Soil loss is a serious problem frequently caused by local torrential rainfalls due to climate change. In particular, soil loss is occurring in agricultural areas rather than urban areas, and many pollutants are introduced into rivers, causing environmental problems. To reduce soil loss, the Ministry of Environment has designated and managed non-point source management areas. The Jaun-district in Hongcheon-gun, which was designed as a non-point pollution source management area in Gangwon-do, is located in the upper stream of Soyang Lake. Most of the agricultural fields are composed of highland agriculture fields. The highland agricultural fields in the Jaun-district are also composed of large-scale farming areas, and the ditches located near the agricultural fields have been illegally used for farmland. Therefore, the local government in Hongcheon-gun is conducting a project to restore the ditches occupied by agricultural fields. However, an analysis of the amount of soil loss that can be reduced by the restoration of the ditches has not been conducted yet. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of reducing the soil loss from the restoration of the ditches used as agricultural fields in the Jaun-district. The SATEEC L Module was used to analyze the reduction in soil loss by ditch restoration. The SATEEC L Module was constructed to estimate the LS factor using Moore and Burch's method after calculating the slope length using the digital elevation model and the maximum allowable slope length. The LS factor and the USLE formula were used to estimate the amount of soil loss that could be reduced by ditch restoration. The analysis showed that the ditch restoration could reduce about 16.6% of the soil loss in the Jaun-district. The results of this study will contribute to the study of methods to reduce soil loss in non-point pollution management areas.

Large scale flood disasters bring human losses and properties, which lead to the decrease of our productive value and change social environment. Human loss and economic damage are considered to be the same system but they are viewed as separated systems. The total amount of human loss can be represented as the total amount of economic damage estimated in the frame of social system while it will be possible to make mutual changing by clearing the relations between social and economic systems. In this regard, an attempt to estimate economic loss considering per capita Gross Domestic Production (GDP) caused by flood-related mortality was carried out to the typhoon Rusa of 2002 in Kangwon-do. The proposed method tried to capture quantitative factors which are affecting the loss of per capita GDP. The approach has great importance not only to set up governmental policy but also methodological progress in the research due to impact of disaster-related mortality on GDP loss.

Recently International Water Association(IWA) has proposed new performance indicators for water supply services and their successful applications are being reported continually. According to the various reports, the percentage indicators were suggested not to be used for performance comparison, especially where the targeted areas have great difference in consumption per service connection. But unfortunately in Korea the revenue water ratio, one of the percentage indicators is still being used to set up the goal of water-related administration and to compare the performances between systems. Therefore this study aimed to prove the inapplicability of the percentage indicators with nation-wide data and to suggest better performance indicators for more efficient water loss management. According to the result of the comparison of various performance indicators with conventional one, it is roved that percentage indicators ca not evaluate the performance efficiently where the local situations are significantly different. It is suggested that the better performance indicators such as real losses per service connection or ILI should be used to benchmark the performances of water suppliers on water loss management so thai the problems of water losses could be identified easily and recovered effectively.
Automotive wheel bearing grease helps to reduce stresses and prevent wear of wheel bearings. But it is easily contaminated by water and other contaminants. In this study, we investigated the property change of automotive wheel bearing grease under water contamination. The result showed that some properties such as dropping point, work penetration and oxidation stability were not influenced by water content. However, most of properties such as work stability, water washout characteristics, leakage tendency, oil separation, evaporation loss and rust protection became worse after water was added. This is thought that added water makes the interaction weak between thickener and base oil of grease.
Organizations can experience serious financial and/or reputational losses if business activities are disrupted by an incident of information systems under the current business environment. The loss includes the intangible decline in brand image, customer separation, and the tangible loss such as decrease in business profits. Thus, it is necessary to take proactive initiatives by managing many kinds of risks an organization may have. Therefore, the enterprise risk management has been received a special attention by some advanced private companies, but not many public organizations. This paper describes an approach and some issues when the enterprise risk management was introduced in a domestic public organization.

