  • This paper presents an experimental study on the discharge head of Cherepnov water lifter that was continuously operated with the aid of the siphon. The energy used by the Cherepnov water lifter is derived from the potential energy ofthe water itself. The lifter consists of three interconnected tanks and five pipes, one of which is open and two others are hermetically sealed. The effects of varying operating parameters such as the tank and pipe size, the ratio between head of discharge and drop height were analyzed. As a result, factors that can maximize the efficiency and increase the average delivery rate were indentified. When the ratio between head of discharge and drop height is about 0.5, the efficiency of Cherepnov water lifter is maximized. In order to design the efficient Cherepnov water lifter, the discharge head of the Cherepnov water lifter should be assigned to be twice as much as the drop height. The effect of tank size on the efficiency is less than 5%, while the effect of the pipe size is not negligible. The larger the pipe size is, the more the efficiency increases.

  • Continuous seismic refraction, reflection and echo-sounder surveys conducted at Koyna Project site provided geotechnical information which helped in choosing the alignment for Head race tunnel and in designing and choosing the site for Lake Tap. Seismic refraction survey both on land and in shallow water determined depths to bedrock and helped in inferring the bedrock quality. Seismic reflection survey mapped the subsurface stratigraphy with high resolution. Reservoir-bed and bedrock contours drawn from the results of the survey helped in choosing the tunnel alignment and the lake tap position cost effectively. It was inferred from the results of the survey that the geology and the quality of rock do not change unexpectedly around the site for extension of Head race tunnel and the lake tapping. The bedrock levels evaluated by seismic survey agreed remarkably well with those inferred in boreholes having Rock Quality Designation 90 percent or more.

  • In this study the effects of fluid viscosity on the pump performances for a conventional centrifugal pump were experimentally investigated. The study aimed to compare the pump characteristics between water and viscosity fluids. In order to measure the flow rate and pressure, v-notch welt and bourdon pressure gauges were used for the codes of KS B6301 and KS B6302. The working fluids were water, aqueous sugar and glycerin solutions. The results were summarized as follows : The experimental results were summarized as follows : the pump characteristics of the total head, shaft power, and efficiency with high viscosity fluids were different from those of water. When the viscosity of the applied fluid was increased, the total head and efficiency were more decreased than those of water. The decreasing gradients of the total head and the efficiency were larger than water due to the increased disk friction losses at the duty operation point. However, the shut-off head was almost constant regardless the viscosity of applied fluids. Each efficiency curves for the sugar $20w\%$ and glycerin $20w\%$ solutions was decreased up to $15.1\%$ and $34.4\%$ than that of water, respectively.

  • In this study it was adopted on sea dike monitoring that the safety monitoring with statistical limits which was adapted usually on safety monitoring by measuring pressures, stresses or deformations. And also the hydraulic head loss rate change according to passage of time was calculated for the purpose of safety monitoring. Safety monitoring by setting the statistical limit on the measured pore water pressure graphs need to be supplemented with an additional method of monitoring because the difference between the rise and fall of the tide was irregular. Safety monitoring by the limits set from values predicted by linear regression and standard errors on the hydraulic head loss graph was not affected by irregularity of tide. But if the condition of an embankment is changed gradually and slowly, it will not be detected on the hydraulic head loss graph. The graph of hydraulic head loss rate for every 24 hours vs date showed clearly that the sea water blocking state was getting better or not even though it was changed gradually and slowly.

  • Drip irrigation system is a low energy cost method which can efficiently save and supply water by dropping water slowly on the crop's root zone during crop growth. In the drip irrigation system, disk filters take an important role to physically remove impurity (inorganic and suspended organic) particles present in agricultural water which can cause emitter clogging. For the purpose, both top-and-bottom surfaces of the disk are grooved in micron size flowing from outside to inside. However, many congested flow paths in disk filter media incur higher head loss of inflow water resulting in relatively decreasing velocities depending on operation time than sand and mesh filters. Therefore, it is important to optimize the structure of disk filter in micro irrigation system. The head loss of disk filter media takes also charge of more than 60 % of total head loss in whole disk filter. This study is to find the appropriate cross-sectional shape of the disk groove to minimize the head loss by executing the experiment. The experiment used three disk filters that have similar filter body but have a half-elliptic and two kinds of triangular cross sections. The experimental results showed that the disk filter with half-elliptic cross sections of disk grooves have less head loss than the disk filter with regular triangular one.

