  • The use of food waste disposers (FWDs) can be an emerging option to manage organic food wastes in municipal sewage system. The cost-benefit analysis (CBA) of introducing domestic FDWs is conducted to access the allowable disposer market price and the economic impact on food waste management from conventional solid waste management system. If the convenience value of 10,000 won/month is taken into consideration based on survey results, the introduction of FDWs can lead to net economic benefits, allowing the capital cost of disposer up to 1,000,000 won/unit. Without the consideration of convenience value, the introduction of FWDs becomes profitable if the capital cost of disposer is less than 50,000 won/unit. In case that the value of convenience is more than 7,000 won/month, the reduction of food waste management cost is not valid for the introduction of FWDs to be non-profitable. However, if environmental externalities are considered, the proposed system could become breakeven with the cost of food waste management decreases by 54 % (60,000 won per ton).

  • In this paper, we propose a small waste appliance collection system that can be used for efficient waste appliance collection, and implement an unmanned automatic small waste appliance collector system. First, we collected cases related to the collection of waste home appliances, compared and analyzed methods, and arranged the characteristics. We analyzed at the requirements for the collection and management system of waste appliances by dividing it into the aspect of the discharger and the recycling business company. The collection system consists of a client-server structure, which is a collector system and a collection management server. The unmanned automatic collector system is divided into a control unit and a machine/mechanical unit. We identified the functions that the collector system must perform and the hardware required to perform these functions. Based on this, the collector system was implemented as an embedded system. The hardware and software used in the implementation are described and the implementation results are described. The collection system developed in this paper will contribute to the development of urban mining industry by enabling the efficient collection of waste appliances.

  • In 1987, The Brundtland Report defined a sustainable development as the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This is the concept that we should cling to, to preserve natural resources of the present for the future generation. With this concept in mind, this paper criticized that the current waste management policy has been neglecting resource preservation aspect of waste management policy while giving too much emphasis on reducing waste generation. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to analyze how waste management policy can affect preservation of natural resources, and to investigate policy alternatives that can reduce both the volume of waste generated and the amount of natural resources that need to be consumed in the production process. The study was conducted based on the literature survey and system dynamics simulation. Borrowing Randers and Meadows's solid waste model with some modification of parameter and variables, this paper simulate several policy alternatives to figure out the most effective waste management policy set that can meet the need of the present without compromising the ability of the future generation to meet their own needs. Main concern was how to link waste management policy with resource management policy that can lead to minimization of waste generation and resource consumption.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a novel system for on-site management of construction and demolition waste. Construction waste has always been one of largest waste in the world and has long lacked an effective management system. Although various countries have planned the disposal of waste at the political level, the real-time and effective management of construction sites has not been mentioned. Especially in China, the continuous development of the construction industry also generates a large amount of waste, and China is not prepared for a large amount of construction waste. In order to alleviate the huge impact of construction waste on society and the environment, this study proposes a waste management method that combines Building Information Modeling technology and Radio Frequency Identification technology. Through this research, by using information technology to manage the generation and discharge of construction waste, and record the amount and information of waste generation, also improve the management method of construction waste.

  • The vast volumes of data that are generated during site characterization and associated research for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste require effective data management to properly chronicle and archive this information. The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company, SKB, established the SICADA database for site selection, evaluation, analysis, and modeling. The German Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal, BGE, established ArbeitsDB, a database and document management system, and the ELO data system to manage data collected according to the Repository Site Selection Act. The U.K. Nuclear Waste Services established the Data Management System to manage any research and survey data pertaining to nuclear waste storage and disposal. The U.S. Department of Energy and Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management established the Technical Data Management System for data management and subsequent licensing procedures during site characterization surveys. The presented cases undertaken by these national agencies highlight the importance of data quality management and the scalability of data utilization to ensure effective data management. Korea should also pursue the establishment of both a data management concept for radioactive waste disposal that considers data quality management and scalability from a long-term perspective and an associated data management system.

  • Since the use of plastics in various goods such as film, containers, and packaging has been increasing in Korea, the generation of plastic waste is increasing. Plastic wastes are managed by waste charge system, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system and voluntary agreement of plastic waste collection-recycling system. Recently, the management of plastic waste is becoming a social issues due to the refusal of the collection of plastic waste including waste plastic bag and waste vinyl. The ministry of environment in korea was set up the comprehensive plan for recycling waste management in accordance with the circulation cycle of manufacturing and production - distribution and consumption - separate and discharge - collection and sorting - recycling. In this study, the improvements for management of plastic waste were suggested with the review of domestic waste plastics management and the comprehensive plan by the ministry of environment.

  • The main purposes of this study were to survey and assess the current situation surrounding solid waste generation in school foodservices, to identify and evaluate the measures(reduction and recycling programs) taken by the foodservices for waste disposal, and to suggest appropriate reform measures to improve the current status, especially in terms of environmental preservation. Questionnaires on solid waste management practices were mailed to 206 school foodservice dietitians in the Kyungbuk region : a 64.0%(N = 130) response rate was obtained. While there are food waste and packaging waste generated from the foodservice operations, about a third(34.1%) of the foodservice operations were responsible for the disposal of both the food wastes and packaging wastes. About 90% of school foodservice managers were responsible for managing solid wastes. The primary recycling methods of leftovers generated from the school food service operations were livestock feed(76.0%). About 60.0% of school foodservice managers conducted the food waste reduction program. The performance by the foodservice managers in reducing the food waste was not satisfactory in several fields, such as developing environmentally friendly menus or abiding by the standard recipe, etc. In addition, the government assistance system was not properly working in the food service management. In conclusion, we should focus on increasing the performance in reducing the food waste by the foodservice managers, strengthening and facilitating the government assistance system for the food waste management and to develop education methods and education materials for food waste management.

  • Objectives: Because the amount of medical waste (i.e., health-care waste) generated in Korea is rapidly increasing and social concern against its safety is widespread, a number of issues related with medical wastes are being discussed. The purpose of this study is to compare diverse medical waste management systems worldwide and propose future directions of a medical waste management system in Korea. Methods: Literature review was conducted mainly on the WHO, and developed countries such as the European Union (Germany, Belgium and UK), Japan and the United States. For these countries, the data with respect to their systems for medical waste management ranging from the definition of medical waste to the whole processes of collection, transportation and disposal were summarized and compared. Results: The terminology and classification of medical wastes were not consistent for WHO recommendation, EU, Japan, US and Korea. Comparison of the collection, storage, transportation and disposal of medical waste showed that Korea had rather stronger regulations for medical waste management compared to developed countries including Belgium (Flanders region), Germany, Japan and the US. Considering that developed countries adopt rather flexible disposal system especially for general medical wastes which pose lower possibility of infection, Korean government could consider diversifying disposal methods other than incineration. It may also be very important to try to reduce the amount of medical wastes and enough capacity for off-site incineration are secured. Conclusion: Our study of international comparisons suggests that it is necessary to continue to identify advantages and disadvantages of the current medical waste management systems and establish more effective one in Korea.
