The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is expected to be a candidate for distributed power sources in the next generation, due to its high efficiency and high-temperature waste heat utilization. In this study, the 5-cell SOFC stack was operated with pure hydrogen or reformed gas at anode side and air at cathode side. When stack was operated with diesel and methane ATR reformer, the influence of the $H_2O/C,\;O_2/C$ and GHSV on performance of stacks have been investigated. The result shows that the cell voltage was decreased with the increase of $H_2O/C$ and $O_2/C$ due to the partial pressure of fuel and water, and cell voltage was more sensitive to $O_2/C$ than $H_2O/C$. Next, the dynamic model of SOFC system included with ATR reformer was established and compared with experimental data. Based on dynamic model, the operation strategy to optimize SOFC-Reformer system was suggested and simulated.

Maritime transportation is going to transfer to alternative fuels as a result of the worldwide demands toward decarbonization and tougher maritime emissions regulations. Methanol is considered as a potential marine fuel, which has the ability to reduce SOx and CO2 emissions, reduce climate change effects, and achieve the objective of green shipping. This work proposes and combines the innovative combination system of direct methanol solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), gas turbines (GT), and organic Rankine cycles (ORC) for maritime vessels. The system's primary power source is the SOFC, while the GT and PEMFC use the waste heat from the SOFC to generate useful power and improve the system's ability to use waste heat. Each component's thermodynamics model and the combined system's model are established and examined. The multigeneration system's energy and exergy efficiency are 76.2% and 30.3%, respectively. When compared to a SOFC stand-alone system, the energy efficiency of the GT and PEMFC system is increased by 19.2%. The use of PEMFC linked SOFC has significant efficiency when a ship is being started or maneuvered and a quick response from the power and propulsion plant is required.

It was tried to utilize organic waste sludge from wastewater treatment plant as a starting material to produce a solid fuel by vacuum flying. The effects of decompression levels, frying time and temperature on the calorific value and moisture of vacuum fried sludge were systematically investigated. Dewatered raw sludge used in this study had a moisture of 81.1% and calorific value of 2,930 kcal/kg. Based on the experimental observation, it was identified that the decompression level and frying time have the greatest influence on the calorific value of vacuum fried sludge. Moistures of the fried sludge at $180^{\circ}C$ for 25 min in 760 mmHg, 684 mmHg and 630 mmHg were 32.4%, 14.2% and 11.6%, respectively. Calorific values of the vacuum fried sludge at $140^{\circ}C$ for 15 min and 25 min were 5,400 kcal/kg and 5,540 kcal/kg in 684 mmHg and 5,520 kcal/kg and 5,660 kcal/kg in 630 mmHg, respectively.

Most of the low-level liquid radioactive wastes generated from PWR plants are classified into high or low total suspended solid(HTDS or LTDS), and into radiochemical and radioactive laundry waste. Although the evaporation process has a high decontami- nation ability, it has several problems such as corrosion, foam, and congestion. A new liquid waste disposal process using the ion-exchange demineralizer(IED), instead of the current evaporation process, has been introduced into the Yonggwang NPP #5 and 6. These two methods have been compared to understand the differences in this study. Aspects compared here were the released radioactivity amount of the liquid radioactive wastes, the dose of off-site residents, the decontamination factor, and the amount of the solid radioactive wastes. The IED system is designed to discharge higher radioactivity about 20% than the evaporating system, and the actual radioactivity released from the evaporating and IED system were 0.473mCi and 1.098mCi, respectively. The radioactivity released from the IED was 2.32 times higher than that of the evaporating system. The dose of off-site residents was $2.97{\times}10^{-6}$mSv for the evaporating system, and $6.47{\times}10^{-6}$mSv for IED. The decontamination factor(DF) of the evaporator is, in most cases, far lower than the lower limits of detection(LLD) with the Ge-Li detector. Due to the low concentration of the liquid wastes collected from the liquid waste system, the decontamination factor of IED is very low. Since there is not enough data on the amount of solid radioactive wastes generated by the evaporation system, the comparison on these two systems has been conducted on the basis of the design, and the comparison result was that the evaporating system generated more wastes about 40% than IED.
Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis of the thermal flow in a municipal solid waste(MSW) incinerator combustion chamber provides crucial insight on the incinerator performance. However, the combustion of the waste bed is typically treated as an arbitrarily selected profile of combustion gas. A strategy for simultaneous simulation of the waste bed combustion and the thermal flow fields in the furnace chamber was introduced to substitute the simple inlet condition. A waste bed combustion model was constructed to predict the progress of combustion in the bed and corresponding generation of the gas phase species, which assumes the moving bed as a packed bed of homogeneous fuel particles. When coupled with CFD, it provides boundary conditions such as gas temperature and species distribution over the grate, and receives radiative heat flux from CFD. The combined simulation successfully predicted the physical processes of the waste bed combustion and its interaction with the flow fields for various design and operating parameters, which was limited in the previous CFD simulations.
Waste sector has been a target of abatement policies by the most governments, even though its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission is not so high, since it is related to almost of other sectors. This study propose new GHG calculation equations which resolves logical contradiction of IPCC GL (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Guideline) equations by including waste-to-energy effects. According to two GHG calculation equations, GHG emission inventory and BAU by the year 2050 have been computed. And GHG abatement potential and marginal cost for the five abatement policies carefully selected from the previous researches have been calculated for the year 2020. The policy that makes solid fuel like RDF from flammable wastes and uses them as combustion fuel of electricity generations has been found to be the most efficient and effective one among five policies. The cumulative abatement amount when five policies not mutually exclusive are applied sequentially has been reckoned.

