ETA (ethanolamine), a pH control agent, has been used as an ammonia substitute in the secondary system of nuclear power plants since 2001. It is impossible to remove ETA from the wastewater treatment system in the nuclear power plant operating currently, because it is the non-biodegradable organics in terms of the environmental. The optimum process and chemicals for the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) & N with the field sample were investigated. More than 95% of Ammonium ions, contained much in wastewater, was removed with a diffused aeration system. COD could be removed over 90% through the process that includes the oxidation with mixed peroxidants (sodium persulfate/sodium percarbonate) followed by the physicochemical treatment with coagulants.

Characteristics of biological hydrogen production rate and organic acid under anaerobic fermentation process were investigated with sugar wastewater. Hydrogen production rate was higher with alkaline pre-treatment than acidic pre-treatment, resulting in 70% increment. An adequate supply of the nutrients (N or P) into raw sugar wastewater could increase hydrogen production rate. Carbohydrate degradation of the anaerobic fermentation process was not directly related with hydrogen production. Sugar wastewater with the addition of the nutrients shows 3 times higher B/A ratio than the raw sugar wastewater. B/A ratio of the wastewater with alkaline pre-treatment and nutrients addition was most higher than other samples, showing 4.02 of B/A ratio. Higher B/A ratio shows higher hydrogen production rate at each sample.
Direct treatment of municipal wastewater by forward osmosis (FO) process was evaluated in terms of water flux decline, reverse salt diffusion, pollutants rejection and concentration efficiency by using synthetic seawater as the draw solution. It was found that when operating in PRO mode (active layer facing the draw solution), although the FO membrane exhibited higher osmotic water flux, more severe flux decline and reverse salt diffusion was also observed due to the more severe fouling of pollutants in the membrane support layer and accompanied fouling enhanced concentration polarization. In addition, although the water flux decline was shown to be lower for the FO mode (active layer facing the feed solution), irreversible membrane fouling was identified in both PRO and FO modes as the water flux cannot be restored to the initial value by physical flushing, highlighting the necessity of chemical cleaning in long-term operation. During the 7 cycles of filtration conducted in the experiments, the FO membrane exhibited considerably high rejection for TOC, COD, TP and $NH_4{^+}-N$ present in the wastewater. By optimizing the volume ratio of seawater draw solution/wastewater feed solution, a concentration factor of 3.1 and 3.7 was obtained for the FO and PRO modes, respectively. The results demonstrated the validity of the FO process for direct treatment of municipal wastewater by using seawater as the draw solution, while facilitating the subsequent utilization of concentrated wastewater for bioenergy production, which may have special implications for the coastline areas.
This study investigated the treatment of acetaminophen in municipal wastewater by conventional ozonation, ozone-based advanced oxidation, ozone/UV, and the electro-peroxone process. The ozone/UV process and electro-peroxone process of electric power consumption increased 1.25 and 2.04 times, respectively, compared to the ozone process. The pseudo-steady OH radical concentration was the greatest in the electro-peroxone process and lowest in the ozone process. The specific energy consumption for TOC decomposition of the ozone/UV process and electro-peroxone process were 22.8% and 15.5% of the ozone process, respectively. Results suggest that it is advantageous in terms of degradation performance and energy consumption to use a combination of processes in municipal wastewater treatment, rather than an ozone process alone. In combination with the ozone process, the electrolysis process was found to be more advantageous than the UV process.
In this work, extensions to partial least squares (PLS) for wastewater treatment (WWT) process monitoring are discussed. Conventional data gathered by monitoring WWT systems are usually time varying, high dimensional, correlated and nonlinear, PLS has been shown to be an efficient approach in modeling and monitoring high dimensional and correlated data. To represent dynamic and nonlinear features of the data several kinds of dynamic nonlinear PLS (DNLPLS) models have been proposed. However, the complexity and ambiguity of the models make them unsuitable for WWT monitoring, Recently, dynamic fuzzy PLS (DFPLS) was proposed ...