  • The spatial and temporal non-uniform distribution of precipitation makes water management difficult. Due to climate change, nonuniform distribution of precipitation is worsening, and droughts and floods are occurring frequently. Additionally, the intensity of droughts and floods is intensifying, making existing water management systems difficult. From June 2022 to June 2023, most of the water storage rates of major dams in the Yeongsan river and Seomjin river basin were below 30%. In the case of Juam dam, which is the most dependent on water use in the basin, the water storage rate fell to 20.3%, the lowest ever. Pyeongnim dam recorded the lowest water storage rate of 27.3% on May 4, 2023. Due to a lack of precipitation starting in the spring of 2022, Pyeongnim dam was placed at a drought concern level on June 19, 2022, and entered the severe drought level on August 21. Pyeongrim dam and Suyangje(dam) have different operating institutions. Nevertheless, the low water level was not reached at Pyeongnim dam through organic linkage operation in a drought situation. Pyeongnim dam was able to stably supply water to 63,000 people in three counties. In order to maximize the use of limited water resources, we must review ways to move water smoothly between basins and water sources, and prepare for water shortages caused by climate change by establishing a consumer-centered water supply system.

  • In this study, energy conversion from thermal energy to mechanical power by using n-pentane was tested and exergy variation, cycle number, water quantity pumped and thermal efficiency were analyzed. The energy conversion was done and the water head could be ten meters on the experimental conditions. The operating temperature range of cycle was recommended to be around the liquid-vapour saturation temperature of the working fluid on the viewpoint of the maximum work. The cycle diagram was analyzed by the exergy analysis. For the constant water head, the cycle number was decreased and the water quantity per day was increased and thermal efficiency become higher when the water quantity per cycle become increasing. For the constant pumping water quantity per cycle, cycle number and the water quantity per day was decreased and the thermal efficiency become higher because the saturation temperature become higher when the water head become higher.

  • The cross-flow turbine is a key hydraulic power system that is widely due to low costs, high efficiency, and low maintenance. In particular, the cross-flow turbine considered as the most suitable turbine for low head situations as it is known to operate down to 5 m of water head. However, the conventional cross-flow turbine is unsuitable for ultra-low head situations with less than a 3 m water head. In this study, we propose an inverted-type cross-flow turbine to overcome the limitations of conventional cross-flow turbines under ultra-low head situations. First, we described the limitations of conventional turbines and suggested a new turbine for the ultra-low head circumstances. Second, we investigated the performance of the new turbine using CFD analysis. Results demonstrated the effects of the design parameters, such as number of blades and rotor diameter ratio, on the performance of the suggested turbine. As a result, we developed an inverted-type cross-flow turbine with up to 60% efficiency under low water head conditions.

  • The Kaplan turbine model has been tested and analized. The blade angle and the guide vane opening of the turbine model were designed to be varied according to the best combination of guide vane and runner blade opening. When the changes in head and output were comparatively large, the efficincy drop were small, so the efficiency characteristics and stability of the entire operating condition were maintained in good condition. These results showed that the developed model in this study will be suitable for small hydro power stations with large changes in head and load.

  • The two main methods to prepare water samples for analyzing volatile organic compounds(VOC's) were investigated. One is the purge and trap(PT) method and another is the head space(HS) sampling method. Both methods were effective to transfer the low boiling point components from the water sample onto the capillary column. The cryo-focusing at the top of the main capillary column was an effective way to obtain the sharpness of the chromatographic peaks but could be avoided when a semi-wide bore column was used. The recovery from the same amount of the sample was better in PT than in HS but a larger sample volume in HS method could compensate the lower efficiency. Therefore PT is suitable to the analysis of drinking water where the very low concentration must be determined. HS is suitable to waste water analysis because of the easiness of the operation. The repeatability was good and similar in both methods. For the contamination of the former sample, both methods were tough and could be used without any problems. The matrix effect which could change the equilibrium parameters in HS method was find negligible in many components. The actual samples such as tap water and river water were analyzed with both methods concerning 16 components regulated in Korea.
