Experimental Study on Film Boiling of Liquid Droplets on Oxidized Copper Surface (산화 구리표면에서 액적의 막비등에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In the present study, experiments on the film boiling of liquid droplets on oxidized copper surface was conducted. The shape of pure water droplets was observed, and the evaporation rate of them was measured during the film boiling evaporation process. The droplet of initial volume 16 ~ 30 µl was applied onto the oxidized copper surface heated up to 300 ~ 500℃, then the shape of the droplet was analyzed during the film boiling evaporation. Experimental results showed that there was good correlation between dimensionless volume and dimensionless time. However, a significant difference in evaporation rate for small and large droplets discussed in previous study was not found.

Heat Transfer Enhancement Characteristics for Falling-Film Evaporation on Horizontal Enhanced Tubes with Aqueous LiBr Solution (LiBr 수용액을 이용한 수평관 유하액막 증발의 촉진관 전열향상 특성)

  • Falling-film evaporation experiments with aqueous lithium bromide (LiBr) solution were performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of enhanced copper tubes. Enhanced tubes (a knurled tube, a spirally grooved tube, and a tube coated with $20{\mu}m$ aluminum particles) and a bare tube were selected as test specimens. Averaged evaporation fluxes of water were obtained from horizontal tubes with various film Reynolds numbers, system pressures, LiBr concentrations and degrees of wall superheat. The enhanced performance of steam generation was compared between tubes with varying parameters. The knurled tube geometry showed the most excellent performance among the tubes tested. The specified enhanced tubes were more useful for generating steam on a low grade heat source such as waste heat.

  • Many papers have been published on drying shrinkage of hardened cement paste and cement mortar. The causes of drying shrinkage in cement mortar may be attributed to its mechanical properties, temperature, curing time and the evaporation of water from cement mortar. This paper deals only with drying shrinkage in cement mortar. In particular, the relationships between water evaporation and drying shrinkage are discussed.

Atmospheric Characteristics of Fog Incidents at the Nakdong River : Case Study in Gangjeong-Goryeong Weir (낙동강 유역 안개 발생시 기상 특성: 강정고령보 사례를 중심으로)

  • Visibility and Automatic Weather System(AWS) data near Nakdong river were analyzed to characterize fog formation during 2012-2013. The temperature was lower than its nearby city - Daegu, whereas the humidity was higher than the city. 157 fog events were observed in total during the 2 year period. About 65% of the events occurred in fall (September, October, and November) followed by winter, summer, and spring. 94 early morning fog events of longer than 30 minutes occurred when south westerly wind speed was lower than 2 m/s. During these events, the water temperature was highest followed by soil surface and air temperatures due to the advection of cold and humid air from nearby hill. The observed fog events were categorized using a fog-type classification algorithm, which used surface cooling, wind speed threshold, rate of change of air temperature and dew point temperature. As a result, frontal fog observed 6 times, radiation 4, advection 13, and evaporation 66. The evaporation fog in the study area lasted longer than other reports. It is due to the interactions of cold air drainage flow and warm surface in addition to the evaporation from the water surface. In particular, more than 60% of the evaporation fog events were accompanied with cold air flows over the wet and warm surface. Therefore, it is needed for the identification of the inland fog mechanism to evaluate the impacts of nearby topography and land cover as well as water body.

A Statistical Study Evaporation tn DAEGU Area (대구지방의 증발량에 대한 통계학적 연구)

  • Rainfall, evaporation, and permeability of water are the most important factors in determining the demand of water. The Daegu area has only a meteorologi observatory and there is not sufficient data for adapting the advanced method for derivation of the estimated of evaporation in the Daegu area. However, by using available data, the writer devoted his great effort in deriving the most reasonable formula applicable to the Daegu area and it is adaptable for various purposes such as industry and estimation of groundwater etc. The data used in this study was the monthly amount of evaporation of the Daegu area for the past 13 years(1960 to 1970). A year can be divided into two groups by relative degrees of evaporation in this area: the first group (less evaporation) is January, February, March, October, November, and December, and the second (more evaporation) is April, May, June, July, August, and September. The amount of evaporation of the two groups were statistically treated by the theory of probability for derivation of estimated formula of evaporation. The formula derved is believed to fully consider.   • We experimentally investigate the evaporation characteristics of water droplet on surfaces of various wettabilities in the range of contact angle from 30$^{circ}$ to 150$^{circ}$. When a liquid droplet on a solid surface evaporates, the contact angle generally decreases with time and the evaporation rate varies with the droplet geometry such as the contact angle and the radius of curvature. Experimental data on the contact angle as a function of the droplet volume obtained by digital image analysis techniques cannot be explained by the existing theories. By measuring the temporal evolutions of the droplet radius and contact angle, we find the qualitative difference between the evaporation patterns on the hydrophilic surfaces where the contact radius remains constant initially and those on the superhydrophobic surfaces where the contact angle remains constant. Also, the evaporation rate is observed to depend on the surface material although the currently available models assume that the rate is solely determined by the droplet geometry. Despite the fact that the theory to explain this dependence on the surface remains to be pursued by the future work, we give the empirical relations that can be used to predict the droplet volume evolution for each surface. It is expected that the present study will contribute to interpreting the effect of droplet geometry on the evaporation.

  • Horseradish peroxidase(HRP) in organic solvent can be reactivated by evaporation. In order to measure the evaporation effect, the enzyme solutions were obtained by evaporation and dilution of organic solvent, respectively. Although two situations were thermodynamically identical, the activity from evaporation was higher than that from dilution. From the UV absorbance and the fluorescence intensity mesurements, it can be explained that reactivation of enzyme activity might be caused by reversible folding, and the enzyme obtained by evaporation was more refolded than that obtained by dilution.

On the Surface Moisture Availability Parameters to Estimate the Surface Evaporation (증발량 추정을 위한 지표면 가용 수분 계수)

  • In order to discuss the differences among the SMP(Surface Moisture Availability Parameter), by previous researchers on the basis of their own theoretical and empirical background, we assessed the SMP according to the soil types and volumetric soil water contents. The results are as follows. There are differences among all the five SMAPs. There''s a tendency that the larger grain size, the higher value of parameters. And they divided into two groups for their value: one group has parameters with exponential function and the other with cosine and linear function. The maximum difference between the two groups appears when the volumetric soil water contents are 0.07$m^3m^{-3}$ for sand, 0.l1$m^3m^{-3}$ for loam, 0.12 for clay, and 0.13$m^3m^{-3}$ for silt loam. So, these differences must be considered when we estimate the surface evaporation rate. From field data, the paddy field soil around Junam reservoir is classified as a silt has high wetness, 0.56. So, the parameter obtained from the field measurement is much higher than that of Clapp and Hornberger(1978)''s Table. This study treated the SMP for a certain point of time in winter season. But if we measured the soil water contents continuously, we could obtain better time-dependent parameter.
