg/ha/year for TN, respectively. And the proportion of the NPS annual specific loads to the total annual specific loads were 42 % for SS, 13 % for BOD, 29% for COD, and 21 % for TN.

  • This aim of study was to investigate the characteristics of discharge of pollutants as well as the correlation between flow rate and water quality constituents in a combined sewer system according to the characteristics of rainfall. For the loading rates for each pollutant, the median concentrations of all pollutants except T-N was increased when a CSO took place. The loading rates of BOD, COD, SS, T-N, T-P, Cu and Zn at the CSOs were 328-1255, 25-129, 83-2009, 4-12, 14-51, 5-11 and 5-13 times higher than the DWF (Dry Whether Flow), respectively. Especially, SS loading rate was found to be highest in all pollutants. On the other hand, the range of the first flush coefficient, b for water quality constituents such as BOD, COD, SS, T-N, T-P, Cu and Zn were 0.537-0.878, 0.589-0.888, 0.516-1.062, 0.852-1.031, 0.649-0.954, 0.975-1.015 and 0.900-1.114, respectively. In term of correlation between flow rate and pollutant concentrations, SS concentration was highly correlated to flow rate. However, there was an inverse correlation between EC (Electrical Conductivity) and flow rate because of the high dilution of flow rate. In case of correlation between pollutants, there was a high correlation between SS and T-P.

  • Attention has increasingly focused on the pollutant load discharged from rural area since the enforcement of total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) in korea. As one of the methods to control the inflow of pollutant load during wet weather events, local governments are attempting to apply non-point source control facility. To design those facilities appropriately, it is essential to understand the runoff characteristics of pollutants such as TSS, $BOD_5$, $COD_{Cr}$, TP and TN. In the paper, the quantitative analyses for pollutant runoff characteristics were examined in a small rural watershed with the area of about 53 hectares. For a dry weather day and wet weather events, variation patterns of dry weather flow and runoff characteristics of wet weather flows were monitored and investigated. The runoff model using XP-SWMM reflecting the landuse types of the watershed in detail was simulated to perform the sensitivity analyses for several factors influencing on their hydrograph and pollutographs. As a result, for the case of medium and small rainfall events (i. e. total rainfall of 35.8 and 17.5 mm), the impervious area including green house, roof and road which covers relatively low portion of total area (i. e. 16%) caused substantial first flush and the majority of total runoff load. Therefore, it has been concluded that the runoff characteristics of each pollutant and distribution of impervious area should be considered for the establishment of the control strategy of non-point pollutant runoff at a rural area.
