  • It is very important to analyze the correlation between discharge and water quality. The observation of discharge and water quality are effective at same point as well as same time for real time management. But no less significant is the fact that there are some of real time water quality monitoring stations far from the T/M water stage. Pyeongchanggang station is one of them. In this case, it need to observe accurate discharge data, and to develop forecasting program or system using real time data. In this paper, discharge on Pyeongchanggang station was calculated by developed runoff neural network model, and compared with discharge using WMS(Watershed Modeling System) model. WMS shows better results when peak discharge is small and hydrograph is smooth. Forecasted discharge of neural network model have achieved the highest overall accuracy of specific discharge and WMS. Neural network model forecast change of discharge well on unrecored station.

  • The quantity of a discharge load can change with changes in rainfall in the area with a combined sewer system (CSS). To evaluate the implementation appropriately in the management of total maximum daily loads (TMDLs), the effects of rainfall changes should be considered in the estimation of the discharge load. The rainfall condition for the estimation of the discharge load in a certain year should be standardized to the same rainfall condition as that of the reference year. However, the calculation process is very complicated with its potential limitations. This study investigated and developed relatively simple methods for estimating the discharge load. Load conversion method (LCM) is designed to convert the discharge load under the current rainfall condition into that of the reference rainfall conditions. Simple rainfall data method (SRDM) is to simplify the estimation process of the discharge load by the simple conversion of rainfall data. These methods were applied to calculate the discharge load and examine the estimation results. From the results of this study the application of these methods may be useful for estimating the discharge load in the TMDL process.

  • The effect of gas composition on the discharge characteristics and the ozone production in silent discharge (SD) process was investigated. The major gas components, $N_2$, $O_2$, and $H_2O$ influence the discharge properties according to their relative magnitude of ionization thresholds and electron affinities. The generated amount of ozone increased with the discharge energy by increasing the electron mean energy. The higher oxygen content injected, the higher ozone produced. A small amount of water vapor significantly lowered the discharge onset voltage by the ionization threshold decreasing effect and high electrical conductivity. However, the further increase of water vapor contributes to decrease the electron density by the electron affinity The addition of water greatly reduced the ozone generation through the formation of OH radical and the catalytic ozone destruction process.

  • This work is for examining a simplified equation based on the rational formula, which can easily decide storm-water detention volume in small urban catchments. The storm-water detention volume is determined by the inflow hydrograph flowing to detention basin and the outflow hydrograph discharged from the detention basin. The ratio of average outflow over the period of rainfall duration against allowable discharge was 0.5 in former simplified equation. But this research has found that the average outflow ratio depends on the storage methodology. In the case of the on-line storage method, the average outflow ratio is a function of the time of concentration of the catchments and rainfall duration, which ranged from 0.5~1.0. In the case of the off-line storage method, the average ratio is a function of peak discharge and allowable discharge except above time of concentration and rainfall duration, where its function value ranged from 1.0~2.0. When applying this equation to small catchment in Mokpo city, South Korea, we could easily calculate the relation curve between the storm-water detention volume and allowable discharge.

  • A basic study on the discharge phenomenum of rod-to-rod microgap in the deionized water has been investigated with emphasis on the microgap spacing. The I-V charateristics for the case of ac and dc applied voltages had 3 different regions, a low conduction ohmic region, a medium conduction corona discharge region, and a high conduction arc discharge region. The corona discharge in the deionized water for the case of ac and de applied voltages had no different from the those in the air. But the arc discharge in the water occurred pulsative with sound which, however it is not clear, would be encounted due to the influences from the low temperature of the ambient water, vast of electrolytic generated electronegative gases(e.g. $O_2$, OH, O) and water molecules($H_2O$), and the space charge effects near the rod in the microgap from the ions of $H^+$, $OH^-$, $O_2^-$, etc, whose mobilities in the water are originally very low.

