The effects of operational conditions of cooling water system on energy consumption for central cooling system are researched by using TRNSYS program. Cooling tower water pump flow rate, cooling tower fan flow rate, and condenser water temperature with various dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures are varied and their effects on total and component power consumption are studied. If the fan maximum flow rates of cooling tower is decreased, cooling tower fan and total power consumptions are increased. If the cooling tower water pump maximum flow rates is decreased, chiller and total power consumptions are increased. If condenser water set-point temperature is increased, chiller power consumption is increased and cooling tower fan power consumption is decreased, respectively.
Dynamic test with scaled model of a group of intake towers was performed to study the dynamic interaction between water and towers. The test model consists of intake tower or towers, massless foundation near the towers and part of water to simulate the dynamic interaction of tower-water-foundation system. Models with a single tower and 4 towers were tested to find the different influences of the water on the tower dynamic properties, seismic responses as well as dynamic water-tower interaction. It is found that the water has little influence on the resonant frequency in the direction perpendicular to flow due to the normal force transfer role of the water in the contraction joints between towers. By the same effect of the water, maximum accelerations in the same direction on 4 towers tend to close to each other as the water level increased from low to normal level. Moreover, the acceleration responses of the single tower model are larger than the group of towers model in both directions in general. Within 30m from the surface of water, hydrodynamic pressures were quite close for a single tower and group of towers model at two water levels. For points deeper than 30m, the pressures increased about 40 to 55% for the group of towers model than the single tower model at both water levels. In respect to the pressures at different towers, two mid towers experienced higher than two side towers, the deeper, the larger the difference. And the inside hydrodynamic pressures are more dependent on ground motions than the outside.
The effect of hydrodynamic damping on intake tower is twofold: one is fluid damping and another is structural damping. Fluid damping can be derived analytically from the governing equation of the fluid-structure-interaction (FSI) problem which yields a very complicated solution. To avoid the complexity of the FSI problem water-tower system can be simplified by considering water as added mass. However, in such a system a reconsideration of structural damping is required. This study investigates the effects of this damping on the dynamic response of the intake tower, where, apart from the "no water (NW)" condition, six other cases have been adopted depending on water height. Two different cross-sections of the tower are considered and also two different damping properties have been used for each case as well. Dynamic analysis has been carried out using horizontal ground motion as input. Finally, the result shows how hydrodynamic damping affects the dynamic behavior of an intake tower with the change of water height and cross-section. This research will help a designer to consider more conservative damping properties of intake tower which might vary depending on the shape of the tower and height of water.
Shallow water withdrawal systems have been replaced with a selected withdrawal system to keep stable raw water quality in spite of occurrence of algae and muddy inflow. Before reconstruction of the water intake tower in Yongdam reservoir supplying water to Gosan water treatment facility, we have predicted flow patterns of inflowing water into the water intake tower for various withdrawal conditions. It has been predicted that the water in the withdrawal layer is significantly inflowed from the front with fast velocity into the water intake tower irrespective of withdrawal depth, while the water away from the withdrawal layer is withdrawed a little from the side with slow velocity.
The experiment of thermal performance about closed-wet cooling tower was conducted in this study. A closed cooling tower is a device similar to a general cooling tower, but with cooling tower replaced by a heat exchanger. The test section for this experiment has the process that the cooling water flows from the top of the heat exchanger to the bottom side in the inner part of the tube, and spray water flows in the gravitational direction in the outer side. Air comes in direct contact with the spray water at the outer side of the tube while passing from the lower the upper part having a counterflow to the spray water. The heat transfer pipe used in this experiment is a bare-type tube having an outer diameter of 15.88mm. The heat exchanger is consisted of seven rows and fifteen columns. In this experiment, thermal performance of the cooling tower is derived from overall heat transfer coefficients between the process fluid and sprayed water and volumetric overall mass transfer coefficient between sprayed water and air.
The heat produced by the fission in the fuel of HANARO, 30 MW research reactor, is transferred from the primary cooling water to the secondary cooling water through heat exchangers, and the heat absorbed by the secondary cooling water is released into the atmosphere by the 33 MW cooling tower which is a mechanical induced draft and counter flow type. If the outlet temperature of cooling tower exceeds 33 of due to the loss of the cooling tower performance under reactor operation above $50\%$ of the full power, the reactor power should be reduced to half of the full power for safe operation. Therefore, the cooling capability of cooling tower should be maintained for the reactor to be normally operated. To predict the capability of cooling tower for full power reactor operation of 30 MW, the performance test of cooling tower was done at the reactor present power of 24 MW and the capability was respectively evaluated by characteristics and performance curves methods in accordance with the Code of Cooling Tower Institute of U.S.A. to confirm the reliability of evaluation. As a result, it was confirmed, through the results of each evaluation, that the cooling capability of cooling tower meets the design required heat load. Also, the equations of the performance and the characteristics curves of the cooling tower, based on the collected data during this performance test, was obtained for developing the calculation program to predict the cooling capability during reactor operation.
