  • This study has been conducted to find out the location and amount of the subterrain water body developed in the alluvial stratum in Paho-Dong, Sungsee-Myo-n, Dalsung-Kun are. An earlier test drilling was done in this area by R.O.K. Agricultural Promotion Corporation. The area consists of a small river basin and surrounding low hills developed around the junction of the Nakdong and Kumho Rivers. The strata of this area are made of Paldal gravel, Bokhyundong and Banyawol layers which were formed in the cretaceous period of the Meso-saicera or acid dikes and covered with-irregular alluvial layers. The alluvial layer in this area is composed of rather minute particles and proportional electric resistance tests on this layer show $10^2\;-\;10^3\;\Omega/cm$. The drillings up to 12meters deep showed only the sand layer (Form 3 to 26meters in thickness) contains water. The sand layers can not be considered a good water trapping one. Applying the data from the drillings to A.Hazen's equation, $K\;=\;{cd_e}^2\;(0.7\;+0.03t)$ to get the theoretical value of the water infilterated, I calculated it as K=13.92m/day. And again the value was set to Dupuit equation, (equation omitted) to acquire the pumping water amount the result was $Q_1\;=\;77.20\;\textrm{m}^3/day$. When the data-applied to the equation for pumping water amount, (equation omitted), the results were $Q_2\;=\;122.39\;\textrm{m}^3/day$ and K = 38m/day $Q_1\;and;Q_2$ (tow types of pumping water amount) represent proper value decrease and maximum value decrease respectively. Therefore, $Q_2$ is the least amount of water we can pump. The area covers about $1,555,000\;\textrm{m}^2$ and the maximum water needed in this area amounts to $155,000\textrm{m}^3$. That means we have to drill 1,406 pumping wells. It is concluded that undertaking the project in this area is irrational or even desperate and surface water should be developed more favorably.

  • Soil erosion by rainfall is important factor for basin management because it reduces reservoir capacity and breaks out the contamination of water caused by turbid water. Recently, soil erosion study with GIS is in progress but does not consider soil erosion source area. This study calculated soil erosion amount using GIS-based soil erosion model in Imha basin and examined soil erosion source area using SPOT 5 High-resolution satellite image and land cover map. As a result of analysis, dry field showed high-density soil erosion area and we could easily investigate source area using satellite image. Also we could examine the suitability of soil erosion area by applying field survey method in common areas such as dry field and orchard area those are difficult to confirm soil erosion source area using satellite image.

  • The use of land cover was sharply changed during 1975~2007 in the Kyungan watershed $(561.12 km^2)$. The changes occurred over an area of more than $227.65 km^2$ during the overall period at changing rates of 1.04% per year for water area, 1.79% per year for residential area, 2.99% per year for bare area, 3.03% per year for wetland area, 3.04% per year for grass area, 0.87% per year for forest and 2.32% per year for agriculture area. Water, residential, bare and wetland areas increased, while grass, forest and agriculture areas decreased during the last 32 years. BOD concentrations of representative sites for each sub-watershed continuously increased until the early 2000s as residential area increased with the highest discharged load, but decreased after the mid 2000s except upper Kyungan watershed. Such decline appears to be associated with the planning of Total Maximum Daily Load management for Gwangju city and expansion of waste water treatment plant. It is necessary to control land use/cover changes of the upper watershed and to prepare appropriate watershed management system for improvement in river environment including water quality, stream flow and bio-diversity.

  • Uiryung Watershed area, located at the confluence of Nam River and Nagdong River has 9000 ha of agricultural land area and 3024 ha of paddy rice field have been reclaimed and managed by Korean Agricultural and Rural Infrastructure Corporation(KARICO) in the riparian area since 1954. In spite of irrigation and drainage improvement projects in last 3 decades since 1970, there are severe drought and innundation problems in the area. To improve the difficulties and efficient usage of irrigation water not only for agriculture but also for environmental conservation and cultural ceremony, Automatic Water management system has been installed supported by Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery in Korean Government. The control office in Uiryung Branch Office of KARICO, receive all the water management records from Remote Terminal Units in 7 reservoirs and 26 Pump stations to operate the decision supporting system of irrigation and drainage facility during cropping period. Since the completion of the water management system at the end of 2003, the electric cost decrease in 80 % than average years. In spite of decrease of two technical assistants since 2004, complains from farmers for the water management are very rare. The technological experience from the automatic water management system would contribute not only for the efficient water management of Uiryang area but also for the modernization of water management of other watershed areas in the future.