  • The hybrid discharge reactor was designed for the application of wastewater treatment and the removal of hazardous volatile organic substances in water. This discharge type was similar to the barrier discharge, and the surface discharge on the dielectric surface was propagated to the water surface. That caused the heterogeneous chemical reaction strongly at the interface between the working gases and the water surface. Changes of the conductivity, acidity, and the dissolved ozone with respect to the treatment time and water quantities were studied as the fundamental experiment. The concentration of hydrogen ions largely increased with increasing the treatment time and the conductivity increased with respect to the increase of water quantities under the constant other discharge parameters.

  • This paper describes electrical and optical characteristics of discharge developments in water under inhomogeneous fields caused by impulse voltages. Predischarge current and discharge light images were observed for different water resistivities and applied voltages between the hemispherical water tank and the needle electrode. The electrical parameters characterizing discharge developments are analyzed based on the discharge light images and voltage-current (V-I) curves, and electrical resistances derived by voltage and current waveforms. As a result, when the streamer corona is initiated at the tip of the needle electrode, the transient resistance suddenly drops and V-I curves form a 'loop'. The length of streamer propagation is increased with increasing peak value of the applied voltage, and the streamer corona extension is enlarged with increasing water resistivity. The electrical resistances before streamer corona initiation are rarely changed by different applied voltages. On the other hand, the electrical resistances after streamer corona initiation are found to be inversely proportional to the peak value of the applied voltage, and the decreasing rates for higher water resistivities are much higher than those for lower water resistivities. The time to streamer corona initiation and the time to the second current peak become shorter as the voltage increases. Finally, the calculated resistances after streamer corona initiation are almost the same trace of measured resistances, but they are smaller than the measured values.

  • The use of plasma has increased in bio-application field in recent years. Particularly, water treated by arc discharge or atmospheric pressure plasma has been actively utilized in bio-industry. In this study, we have developed a plasma activated water generating system. For this system, two kinds of plasma sources; dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma and arc discharge plasma have been used. The discharge energy was calculated using the breakdown voltage and current, and the emission spectrum was measured to investigate the generated reactive species. We also analyzed the amount of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in water using the chemical methods and nitric oxide sensor. Finally, the influence of plasma generated reactive species on the germination and growth of spinach (Spinacia oleracea) was investigated. Spinach is a green leafy vegetable that contains a large amount of various physiologically active organic compounds. However, it is characterized with a low seed germination rate.

  • This study aims to analyze the hydrological characteristics of downstream areas by the dam discharge of Soyanggang dam by using HEC-RAS Model. As a result of analyzing the data of dam discharge divided into hydropeaking discharge and total discharge, it as found that the maximum hydro-peaking discharge and the maximum total discharge have been 254.4 CMS and 1567.7 CMS respectively for the past 11 years. When the hydro-peaking discharge was applied to HEC-RAS Model, there occurred some sections where the water level rapidly changed, but the velocity of moving water was quite stable in the range between 0.23 m/sec and 1.16m/sec. Besides, when the total discharge was applied to this model, the submersible bridge along the dam downstream was flooded, and in some sections, the water level increased over the flood plain. Accordingly, this study judged that it is required to necessarily consider all the influence made by an increase of Soyanggang Dam's discharge when waterfronts are installed or used at dam downstream areas.

  • An hydraulic experiment was carried out in an open channel flume in order to investigate the water discharge capability of the sluice caisson for tidal power generation, which greatly affects the economical efficiency of the construction of a tidal power plant. To predict the influence of change in the major design parameters relating to the sluice shape on the water discharge capability of the sluice, the experiment was carried out very precisely. The experiment was carried out for the six different sluice models of different widths and bottom heights of the sluice throat section. The experimental data showed that the water discharge generally increased by increasing the width of the throat section if the side shape of the sluice was the same. In addition, the coefficient of discharge was larger when the bottom height of the throat section was higher for the two bottom heights that were tested.
