Generation of Water Droplet Ion Beam for ToF-SIMS Analysis

  • The increasing demand for two-dimensional imaging analysis using optical or electronic microscopic techniques has led to an increase in the use of simple one-dimensional and two-dimensional mass spectrometry imaging. Among these imaging methods, secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) has the best spatial resolution using a primary ion beam with a relatively insignificant beam diameter. Until recently, SIMS, which uses high-energy primary ion beams, has not been used to analyze molecules. However, owing to the development of cluster ion beams, it has been actively used to analyze various organic molecules from the surface. Researchers and commercial SIMS companies are developing cluster ion beams to analyze biological samples, including amino acids, peptides, and proteins. In this study, a water droplet ion beam for surface analysis was realized. Water droplets ions were generated via electrospraying in a vacuum without desolvation. The generated ions were accelerated at an energy of 10 keV and collided with the target sample, and secondary ion mass spectra were obtained for the generated ions using ToF-SIMS. Thus, the proposed water droplet ion-beam device showed potential applicability as a primary ion beam in SIMS.

미세수적과 레이저 평면광에 의한 와류장의 가시화 연구 (Investigation of Vortical Flow Field Visualization by Micro Water Droplet and Laser Beam Sheet)

  • 미세수적과 레이저 평면광을 사용하여 새로운 유동의 가시화 방법을 제안하였다. 미세수적은 약 5 내지 $10\mu\textrm{m}$ 크기로 가정용 초음파 가습기를 사용하여 생성시켰다. 조명은 3 W의 알곤 이온 레이저와 원통형 렌즈를 사용하여 레이저 평면광을 특정 와류장 단면에 형성시켰다. 이와 같은 새로운 유동의 가시화 방법을 측정부의 크기가 $0.9 m(W){\times}$0.9 m(H){\times}2.1 m(L)$$인 공군사관학교의 소형 풍동을 통하여 적용하였다. 가시화 결과를 통하여 미세수적을 이용한 새로운 가시화 방법이 풍동실험에 적용하기에 비교적 용이하며, 안전한 방법임을 보였다. 아울러 이 방법은 일반적으로 풍동실험에 적용되고 있는 스모크 가시화의 단점들을 보완함은 물론, 좀 더 높은 유동속도에서도 적용할 수 있었다.

The Effect of Ion-Beam Treatment on TiO2 Coatings Deposited on Polycarbonate Substrates

  • The effect of an Ar plasma treatment on polycarbonate substrates was investigated using $TiO_2$ coatings produced by reactive ion-beam assisted sputtering. The typical pressure used during sputtering was about $10^{-4}$ Torr. After the Ar plasma treatment, the contact angle of a water droplet was reduced from $88^{\circ}$ to $52^{\circ}$ and then further decreased to $12^{\circ}$ with the addition of oxygen into the chamber. The surface of the polycarbonate substrate hanged from hydrophobic to hydrophilic with these treatments and revealed its changing nano-scale roughness. The $TiO_2$ films on the treated surface showed various colors and periodic ordering dependant on the film thickness due to optical interference.
