Anti-depressant Effect of the Extracts of Aconitum carmichaeli (부자(附子)의 우울증 억제효과에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives : The water and methanol extracts of Aconitum carmichaeli(Aconiti Tuber Preparat) were investigated for their anti-depressant effects. Methods : In this study, reserpine-induced hypothermia test, tail suspension test and hot plate test. Additionally, the brain monoamine oxidase activity was determined in vivo. Results: In the reserpine-induced hypothermia test, both extracts suppressed the fall of body temperature compared to the control group in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting the inhibition on hypothermia. In the tail suspension test, the methanol extract dose-dependently reduced the duration of immobility by 28.4% at a dose of 1 g/kg compared to control group, which is more effective than the water extract. In the hot plate test, the water extract and methanol extract increased the jump latency time compared to the control group, showing the inhibition rate of 198% and 182%, respectively, at a dose of 1 g/kg. Methanol extracts potently inhibited the brain monoamine oxidase activity in an in vivo assay compared to the control group, showing 84.6% inhibition, but the water extract revealed very weak activity. Conclusions : Above results suggested that the extract of Aconitum carmichaeli can be useful for the prevention and treatment of depression.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of mordanting condition in the Gardenic Jasminoides Ellis Dyeing. The results were as follows; 1. The color fastness was compared and analysed that colored sample as $AIK(SO_4)_2,\;CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O,\;Ca(OH)_2,\;NaOH,\;HOOC(CHOH)_2COOH,\;K_2\;Cr_2O_7$ group was better than non-colored sample and also a silk was better than a cotton in fastness. Mordant as NaOH, HOOC$(CHOH)_2COOH,\;K_2Cr_2O_2,\;AIK(SO_4)_2$ were better than anything else in fastness and the effective method of the mordant to a silk was pre & aft mordant(4) and to a cotton was aft-mordant(3). 2. The comparison between methanol and distilled water, which used in extracted dyenig solution, the latter was more than one grade in fastness. 3. The color-difference value-test indicated that colored sample groups more redish and bluish color than non-colored sample. 4. The comparison between methanol and distilled water, which used to extract dyeing solutions, the latter were more light, greenish and yellowish colors. 5. When compared with the methanol and distilled water, as used to extract dyeing solutions, showed that the methanol was more clear and light yellow and the distilled water was more orange color and more effective in color fastness.

Screening of Korean Traditional Medicines and Medicinal Herbs for Antimicrobial Activity Against Pathogenic Bacteria

  • This study screened 76 Korean traditional patent medicines and 58 medicinal herbs for antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria. Among the prescriptions methanol and hot water extracts of Samsoum, Chujunghwang-yont'ang, and Sashinhwan showed antimicrobial activities against E. coli and Chujunghwang-yont'ang showed the strongest antimicrobial activity. Among the medicinal herbs, hot water and methanol extracts of Terminalia chebula, Caesalpinia sappan, and Coptis chinensis showed the strongest antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli O157, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella flexnery, Shigella sonnei and Salmonella typhimurium. An interesting characteristic of the traditional medicines such as Samsoum, Chujunghwang-yont'ang, and Sashinhwan was that both methanol and hot water extracts were active. Chujunghwang-yont'ang exhibited the strongest antimicrobial activities against the microorganisms tested. Water and methanol extracts of Terminalia chebula, Caesalpinia sappan, and Coptis chinensis showed the strong of inhibitory effects on the growth of all microorganisms tested.

A Newly Designed a TiO2-Loaded Spherical ZnS Nano/Micro-Composites for High Hydrogen Production from Methanol/Water Solution Photo-Splitting

  • A new system using $TiO_2$ (nano-sized, band-gap 3.14 eV)-impregnated spherical ZnS (micro-sized, band-gap 2.73 eV) nano/micro-composites (Ti 0.001, 0.005, 0.01, and 0.05 mol %/ZnS) was developed to enhance the production of hydrogen from methanol/water splitting. The ZnS particles in a spherical morphology with a diameter of about 2-4 mm which can absorb around 455 nm were prepared by hydrothermal method. This material was used as a photocatalyst with loading by nano-sized $TiO_2$ (20-30 nm) for hydrogen production. The evolution of $H_2$ from methanol/water (1:1) photo splitting over the $TiO_2$/ZnS composite in the liquid system was enhanced, compared with that over pure $TiO_2$ and ZnS. In particular, 1.2 mmol of $H_2$ gas was produced after 12 h when 0.005 mol % $TiO_2$/ZnS nano/micro-composite was used. On the basis of cyclic voltammeter (CV) and UV-visible spectrums results, the high photoactivity was attributed to the larger band gap and the lower LUMO in the $TiO_2$/ZnS composite, due to the decreased recombination between the excited electrons and holes.

