The uncertainty in water quality model predictions is inevitably high due to natural stochasticity, model uncertainty, and parameter uncertainty. An integrated modeling system under uncertainty was described and demonstrated for use in watershed management and receiving-water quality prediction. A watershed model (HSPF), a receiving water quality model (WASP), and a wetland model (NPS-WET) were incorporated into an integrated modeling system (modified-BASINS) and applied to the Hwaseong Reservoir watershed. Reservoir water quality was predicted using the calibrated integrated modeling system, and the deterministic integrated modeling output was useful for estimating mean water quality given future watershed conditions and assessing the spatial distribution of pollutant loads. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to investigate the effect of various uncertainties on output prediction. Without pollution control measures in the watershed, the concentrations of total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorous (T-P) in the Hwaseong Reservoir, considering uncertainty, would be less than about 4.8 and 0.26 mg 4.8 and 0.26 mg $L^{-1}$, respectively, with 95% confidence. The effects of two watershed management practices, a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and a constructed wetland (WETLAND), were evaluated. The combined scenario (WWTP + WETLAND) was the most effective at improving reservoir water quality, bringing concentrations of T-N and T-P in the Hwaseong Reservoir to less than 3.54 and 0.15 mg ${L^{-1}$, 26.7 and 42.9% improvements, respectively, with 95% confidence. Overall, the Monte Carlo simulation in the integrated modeling system was practical for estimating uncertainty and reliable in water quality prediction. The approach described here may allow decisions to be made based on probability and level of risk, and its application is recommended.
This study focused on the causes of fish kills and its prevention methods in Yudeung Stream, Daejeon, Korea. Intense field data, continuous water quality monitoring system and water quality modeling were applied to analyze the causes. Pollutant can be delivered to urban streams by surface runoff and combined sewer overflows in rainfall events. However, water quality analysis and water quality modeling results indicate that the abrupt fish kills in the Yudeung stream seems to be caused by combined effect of DO depletion, increase in turbidity and other toxic material. Excessive fish population in the study area may harm the aesthetic value of the stream and also has greater potential for massive fish kills. It is suggested to implement methods to reduce delivery of pollutants to the stream not only to prevent fish kills but also to keep balance of ecosystem including human uses. Frequent clean up of the urban surface and CSO, installation of detention basin will be helpful. In the long run, it seems combined sewer system has be replaced with separate sewer system for more effective pollutant removal in the urban area.
Han River is a complex water system consisting of many lakes. The water quality of Lake Paldang is significantly affected by incoming flows, which are the South and North branches of the Han River, and the Kyungan Stream. In order to manage the water quality of the Lake Paldang, we should consider the entire water body where the incoming flows are included. The objectives of this study are to develop an integrated river and lake modeling system for Han River system using a multidimensional dynamic model and evaluate the model's performance against field measurement data. The integrated model was calibrated and verified using field measurement data obtained in 2007 and 2008. The model showed satisfactory performance in predicting temporal variations of water level, flow rate and temperature. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for water temperature simulation were $0.88{\sim}2.13^{\circ}C$ (calibration period) and $1.05{\sim}2.00^{\circ}C$ (verification period) respectively. And Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) for water temperature simulation were 1089~0.98 (calibration period) and 0.90~0.98 (verification period). Utilizing the validated model, we analyzed the spatial and temporal distributions of temperature within Han River system. The variations of temperature along the river reaches and vertical thermal profiles for each lakes were effectively simulated with developed model. The suggested modeling system can be effectively used for integrated water quality management of water system consisting of many rivers and lakes.

Most of our rivers are fragmented by the presence of at least one large dam. Dams are often the most substantial controller of the flow regimes and aquatic environments of natural river system. The quality of downstream water released from a stratified reservoir is highly dependent on upstream reservoir water quality. Thus, an integrated modeling approach is more efficient, compared to fragmented modeling approach, and necessary to better interpret the impact of dam operation on the down stream water quality. The objectives of this study were to develop an integrated reservoir-river modeling system for Daecheong Reservoir and its downstream using a two-dimensional laterally averaged hydrodynamic and water quality model, and evaluate the model's performance against field measurement data. The integrated model was calibrated and verified using filed data obtained in 2004 and 2006. The model showed satisfactory performance in predicting temporal variations of water stage, temperature, and suspended solid concentration. In addition, the reservoir-river model showed efficient computation time as it took only 3 hours for one year simulation using personal computer (1.88 Ghz, 1.00 GB RAM). The suggested modeling system can be effectively used for assisting integrated management of reservoir and river water quality.

