Spray Charateristics of Water/Oil Emulsified Fuel in Pressure-Swirl Nozzle (압력선회노즐에서 물-기름 유화연료의 분무특성)

  • The beneficial aspects of applying emulsion fuels to combustion systems may be due to the changes of fuel properties which lead to the enhanced atomization characteristics. The spray characteristics of water/oil emulsified fuel injected from the pressure-swirl(simplex) atomizer using for oil burner were investigated. Four different water contents from 10 to 40 % by volume at 10% increment were prepared by mixing with the different contents of surfactants. Total amount of surfactant used was varied from 1 to 3 % by volume. This study demonstrates the influence of water and surfactant contents of emulsified fuel, injection pressure on the spray characteristics, i.e. Sauter mean diameter(SMD) and spray angle. The drop size distribution of the emulsified fuel spray was measured with a Malvem particle sizer. In order to measure the spray angle, the digital image processing was employed by capturing multiple images of the spray with 3-CCD digital video camera. It was evident that the addition of water and surfactant changes fuel properties which are the key parameters influencing the atomization of the spray. The increase in surfactant content results in the decrease of SMD and the increase in spray angle. The droplets decease with increase in injection pressure, but the influence of injection pressure in this experimental condition was less important than expected. The more viscous fuel with the increase of water content exhibits the larger droplets in the centerline of the spray, and the less viscous fuel in the outer edges of the spray. The increase in axial position from the nozzle causes the spray angle to decrease. The spray angle decreases with increase in water content. This is due to increase in viscosity with increase in water content.

  • An experimental study of twin-fluid atomization for powder metallurgy has been conducted using a specially designed atomizer in which liquid is first spread into a thin sheet and then exposed on both sides to high-velocity air. Inner air jet worked for supplying liquid and outer air jets disintegrated liquid sheet. The first result of this study were confined to the effect of atomizing quality through experiments with water. The experimental data will be extend to include the influence of atomizing air velocities on mean particle size through experiments with molten material.   • The factors to act on atomization of liquid fuel are viscosity, geometric shape of nozzle, atomizing pressure, etc. Most of high viscous liquid fuels show decrease in viscosity by raising the preheat temperature, but the viscosity of liquid fuel like CWM does not readily change with fuel temperature. As an experimental study to investigate the atomizing characteristics of CWM, CWM fuel is atomizing with a twin-fluid atomizer, and the effects of the geometric shape of spray nozzle on atomization are investigated by measuring the Sauter`s Mean Diameter (SMD) of CWM. The summarized results obtained in this study are as follows ; (1) As the ratio of the mass flows of atomizing air to that of fuel (W$_{a}$ /W$_{1}$) increases, 능 decreases when fuel temperature is constant. (2) At the ratio (t/d) 4 of thickness (t) of spray nozzle hole to the diameter (d) of the hole, there is the best atomization. And SMD decreases when t/d is between 1 to 4 and increases when t/d > 4.

Atomization Characteristics of Three Types of Swirl Injectors (세 가지 유형 와류 분사기들의 미립화 특성)

  • In this paper, the atomization characteristics of bi-swirl coaxial injectors for a 420 N-class bipropellant thruster were investigated. Three types of injectors, namely closed-type, open-type, and screw-type, were manufactured and designed to have the same spray angle and injection pressure drop. Water was used as a simulant, and cold-flow tests were conducted under ambient temperature and pressure conditions. Since the inner and outer injectors were designed to be the same type, only the inner fuel injectors that were easy to measure were used. Using a phase doppler particle analyzer, the velocity and diameter of atomized droplets were measured. Closed-type swirl injector exhibited droplet distributions with relatively high velocities and small SMD compared to the other two injectors. Open-type swirl injector formed droplets with reverse velocities in the center region and had a large recirculation zone. Screw-type swirl injector showed a sharp decrease in droplet velocity and size with radial distance from the liquid film breakup point. For the same design requirements, the closed-type swirl injector has superior atomization performance.

  • In the present study, the 2-fluid nozzle and 3-fluid nozzle to atomize the diesel and water with air for the fuel reformer of SOFC system were experimentally examined. In the 2-fluid nozzle, the diesel and water were alternately atomized due to bislug flow pattern, and it implies that the mixing of both liquids strongly affects the atomization pattern. On the other hand, in the 3-fluid nozzle, the diesel and water were atomized simultaneously due to the separated injection channels without mixing problem. Therefore, compared to the 2-fluid nozzle, the 3-fluid nozzle is suitable for the stable operation of the fuel reformer. In case of the 3-fluid nozzle, Type A where the air was supplied through the central channel was the most efficient.