  • To investigate the status of irrigation water use and the degree of repeated use of irrigation water, observations for water balance analysis were made during the irrigation periods in 1986 and 1987 crop year. The total area of studied site is 1,441 ha. The site is a major portion of Jedaecheon basin which is located in Bubuk-myeon, Miryang-gun, Gyeongnam Province. The studied area was subdivided into six small blocks. The water balance analysis for these subdivided blocks were carried out considering characteristics of each block. Obtained results are as follow: 1.In mountainous sloppy paddy area(less than 7% slope), the surface inflow was 5A mm/day in average that is one third of the surface inflow into plain paddy area ; 16.7 mm/day. 2.The surface inflows at the vegetative stage and the ripening stage were 15.5 mm/day and 10.4 mm/day, respectively. Those figures were larger than the actual consumptive use at respective same stages ; 13.3 mm/day and 9.2 mm/day, respectively. Whereas, the surface inflow at generative stage was 12.5 mm/day which was less than 14.0 mm/day ; the actual consumptive use. 3.The range of the variation of water storage term was 1 mm/day. This means that there were no change in depth of ponded water on paddy fields. The relationship between the variation of water storage(AS) and the variation of ground water table(H) could be expressed as follow: : AS=0.14H+0.26 4.The ground water inflow: into the transition region ; paddy fields which are located continuously from the mountainous area to the plain area, was larger than the out flow from this region, in general. Rowever, in the plain region where the ground water utilization was predominant, the ground water outflow from this region was larger than inflow: to this region. The relationship between the ground water flow(G2- G1) and the consumptive use in large paddy area(D1-D2) could be expressed as follow: (G2-G1) =0.95(D1-D2) -3.79

  • The persent paper discusses the relation between water pollution and aquatic organisms resulted from the study of the water quality and the kinds of algea and aquatic insects both of the An-yang River from Mt. Kwan-ak to the Han River and of the Kock-neung River from Mt. Puk-han to the Han River during the spring of 1965 and 1966. According to the change of water quality, the An-yang River might be divided into three areas. In the first area, from Mt. Kwan-ak to near An-yang town, water quality is not so polluted that may aquatic organisms such as Anisogamarus ryotoensis, Epeorus, Cambaroides, Zygnem, Batrachospermum moniliform, Draparnaldia glomerata are found. In the second area where water is polluted by the inflow of sewerage water from An-yang town, the concentration of chloride, COD, ammonia-N, nitrate-N, alkali degree increased. Therefore, few aquatic insects and algea are found. In the third area, it is much polluted by the industrial sewerage water frojm Yeong-dong-po; and so the aquatic organisms that indicate strong pollution such as Oscillatoria, Euglena, Tubifex are found in this area. It is also significant that the Nereis japonica that indicates the pollution of brackish water is discorved in the some area. In the case of the Kock-neung River, however, it is not clearly divided into areas, as in the case of the An-yang Riber, according to the pollution of water; but because of villages and towns along the river the gradual pollution of water; but because of villages and towns along the river the gradual pollution of water is observed and accordingly, a considerable change in aquatic organisms is also found in this river. In the area near II-yeung town, for instance, the concentration of the chloride, hardness, nitrite, nitrate is very low, and ammonia-N is not detected; and accordingly the aquatic insects that generally inhabit in mountain stream, such as Anisogamarus ryotoensis, Cambaroides, Epeorus, Thraubs, Hydropsyche are found here. In the down stream of the river, from Kock-chon, the quality of water is considerably polluted and fine sands are found laid on the bottom of the stream; therefore, the aquatic insects are very few, but the algea such as Navicula, Pleusigma, Oscillatoria that indicate water pollution are found in this area.

  • This study aimed to estimate the impervious area rate by rural water districts in 2009 and 2021 and analyze the changes. From the EGIS(Environmental Geographic Information Service) land cover maps, the impervious areas were defined as residential, commercial, industrial, culture·sports·recreational, traffic, public facilities, and greenhouses of land cover classes. For 496 rural water districts excluding the border area with North Korea, the nationwide impervious area rate increased from 5.96% in 2009 to 7.50% in 2021. The average of the top 50 rural water districts increased from 23.4% in 2009 to 27.1% in 2021. E ven for the bottom 50 rural water districts, the average impervious area rate rose from 1.12% in 2009 to 1.40% in 2021. Rural water districts with a high impervious area rate are mainly distributed in metro cities and industrial areas. The contraries are primarily found in Gangwon, Gyeongsang, and Jeolla regions covered with forests and farmlands. Notably, the impervious area rate changed more in the neighboring rural water districts than in large cities, and the rate kept increasing slightly even in rural areas with a low impervious area rate. The findings of this study will help prepare a reasonable alternative for managing the impermeable surface of rural areas for safe and sound rural water cycle.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate the load of pollutants caused from the forest area among non-point pollutants within the Juam lake. The surveyed forest area was classified into broad-leaved, conifer, mixed and herbage area by forest tree type. Water quality and flux were investigated under rainfall and non-rainfall, respectively. Then, pollutant loading was evaluated by using the values of unit pollutant loading factor of each point and area of forest zone. Water quality analysis results of runoff by forest tree types were as follows. - Annual BOD, $COD_{Mn}\;and\;COD_{Cr}$ concentration of runoff in conifer area was high, and particle and biological recalcitrant compounds were flowed highly. - SS, T-N and T-P concentration was high in runoff from broad-leaved area, and biological degradable compounds was flowed. - Water quality of water from valley was maintained good under non-rainfall and could be utilized as fresh drinking water. Through water quality standard investigation, a countermeasure establishment was necessary to secure a good quality of drinking water - BOD, $COD_{Mn},\;and\;COD_{Cr}$ concentration of Bo-sung river was higher 1.5 times than other 2 streams, and because of high T-N, and T-P concentration in Songgwang stream, the management for this was necessary.
