  • An emergy analysis of the main energy flows driving the economy of humans and life support systems consists of environmental energies, fuels, and imports, all expressed as solar emjoules. Total emergy use (371 E20 sej/yr) of the Western Nakdong River Basin is 97 per cent from imported sources, fuels and goods and services. Emergy flows from the environment such as rain and geological uplift flux accounted for only 2.9 percent of total emergy use. Emergy yield ratio and environment loading ratio were 1.03 and 33.27, respectively. Emergy sustainability index, a ratio of emergy yield ratio to environment loading ratio, is therefore less than one, which is indicative of highly developed consumer oriented economies. It is necessary for an efficient management of Western Nakdong River Basin to reduce pollution load basically and to restructure economic activities into an environmental friendly industrial structure depending on renewable energy and resources.

  • This study is aimed to produce natural dyeing garments, which contain the sentiments and color sense of Koreans, by using various household supplies, with a view to increase the values added and utilization of natural dyeing. The dyes mainly used for this study are multi-colored ones which are durable after dyeing and can represent various colors. They include Lithodpermum officinale, Caesalpinia sappan, Rubia Cordifolia, Pellodendron Bak, Curcuma Longa L., fallen Ginkgo Biloba, Artemisia Princeps, and Quereus acutissima carr shell. Considering water pollution and other things, aluminum acetate and ferrous chloride were used as mordants. Cheap and practical materials such as cotton cloth and those with traditional patterns and elegance such as silk and ramie fabrics were used to produce baby goods, household supplies, clothes, and accessories. The produced supplies closely contact with our body, so they may have a great effect on human body. The household supplies produced include rug, bedclothes, room bedclothes, curtain, bedding set, cushion, and sunlight blind, in consideration of the functionality or medical actions of the goods which are closely related to the human skin. The infant supplies produced include longcloth for newborn baby, bedding set, gauze handkerchief, and doll. The clothes include night gown, shirt, bath gown, and Korean traditional clothes. The accessories include tablecloth, cup pad, bag, wrapping cloth, mouse and keyboard cushion, and scarf. Nowadays, consumers prefer environment-friendly naturally dyed garments and products. In order to control the naturally dyed garments and products which are traded in the domestic market, it is urgent to introduce such ecological marks as 'Toxproof' and 'Ecoproof.' Currently, many ordinary persons, who are not experts, have interest and participate in natural dyeing, but they simply produce naturally dyed garments, not artistic works or everyday supplies. The present author expects this study will contribute to the production of household goods by such persons. The author also hopes that they will develop and commercialize such designs as suit to modern tastes and senses based on the unique cultural assets of Koreans, so that Korean naturally dyed products may be recognized as reliable commodities equipped with international competitiveness.

  • Purpose: The present study explored cookie making performance using Jeju magma seawater to elucidate the effects of minerals in water on quality of baked goods. Methods: Seven water samples were analyzed for their mineral content, pH and water hardness. Starch pasting properties of flour in water samples was analyzed using RVA, and cookie making performance using water samples was evaluated with the AACCI wire-cut cookie baking method. Quality of cookies was measured by weight loss during baking, cookie geometry, color, and firmness. Results: Hardness of water samples ranged from 0-4200, and mineral content was in the order of magma seawater > 100% ED mineral water > 50% ED mineral water > 10% ED mineral water > tap water > Samdasoo > distilled water. RVA results showed that water hardness exhibited significant relationships with pasting temperature (p<0.05, R=0.863), peak viscosity (p<0.001, R=0.944), final viscosity (p<0.05, R=0.861), and setback (p<0.05, R=0.782). Cookie baking results showed that cookie diameter increased in the order of magma seawater < 100% ED mineral water < 50% ED mineral water < 10% ED mineral water $\approx$ tap water < Samdasoo < distilled water. Conclusion: As mineral content in water increased, flour pasting temperature and viscosity increased, whereas cookie diameter decreased with color fading. However, cookies formulated with 50% ED mineral water showed similar cookie geometry and texture to those with tap water. Therefore, controlling the mineral content of water can be successfully applied to produce mineral-enriched cookies.

