A series of experiments were conducted to study the effectiveness of the extinction of a liquid pool fire with two different water atomizing nozzles. Fire source is small-scale circular stainless steel pan of 120mm in diameter with the fuels of hexane and ethanol. K-type thermocouples were used to measure the flame and fuel temperature along the pool centerline and under fuel surface. A digital camera was used to visualize the process of the fire suppression. The experimental results show that water mist droplet size is $115{\sim}180{\mu}m$ with nozzle A and $130{\sim}190{\mu}m$ with nozzle B. The extinguishing time of pool fire was reduced with the increase of pressure. When water droplets are small, they do not reach the flame base since they may be deflected or evaporated by the fire plume. However, influence of flow rate is more important than droplet size on fire extinction. Among the fire extinction mechanisms, drop of flame temperature is superior to suffocation of O2 concentration.
In the present study, the correlation between the Nusselt number and Reynolds number was developed for forced convection and nucleate boiling region in spray cooling. Also the effect of droplet subcooling on spray cooling heat transfer was investigated. Full cone spray nozzles were employed for spray cooling experiment, and water and FC-77 were used for developing the correlation. From the experimental results, the correlation between the Nusselt number and Reynolds number based on droplet-flow-rate was developed. The correlation shows good predictions with ${\pm}30%$ error for water and FC-77.
Natural gas hydrate typically contains 85 wt.% water and 15 wt.% natural gas, and commonly belongs to cubic structure I and II. When referred to standard conditions, 1 ㎤ solid hydrate contains up to 200㎥ of natural gas depending on pressure and temperature. Such the large volume of natural gas hydrate can be utilized to store and transport a large quantity of natural gas in a stable condition. In the present investigation, experiments were carried out for the formation of natural gas hydrate governed by pressure, temperature, gas compositions, etc. The results show that the equilibrium pressure of structure II is approximately 65% lower and the solubility is approximately 3 times higher than structure I. It is also found that for the sub-cooling of structure I and II of more than 9 and 11 K respectively, the hydrates are rapidly being formed. It is noted that utilizing nozzles for spraying water in the form of droplets into the natural gas dramatically reduces the hydrate formation time and increases its solubility at the same time.

In this paper, experiments investigating the high-temperature region heat transfer coefficients for the spray cooling of hot flat plates were performed by down spray water using flat spray nozzles. The heat transfer surface is made of copper and is 100mm in length and 40mm in width and 15mm in thickness. The experimental condition of spray are as follows: temperatures of the water droplets are T=20~$80^{\circ}C$ and droplets volume fluxes are D=0.001565~0.010438$m^3/m^2s$. Next, correlating equations for the heat transfer characteristics of spray cooling in the high temperature region are developed from the effects of droplets volume flux and the surface temperature of heat transfer plate.
The Twin-fluid Swirl Nozzles are used in many parts of the industry to produce homogeneous spray. This study is to investigate the effects of outer air swiller and inner water swiller on atomization of liquid.. The experiment was carried out with increasing air-flow rate at constant liquid-flow rate and with changing outer air swiller angle and inner water swiller angle. A Particle Dynamics Analyzer(PDA) was used to measure drop size, mean and ms values of axial velocity, number density and Sauter mean diameter(SMD). The axial mean velocity and SMD of droplets were measured along the center line and radial directions. It was found that the higher air flow-rate resulted in the smaller Sauter mean diameter of liquid spray and the higher axial mean velocity of droplets. This experimental results will be conveniently used for the preliminary design stage of twin-fluid nozzle development.
In order to reduce the trimming loss for water cooling zone next to finishing block mill in wire rolling, the operational data related to the crop length control of uncooled region was acquired and analyzed. The time deviation of water cooling spray nozzles and the immoderate preset length of uncooled wire rod result in the excessive trimming loss. Therefore, the preset length of uncooled wire rod at each cooling zone are established. The test results of #3 wire rolling mill turned out to be good enough to be expected to increase the ratio of products about 0.15% and establish operational standards of cooling zone.

Turbulent thermal mixing experiments by the injection of two parallel non-isothermal water jets have been performed. The turbulent velocities and fluctuations under the isothermal conditions have been measured using LDV system. The velocity vectors have been plotted in two dimensions from the data measured at 29$\times$16 points. The thermal mixing experiments also have been conducted, where we used 45 K-type thermocouples with a sheath diameter of 0.020" which were fixed with 5 mm distance in a line at a measured height. The measured heights were 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 cm from the upper end of rectangular nozzles. We measured the turbulent temperatures under the various flow velocity conditions with 12$^{\circ}C$$\leq$$\Delta$T $\leq$4$0^{\circ}C$. The sampling frequency and sampling time were about 420 Hz and 10 seconds, respectively. The measured results of equal velocity parallel jets were analyzed axially and radially to obtain the variation of temperature fluctuation.tion.
Purpose: Opuntia Humifusa has been used in the food and beauty industry after removing spines and glochids clearly. This study compared the methods used in removing spines and analyzed the design factors for developing a spine removal device. Method: This study compared the spine removal ratios in accordance with the length of brush, water spray pressure, the number of water spray, and the size of Opuntia Humifusa in a rotating brush device and a water spray device. In addition, this study compared the reversal ratios according to the inclination angle of a conveyor, the drop height of Opuntia Humifusa, and the speed of the conveyor to analyze the reversal factors. Results: The spines were not removed clearly in the rotating brush method, and the glochids were nailed deeply. The spine removal ratio was 96.9% with the water spray pressure of 20 $kgf/cm^2$ and the conveyor speed of 10 cm/s in the water spray method. The number of water spray was correlated with the spine removal ratio, and the average spine removal ratio was 95.6% with three cycles of water spray. The reversal ratio was 97% with the inclination angle of the conveyor $20^{\circ}$, the drop height of 380 mm, and the conveyor speed of 10 cm/s. Conclusions: In order to develop a Opuntia humifusa spine removing device, this study compared the rotating brush and water spray methods. As a result, each spine removal performance of the rotating brush and water spray methods was 96.9% and 95.6%, respectively. Although the performance of the rotating brush method was slightly higher than that of the water spray method, the water spray method was suitable for removing spines from stem because the epidermis of stem was damaged and the glochids were nail deeply in the rotating brush method. Further studies on appropriate arrangement of spray nozzles, maintaining the optimal water spray pressure, the speed and angle control of the feeding conveyor, and devices for inducing the stem to the center will be needed in combining the water spray device and the reversal device.

In case of a fire in road or railway tunnel it is always necessary to keep the escape condition as good as possible. Most of the victims of major fires in tunnels are because they couldn't leave the tunnel in time and were trapped by smoke, or rescue teams couldn't reach the place of the accident due to low visibility and high temperature. In spring 2003 a comprehensive field experiment was undertaken in a large scaled tunnel in Youngin City to test the effectiveness of a new water spray curtain system, designed to the air qualify inside of a tunnel in case of fire during passenger's escape to safe routes, In order to control the smoke propagation, fixed water sprayed nozzles were used to make water curtain system, which can be installed or hanging water piping line below ceiling. The experiment was accompanied by an extensive measurement campaign in order to measure temperature dropping effect and flow conditions as well as CO concentration for various water sprayed curtains produced by sprinkler heads or water spray nozzle. Eventually comparison analysis were undertaken to investigate the performance of water curtains under fixed water pressure. Therefore most effective water curtain system was presented on the basis of water droplet size in long tunnel.