  • Effects of injection conditions on a pintle injector which is proper to recent liquid rocket engines requiring low cost, low weight, high efficiency and reusability were studied. The pintle injector with a typical moving pintle was used for atmospheric experiment using water and air. Injection pressures of water were considered 0.5 and 1.0 bar, 0.1 to 1.0 bar for injection pressures of air and 0.2 to 1.0 mm for pintle opening distance. Sauter mean diameters (SMD) of spray was measured at 50 mm distance from a pintle tip and SMD was treated as a representative parameter in this study. As a result, because of shape characteristics of the pintle injector, there was a transient region between the pintle opening distances of 0.6 and 0.7 mm and this region affected to mass flow rates and SMDs. Also, Reynolds numbers for gas, Weber numbers and momentum ratios were adopted as major non-dimensional paramters and the momentum ratio has strong correlation with SMD.

  • A series of experiments were conducted to generate fine liquid(water) drops through the electrohydrodynamic atomization process. The atomization mode depended on flow rate and DC voltage input. For water, having electric conductivity larger than 10(sup)-7S/m, the spindle mode turned out to be the only mode to generate uniform-size drops within the range of 30-450 microns that have wide applications. Within this mode, both the uniformity and the fineness of drops were improved at an optimum voltage input for a given flow rate. This optimum voltage increased with increasing of the liquid flow rate. Another important parameter considered was the nozzle material with different electric conductivity and liquid wettability. A stainless-steel nozzle (the material with high electric conductivity and high liquid wettability) and a silica nozzle (the electrically non-conducting material with low liquid wettability) were tested and compared; and more uniform drops could be obtained with the silica nozzle.

  • The current trend in automotive finishing industry is to use more electrostatic rotating bell (ESRB) need space to their higher transfer efficiency. The flow physics related with the transfer efficiency is strongly influenced by operating parameters. In order to improve their high transfer efficiency without compromising the coating quality, a better understanding is necessary to the ESRB application of metallic basecoat painting for the automobile exterior. This paper presents the results from experimental investigation of the ESRB spray to apply water-borne painting. The visualization, the droplet size, and velocity measurements of the spray flow were conducted under the operating conditions such as liquid flow rate, shaping airflow rate, bell rotational speed, and electrostatic voltage setting. The optical techniques used in here were a microscopic and light sheet visualization by a copper vapor laser, and a phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system. Water was used as paint surrogate for simplicity. The results show that the bell rotating speed is the most important influencing parameter for atomization processes. Liquid flow rate and shaping airflow rate significantly influence the spray structure. Based on the microscopic visualization, the atomization process occurs in ligament breakup mode, which is one of three atomization modes in rotating atomizer. In the spray transport zone, droplets tend to distribute according to size with the larger drops on the outer periphery of spray. In addition, the results of present study provide detailed information on the paint spray structure and transfer processes.

  • An innovating technique of atomizer has been proposed to supply and to atomise molten materials. Both of a simple geometry of nozzle and an improved nozzle have been fabricated in the present study. With these nozzles, characteristics of the suction and disintegration have been empirically investigated. The important conclusions are as follows; In the case of a simple nozzle: 1) Although the sucking up and supplying of molten materials are available, the applications of powder metallurgy are limited. 2) It is concluded that the more air flow rate, $W_A$ or the shorter the height of air nozzle from the surface of supplied water, $L_h$, the more the atomizing mass of liquids, $W_L$. In the case of an improved nozzle: 3) The stable liquids can be supplied due to cut off the passage of surrounding air entrainment by air jets. 4) The atomizing mass of liquids, $W_L$ has affected not so much on the height of nozzle from the surface of supplied water, $L_h$ as that from the orifice, hc.

Macroscopic Breakup Characteristics of Water Gel Simulants with Triplet Impinging Spray Jet (젤 모사 추진제 삼중 충돌 분사 제트의 거시적 분열 특성 연구)

  • The implementation of gelled propellants systems offers high performance, energy management of liquid propulsion, storability, and high density impulse of solid propulsion. The present study focused on the macroscopic spray characteristics of liquid sheets formed by triplet impinging jets of non-Newtonian liquids which are mixed by Carbopol 941 0.5%wt. The results are compared to experiments conducted on spray images which formed by triplet impinging jets concerning with airassist effect at center orifice. When gel propellants are injected by doublet impinging jets at low pressure and high pressure, closed rim pattern shape appeared by polymeric effect from molecular force and showed inactive atomization characteristics, because of extensional viscosity related by restriction of atomization process and breakup time delay of turbulence transition. As increasing mass flow rate of the air(increasing GAR), spray breakup level is also increased.