  • The concept of virtual water has been largely applied in the study of regional, national, and global water flows with particular emphasis on water scarcity. Despite water traditionally being managed locally, certain global forces influence the local water resource scarcity/availability and hence virtual water exchanges worldwide. It is therefore of necessity that the significant forces be examined to understand the relationship between available water in a region and the variability and trends in environmental, social, and economic factors that are of utmost importance in the formulation of water resources management policies. This study therefore reviewed recent literature from 2003 - 2019 to determine the significant indicators of virtual water trade at different spatiotemporal levels. The study examined and compared the major approaches to virtual water trade flows accounting, and also identified and discussed policy implications and future research options concerning the analysis of virtual water trade. Available information has shown that virtual water trade is significantly influenced by economic (GDP, Demand-Supply of goods and services), geographical (Distance), institutional (population) and environmental (water availability, arable land, precipitation) factors. Reports further show that the selection of a given approach for virtual water trade flows accounting will depend on the scope of the study, the available datasets, and other research preferences. Accordingly, this study suggests that the adoption of multidisciplinary approaches to virtual water trade, taking into consideration the spatial and temporal variations in water resources availability and the complexity of environmental and socioeconomic factors will be pivotal for establishing the basis for the conservation of water resources worldwide.

  • The network structure of a glass is known to be cracked by a chemical reaction, diffusion, and ion exchange of alkali ion, formed at the crack tip of the glass surface, when water is present on the glass surface. Since the durability of glass is reduced, due to the fatigue phenomenon mentioned above, pollution problem of glass goods, especially bottle glass, is becoming acute gradually. A static fatigue phenomenon was studied thermodynamically in this paper, and a mechanism of static fatigue, a quality control, and a method of preventing pollution for the main local glass goods were also investigated. The PH of reacted solution and the quantity of extracted alkali were measured at different conditions such as temperature, reacting time, particle size of a crushed glass sample, and the nature of reacting solution. The enthalpy change was calculated from the Arrhenius equation. The results are given below; 1) The absolute value of enthalpy change for the bottle glass was found to be higher than the for the flat glass. 2) The fatigue phenomenon of a glass was more sensitive to the temperature than to the reacting time. 3) The durability of glass in acid solution is stronger than in alkaline solution. 4) The substance which cracks the network structure of glas is considered the hydroxyl ion.

  • Economic theory tell us, consumers always make a choice to maximize their utility. In the market system, consumers' choices are revealed and policy maker taking into account the aggregated consumers choice such as price, supply and demand. However, water resources as a public goods, therefore typically there is no market and does no aggregated information for residential water use. This study explore the consumers' willingness to pay for higher quality for residential water. Over 1,000 households responded for this survey and willingness to pay has been estimated. Furthermore, consumers' behaviors of residential water are examined. Consumers are willing to reduce the amount of water use with more than 50% of increasing water price, but stay almost constant with less than 25% of increasing which mean that current price level is not high enough to derive water saving. If consumers can have better quality of water, they willing to pay additional 16%, $153\;won/m^3/month$, more than their current price. Based on the derived information, we suggested policy direction for residential water policy.

  • Superabsorbent Polymers (SAPs) are hydrophilic synthetic polymers which could absorb water by hundreds of their own weight. They are used for multiple purpose including hygienic goods, soil conditioners, and hospital supplies. It is necessary to investigate the standard of their use including the amendment rate for soil application in agricultural fields. It is also important to understand their effects on the soil water content and engineering characteristics. The objective of this study is to find the water absorbing capacity and reusability of SAPs, and the characteristics of water release and effect of them on soil water content and engineering characteristics. In the result, SAPs per unit weight (1 g) used for this research could absorb about 200 g of water in max. The water absorbing capacity decreased after SAPs were used repeatedly. Released water of SAPs could provide the soils with about 9 % of the soil water content. Soil water content increased with decreasing distance from the SAPs. The distance of release was spreaded out with increasing water absorbed of SAPs. Finally, when a drainage and the capacity of soil water content were considered, it is recommended to amend the SAPs with soil by less than 0.25 %.