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been recognized as one of the significant greenhouse gas (GHG) generators, due to the complex biochemical reaction and huge consumption of energy and materials. Recently, WWTPs have been built underground and they will be confronted with the challenges of mitigating GHG emissions and improving the quality of treated wastewater. Here, we focus on estimating GHG emissions to set up effective management plans for a WWTP built underground. First, we apply the process-based life cycle assessment (LCA) with an inventory database of the underground WWTP for a case study. Then, we identify significant factors affecting GHG emissions during service life using sensitivity analysis and suggest the proper tactics that could properly reduce GHG emissions from the WWTP.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomass production and dairy wastewater treatment using Chlorella vulgaris. The results indicated that the maximum percentages of biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, suspended solids, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus removed were 85.61%, 80.62%, 29.10%, 85.47%, and 65.96%, respectively, in dairy effluent at 10 d. A maximum of 1.23 g/L dry biomass was obtained in 7 d. The biomass productivity was strongly influenced by the nutrient reduction in the dairy effluent. The biodiesel produced by the C. vulgaris in the dairy effluent was in good agreement with the American Society of Testing and Materials-D6751 and European Standards 14214 standards. Therefore, using dairy effluent for microalgal cultures could be a useful and practical strategy for an advanced, environmentally friendly treatment process.
This paper describes an investigation to determine whether the activated sludge (AS) process could be used for the treatment of wastewater at the Union Carbide Coporation (UCC) plant in Seadrift, Texas. This plant presently utilizes a waste stabilization pond (WSP) system for treatment of the wastewater. The treatment system consists of an in-plant primary WSP and two off-plant WSPs (secondary and tertiary WSPs), run in series. The total hydraulic detention time of the WSP system is approximately 150 days. Several laboratory-based treatability studies have been conducted to evaluate the performace of the WSP system and the degradability of specific chemical compounds. From an additional study, it was determined that the WSP system was stressed and occasionally operating near the limit of its treatment capacity. The existing primary WSP plays an important role in the overall treatmemt system, because it not only functions as a pH and organic-strength equalization basin, but also serves as a "preconditioning" basin by fermenting high strength organic wastes to volatile organic acids for subsequent degradation in the escondary WSP. However, in view of pending RCRA legislatin conerning the "proposed organic toxicity characteristics limits" (40 CFR Part261: Federal Register, July, 1988), it is possible that the primary WSP will have to be abandoned in favor of alternative treatment options. Therefore the main purpose of this study was to perform activated sludge treatability evaluations for the development of an alternative to the existing primary WSP treatment ststem. In addition, another purpose was to determine the degradability of bis(2-chloroethyl)ether (Chlorex or CX) and benzene(BZ) in the activated sludge process. The presence of these two chemicals in the wastewater of the plant prompted the question of whatedether they could be degraded in an activated sludge system.
To remove phosphorus from the effluent of public wastewater treatment facilities, hundreds of enhanced phosphorus treatment processes have been introduced nationwide. However, these processes have a few problems including excessive maintenance cost and sludge production caused by inappropriate coagulant injection. Therefore, the optimal decision of coagulant dosage and automatic control of coagulant injection are essential. To overcome the drawbacks of conventional phosphorus removal processes, the integrated sedimentation and dissolved air flotation(SeDAF) process has been developed and a demonstration plant(capacity: 100 ㎥/d) has also been installed. In this study, various jar-tests(sedimentation and / or sedimentation·flotation) and multiple regression analyses have been performed. Particularly, we have highlighted the decision-making algorithms of optimal coagulant dosage to improve the applicability of the SeDAF process. As a result, the sedimentation jar-test could be a simple and reliable method for the decision of appropriate coagulant dosage in field condition of the SeDAF process. And, we have found that the SeDAF process can save 30 - 40% of coagulant dosage compared with conventional sedimentation processes to achieve total phosphorus (T-P) concentration below 0.2 mg/L of treated water, and it can also reduce same portion of sludge production.