Among water quality models, WASP5 was applied to Boryeong freshwater lake, as a part of Water Quality Management System. The WASP modeling system is a generalized modeling framework for contaminant fate and transport in surface waters. The simulated result was compaired with actual measurement. So, before and after making freshwater lake were compaired. After this research, the lake may have eutrophication and water quality would be worse after making the lake as freshwater lake. Therefore, to make the freshwater lake better, more appropriate plan is necessary.
This study aims to test the feasibility of combined use of EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) hydrodynamic model and WASP7.3 (Water Quality Analysis Program) model to improve accuracy of water quality predictions of the Yongdam Lake, Korea. The orthogonal curvilinear grid system was used for EFDC model to represent riverine shape of the study area. Relationship between volume, surface and elevation results were checked to verify if the grid system represents morphology of the lake properly. Monthly average boundary water quality conditions were estimated using the monthly monitored water quality data from Korean Ministry of Environment DB system. Monthly tributary flow rates were back-routed using dam discharge data and allocated in proportion to each basin area as direct measurements were not available. The optimum number of grid system was determined to be 372 horizontal cells and 10 vertical layers of the site for 1 year simulation of hydrodynamics and water quality out of iterative trials. Monthly observed BOD, TN, TP and Chl-a concentrations inside the lake were used for calibration of WASP7.3 model. This study shows that EFDC and WASP can be used in series successfully to improve accuracy in water quality modeling. However, it was observed that the amount of data to develop inflow water quality and flow rate boundary conditions and water quality data inside lake for calibration were not enough for accurate modeling. It is suggested that object-oriented data collection systems would be necessary to ensure accuracy of EFDC-WASP model application and thus for efficient lake water quality management strategy development.

The current industrial development and the Increase of population along Nakdong River have produced a rapid Increase of wastewater discharge. This has resulted in problem of water quality control and management. Although many efforts have been carried out, water quality has not significantly improved. The goal of this study is to design a NGIS-based water quality management system for the scientific water quality control and management in the Nakdong River. For general water quality analysis, QULA2E model was applied to the Nakdong River. A sensitivity analysis was made to determine significant parameters and an optimization was made to estimate optimal values. The calibration and verification were performed by using observed water quality data for Nakdong River. A water qualify management system for Nakdong River was made by connecting the QUAL2E model to ArcView. It allows a Windows-based Graphic User Interface(GUI) to implement all operation with regard to water quality analysis. The modeling system in this study will be an efficient NGIS for planning of water quality management.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality(TCEQ) WAM(Water Availability Modeling) System consists of the generalized Water Rights Analysis Package(WRAP) river/reservoir system water management simulation model, 22 sets of WRAP hydrology and water rights input files for the 23 river basins of Texas, geographic information system tools, and other supporting databases. The WRAP/WAM modeling system, as routinely applied since the late 1990s, has not included consideration of water quality. Recently developed WRAP-SALT(Water Rights Analysis Package) is designed primarily for computing concentration frequency statistics and supply reliability indices at locations of interest in a river system for alternative water development and management scenarios. Though motivated primarily by natural salt pollution, WRAP-SALT water quality modeling features are applicable to essentially any conservative water quality constituent. The Brazos River studies discussed in this paper focus on total dissolved solids, though the available observed data also includes chloride and sulfate which can be modeled as individual constituents. The WRAP-SALT salinity input file contains loads or concentrations of salinity inflows during each month of the hydrologic period-of-analysis and reservoir storage at the beginning of the simulation. The WRAP-SALT model computes salt loads and concentrations for each control point of a river/reservoir system for inflows and outflows during the month and end-of-month reservoir storage for each month of the hydrologic period-of-analysis, for given loads entering the system. River reaches connect control points. The mass balance algorithms proceed from upstream to downstream, with outflow from one river reach contributing to inflow to the next downstream reach. In a given month, for each control point in sequence, the inflow loads are first computed. Loads and concentrations of outflows and reservoir storage at the control point are then determined. Complete mixing during the month is assumed at locations without reservoir storage.

The objectives of this study were to develop a linked watershed-waterbody modeling system and to assess the impacts of indirect wastewater reuse on irrigation water quality. The Osan stream watershed within Gyeonggi-do of South Korea was selected for this study. The linked modeling system was composed of the SWAT (Soil and water assessment tool) and QUALKO2 models. The SWAT model was calibrated and validated using the stream discharge and water quality data from 2010 to 2011. Runoff and non-point source pollutants from each subbasin and stream discharge from 1980 to 2009 were simulated by the SWAT model and applied to the QUALKO2 model. The QUALKO2 model was calibrated and validated under the conditions of low water and normal discharges, respectively. Finally, The 10-day irrigation water quality from April to September was simulated. The statistical measures of coefficient of determination ($R^2$), reliability index (RI), and efficiency index (EI) were used to evaluate the system performance. The $R^2$, RI and EI values ranged from 0.5 to 1.0, 1.03 to 1.92, and -35.03 to 0.95, respectively. The 10-day irrigation water quality showed the concentrations of BOD and coliform exceeded the water quality guidelines for wastewater reuse. The linked modeling system can be a useful tool to estimate non-point source pollutant loads in watershed and to control the water quality of effluent from a wastewater treatment plant and irrigation water in the downstream waterbody.

Multidimensional dynamic water quality model of organic matter and trophic state was applied to the Han River system. The model was calibrated using field measurement data obtained during the year of 2007. The model results showed reasonable performance in predicting temporal variations of TN, TP, Chl-a and BOD concentrations. The applied integrated modeling system can be effectively used to simulate water quality as well as hydrodynamic and water temperature for river-lake continuous system in the Han River. Utilizing the calibrated model, we analyzed the spatial and temporal distributions of TN, TP, Chl-a and BOD concentrations in the Han River system. The temporal variations of water quality at each river reach and lake were effectively simulated with the developed model and spatial distribution of water qualities in the Han River system could be compared. The multidimensional dynamic modeling system can simulate the water qualities of entire waterbody where Lake Paldang and the incoming flows are included using single modeling system. So it can be effectively used for integrated water quality management of the Han River system.