Antioxidant Activities of Water or Methanol Extract from Cherry (Prunus yedoensis) and Its Utilization to the Pork Patties (버찌(Prunus yedoensis) 추출물의 항산화 활성 평가 및 돈육 패티에 이용)

  • This study was performed to investigate the antioxidant activity of cherry added into meat products. Water and methanol were used to extract the antioxidant compounds from cherry. Total phenolic compounds of the methanol and water extract of cherry were 2.17 g/100 g and 2.77 g/100 g, respectively. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity of methanol extract showed similar activities to those with ascorbic acid at all concentrations (from 0.1% to 2.0%). Especially, water extract of cherry showed similar activity to those of ascorbic acid (AA), and methanol extract, when 2% of cherry extract was added. The reducing power of cherry was not comparable to those with AA, however no differences in reducing power were observed between the water and methanol extract. The iron chelating ability of cherry was observed in the range of 17.8-94.0% at both water and methanol extracts. An increased iron chelating ability was observed with increased concentration up to 2%. Iron chelating ability for water extract of cherry tended to be lower than those with methanol extract. After pork patties were manufactured with methanol extract of cherry at 0.5 and 1.0%, physicochemical properties, lipid oxidation and microbial changes of patties were measured. The addition of methanol extract of cherry reduced pH, brightness, redness, yellowness and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS). During 14 d of storage, pH, TBARS and microbial counts were increased, while redness and yellowness values were decreased. Since the addition of methanol extract of cherry lowered TBARS during storage, it could be used as a natural antioxidant in meat products.

Changes of Biologically Active Components in Prunus mume Fruit (수확시기별 매실의 생리활성 변화)

  • In this study, we investigated changes of general components and biological activity of the fruit of Prunus mume. The average moisture content of the fruit ranged from 88.34-90.04%. Crude protein and crude fat contents were not significantly different among samples. During ripening, crude protein decreased and crude fat increased. The level of polyphenols in the fruit gradually increased during ripening. An antimicrobial activity test indicated that methanol extracts had the highest activity and that the antimicrobial activity increased gradually with harvest time. Antimicrobial substances in methanol extracts of the fruit maintained their activity after heating at $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes and were unaffected by changes in pH. The antioxidant activities of extracts isolated with different solvents were: methanol> ethylacetate > water> ether> hexane. Antioxidant activity was not significantly different for different harvest times. The antioxidant index of the methanol extract was also the highest in electron donating activity.

  • The aim of this study is to provide vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) information for the study of process which directly synthesize dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from $CO_2$. For this study we collected some necessary VLE systems data of Methanol-Water, Methanol-DMC, $CO_2$-DMC, $CO_2$-Methanol, $CO_2$-Methanol, and performed VLE calculation with Peng-Robinson equation of state, Wong-Sandler mixing rules that widely used in chemical industry. These calculation results relatively agreed with VLE data well. Optimized Parameters of EoS given through this calculation will be used as some valuable information for fundamental study, process development and process optimization of DMC direct synthesis.

Screening of electron donating ability, antibacterial activity and nitrite scavenging effect of some herbal extracts (Herb추출물의 전자공여능, 항균활성 및 아질산염 소거능 검색)

  • Six kinds of herbs(applemint, geranium, lemonbalm, rosemary, sage and thyme) were extracted with water and 95% methanol, and the electron donating ability, antibacterial activity and nitrite scavenging effect were examined. The electron donating ability of herbs ranged from 60.7 to 92.2% and the highest value was observed in geranium, followed by sage and lemonbalm. Antibacterial activity of methanol extracts was much stronger than that of water extracts and gram positive bacteria were more sensitive than gram negative bacteria. Rosemary and geranium exhibited excellent antimicrobial activities against a wide range of bacteria. Nitrite scavenging activity, which was measured at various pH conditions(1.2, 3.0, 3.6, 4.2), was the highest in all herbs at pH 1.2 and the lowest at pH 4.2, suggesting that it is pH dependent. Methanol fraction also provided higher nitrite scavenging effect than the water fraction.

Anti-browning Activities of Green Tea Water Extracts on Seasoned Squid (녹차 물추출물의 조미오징어 갈변억제 효과)

  • It was reported that green tea extract has antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. To improve the quality of seasoned squid, green tea water extract was sprayed on seasoned squid (water content 25%) and water content was adjusted to 27% and 29%. During storage at $30^{\circ}C$, TBA value, total plate count, browning were analyzed. Browning were analysed by 3 different method (absorbance of water solubilized color, 5% KOH-methanol solubilized color and color difference meter). Water and 5% KOH-methanol solubilized color showed good correlation, but color index detected by color difference meter was not. Green tea water extract slowed TBA value increment and reduced total plate count, so it was supposed that green tea water extract acts positively in manufacturing seasoned squid.

The Hydroxyl Group-Solvent and Carbonyl Group-Solvent Specific Interactions for Some Selected Solutes Including Positional Isomers in Acetonitrile/Water Mixed Solvents Monitored by HPLC

  • We have evaluated the specific hydroxyl group-solvent and carbonyl group-solvent interactions by using an Alltima C18 stationary phase and by measuring the retention data of carefully selected solutes in 60/40, 70/30, and 80/20(v/v%) acetonitrile/water eluents at 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 oC. The selected solutes are phenol, acetophenone, alkylbenznes(benzene to hexylbenznene), 4 positional isomers of phenylbutanol, 5-phenyl-1-pentanol, 3 positional isomers of alkylarylketone derived from butylbenzene, and 1-phenyl-2-hexanone. The magnitudes of hydroxyl group-acetonitrile/water specific interaction enthalpies are larger than those of carbonyl group-acetonitrile/water specific interaction enthalpies in general while the magnitudes of carbonyl group-methanol/water specific interaction enthalpies are larger than those of hydroxyl group-methanol/water specific interactions. We observed clear discrepancies in functional group-solvent specific interaction among positional isomers. The variation trends of solute transfer enthalpies and entropies with mobile phase composition in the acetonitrile/water system are much different from those in the methanol/water system. The well-known pocket formation of acetonitrile in aqueous acetonitrile mixtures has proven to be useful to explain such phenomena.