Most distributed water is not used effectively due to water loss occurring in pipe networks. These water losses are caused by leakage, typically due to high water pressure to ensure adequate water supply. High water pressure can cause the pipe to burst or develop leaks over time, particularly in an aging network. In order to reduce the amount of leakage and ensure proper water distribution, it is important to apply pressure management. Pressure management aims to maintain a steady and uniform pressure level throughout the network, which can be achieved through various operational schemes. The schemes include: (1) installing a variable speed pump (VSP), (2) introducing district metered area (DMA), and (3) operating pressure-reducing valves (PRV). Applying these approaches requires consideration of various hydraulic, economic, and environmental aspects. Due to the different functions of these approaches and related components, an all-together optimization of these schemes is a complicated task. In order to reduce the optimization complexity, this study recommends a sequential optimization method. With three network operation schemes considered (i.e., VSP, DMA, and PRV), the method explores all the possible combinations of pressure management paths. Through sequential optimization, the best pressure management path can be determined using a multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) to weigh in factors of cost savings, investment, pressure uniformity, and CO2 emissions. Additionally, the contribution of each scheme to pressure management was also described in the application results.
BACKGROUND: An intensive farming system may be of the most important source for agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution, which is a major concern for agricultural water management in South Korea. Various management practices have therefore been applied to reduce NPS loads from upland fields. This study presents performances of sediment trap for reducing NPS and soil loss from rainfall runoff in cropland. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 2018 and 2019, three sediment traps (L1.5 m × W1.0 m × D0.5 m = 0.75 ㎥) and their controls were established in the end of sloped (ca. 3%) upland field planted with maize crops. Over the seasons, runoff water was monitored, collected, and analyzed at every runoff. Soils deposited in sediment traps were collected and weighed at the season end. Sediment traps reduced runoff amount (p<0.05) and NPS concentrations, though the decreased NPS concentrations were not always statistically significant. In addition, sediment traps had a significant prevention effect on soil loss from rainfall runoff in a sloped cropland. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the sediment trap could be a powerful and the best management practice to reduce NPS pollution and soil loss in a sloped upland field.

The 2006 Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) defines ecosystem services (ES) as "the benefits people obtain from ecosystems". Identifying where ES originates, whom it benefits and how it is changing over a period of time is critical in rapidly developing country like Nepal, where the risk of ES loss is high. In the context of various ecosystem services provided by watershed, this study, particularly deals with water yield, Soil loss and Carbon sequestration computation and evaluation in Bagmati Basin of Nepal. As Bagmati Basin incorporates capital city Kathmandu of nepal, land use change is significant over decades and mapping of ES is crucial for sustainable development of Basin in future. In this regard, the objectives of this study are 1) To compute the total and sub-watershed scale water yield of the basin, 2) Computation of soil loss and sediment retention in the basin, and 3) Computation of carbon sequestration in the basin. Integrated Valuation of Environmental Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST), a popular model for ecosystem service assessment based on Budyko hydrological method is used to compute Ecosystem services. The scenario of ES in two periods of time can be referenced for various approaches of prioritization and incorporation of their value into local and regional decision making for management of basin.

The present study aimed to investigate rapid weight loss (RWL) and consequent physical and psychological challenges among judo athletes at the national athlete training center in 2017. The following results were obtained. Judo athletes used weight loss methods such as "gradually reduce meal portion," "skip meals," "limit water intake," "wear sweat suit for training," and "use sauna," and had physical and mental distress from such unhealthy weight management practices. Information about weight loss was obtained from "colleagues or senior athletes," "Internet," and "head coach or coach," and not experts such as nutritionists or physicians. Thus, athletes are recommended to employ healthy weight control methods based on advice from experts, such as nutritionists and physicians.

Water management has been recognized as a crucial factor for achieving better performance and stability in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Proper water management should provide favorable water conditions, including the local humidity, membrane water content, and liquid water saturation in PEMFCs, thereby leading to more uniform electrochemical reaction and current generation. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was conducted to investigate the effects of the cathode relative humidity (RH) on the performance of a 3 by $3\;cm^2$ PEMFC with serpentine flow fields. The CFD results showed that the best performance of the PEMFC was obtained for the cathode RH of 80%, but the performance variation was small for the cathode RH range of $60{\sim}100%$. However, the loss of the PEMFC performance was significant when the cathode RH was reduced below 40%. The reason for such performance variation was investigated through the detailed inspection of ohmic loss, activation and concentration overpotential, and water and current distributions.