The operational conditions such as cooling tower water pump flow rate, cooling tower fan flow rate, and chiller capacity in heat source equipment, and supply air temperature and chilled water temperature in air conditioner are considered to study the effects on energy consumption for central cooling system by using TRNSYS program. As a result, the optimal values of supply air temperature and chilled water temperature for minimal total energy consumption are 12℃ and 8℃. And if maximum values of cooling tower water pump and fan flow rate is decreased from 100% to 40%, energy consumptions are increased 170MJ/day and 63.2MJ/day, respectively.
The intake tower of D-dam located in a mountainous area positioned in the left side of the dam and its structure installed alone on the water surface then, can become target of direct lightening. To protect the intake tower from the direct lightening and indirect-lightening, lightening rod installed in the top area of the intake tower and ground pole laid under the surrounding ground. however, because the surrounding ground almost consists of a rock, it is very difficult to obtain the grounding resistance. It is main object to examine the construction plan of the optimum lightening rod equipment and ground pole with measuring the earth specific resistance of the around of the intake tower which is the scheduled area to lay the ground pole with the Wenner's 4-electric pole method and the Schlumberger's method. and using the analysis tool, ESII.
Seoul Metro has operated the air cooling equipment established in a machine room of a station building to improve our services focused on our customers who use Seoul Metro during the summer season. However, a new set of problems has arisen with the cooling tower to support a heat exchange of cooling water. One of them is loss of efficiency in the air conditioner. The leading cause of this problem is that we use an underground type of the cooling tower. As the machine room of a station building is located in the underground of inner city because of the nature of the subway, it is difficult to establish the cooling tower on the ground. The underground structure of the No. $1{\sim}4$ subway line is unsuitable for the location requirements of the underground type of the one because it has a limited space to set up the air cooling equipment, for example, the cooling tower and a ventilating opening. As a result of such an unfavorable condition, the cooling tower doesn't work efficiently and the warmth of cooling water because of insufficiency of a heat exchange and a refrigerator's technical obstacle such as a high-temperature and a high-pressure has arisen. Accordingly, the efficiency of the air conditioning is getting lower and lower. Another problem is too wasteful with water. Each station uses the water over 30 tons every day with waterworks to replenish the cooling tower such as a evaporation, a scattering and a distribution of water. Nevertheless, the more an air conditioner increase, the more the use of water supply increase. For this reason, we can't help wasting an enormous amount of water and discharging the congelation of a low temperature(about $15^{\circ}C$) occurred in a heat exchanger inside an air conditioner. The purpose of this study is to analyze the utility of congealing water to improve efficiency of the air cooling equipment and save energy as a supplementary water for the cooling tower.
The Industrial Revolution brought a variety of new forms of structure, and as a group they are usually called 'industrial architecture'. Steam engines contributed greatly to architecture with a unique structure called 'water tower' to provide water for steam engines, especially the adoption of it. This study is to examine the changes of the building materials and architectural features of the water towers of railway stations built in the early twentieth century in South Korea. This study also attempts to describe the modern features of the industrial architecture, which did not get a chance to be noticed. Through this examination on water tower, which is a part of industrial architecture with sheer integration of function and pure geometric form, we would like to find the meaning of modern architecture in Korea. As we can see in the Korean oldest railway station water tower constructed in masonry at Yeonsan Station in 1911, early water towers were divided into the masonry machine room and the steel water tank. However, the masonry structure was soon turned into concrete structure with its formal features maintained as it was. The steel water tank was also replaced with concrete structure. As a result, while its basic structure remained, concrete structure had substituted for the every components of water tower. Concrete-built water towers were the high-tech architecture of that time and the most perfect structures built in concrete. Nevertheless, the perfection of the water tower form and the technology it attained were not transferred to other modern and contemporary architecture in South Korea. Since the subject to railway station water towers was the Japanese government, and steam engines were replaced with diesels in the midst of a complicated domestic situation after the independence, the need for water towers in railway stations disappeared and therefore, it became ignored and was difficult to look over the architectural features and values of early railway station water towers.