Simulating natural leaching process for cementitious materials is essential to perform long-term safety assessments of repositories for nuclear waste. However, the current test methods in literature are time consuming, limited to crushed material and often produce small size samples which are not suitable for further testing. This paper presents the results from the study of the physical (gas permeability as well as chloride diffusion coefficient) and mechanical properties (tensile and compressive strength and elastic modulus) of solid cementitious specimens which have been depleted in calcium by the use of a newly developed method for accelerated calcium leaching of solid specimens of flexible size. The results show that up to 4 times increase in capillary water absorption, 10 times higher gas permeability and at least 3 times higher chloride diffusion rate, is expected due to complete leaching of the Portlandite. This coincides with a 70 % decrease in mechanical strength and more than 40 % decrease in elastic modulus.

The electrorefining process, one of main processes which are composed of pyroprocess to recover the useful elements from spent fuel, and the domestic development of electrorefiner have been reviewed. The electrorefiner is composed of an anode basket containing reduced spent fuel such as uranium, transuranic and rare earth elements, and a solid cathode, which are in LiCl-KCl eutectic electrolyte. Oxidation (dissolution) reaction occurs on the anode and a pure uranium is electrochemically reduced (deposited) on the solid cathode. By application of graphite cathode, which has a self-scrapping characteristics for the uranium deposits, and a recovery of the fallen deposits by a screw conveyer, a high-throughput continuous electrorefiner with a capacity of 20 kgU/day has been developed.

Most current ships have adopted on-board diesel generators to produce electricity, but the overall efficiency of equipment is down to about 50% due to thermal losses from operations such as exhaust gas, jacket water cooler, scavenge air cooler, etc. Recently, fuel cells have been highlighted as a promising technology to reduce the effect on the environment and have a higher efficiency. Therefore, this paper suggested a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)-gas turbine (GT) using waste heat from a SOFC and SOFC-GT-steam turbine (ST) with Rankine cycle. To compare both configurations, the fuel flow rate, current density, cell voltage, electrical power, and overall efficiency were evaluated at different operating loads. The overall efficiency of both SOFC hybrid systems was higher than the conventional system.

Pyroprocessing is a promising technology for managing spent nuclear fuel. The nuclear material accounting of feed material is a challenging issue in safeguarding pyroprocessing facilities. The input material in pyroprocessing is in a solid-state, unlike the solution state in an input accountability tank used in conventional wet-type reprocessing. To reduce the uncertainty of the input material accounting, a double-stage homogenization process is proposed in considering the process throughput, remote controllability, and remote maintenance of an engineering-scale pyroprocessing facility. This study tests two types of mixing equipment in the proposed double-stage homogenization process using surrogate materials. The expected heterogeneity and accounting uncertainty of Pu are calculated based on the surrogate test results. The heterogeneity of Pu was 0.584% obtained from Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) spent fuel of 59 WGd/tU when the relative standard deviation of the mass ratio, tested from the surrogate powder, is 1%. The uncertainty of the Pu accounting can be lower than 1% when the uncertainty of the spent fuel mass charged into the first mixers is 2%, and the uncertainty of the first sampling mass is 5%.
