  • Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the effects of fixed-intensity and varied-intensity electroacupuncture on heart rate variability in healthy people with stress task. Methods : Forty healthy subjects were randomly assigned to either group A or group B or C. Group A received fixed-intensity electroacupuncture(F-EA) at $ST_{36}$ and $ST_{37}$. After 1 week wash out period to prevent overlapping residual effects, they received varied-intensity electroacupuncture(V-EA) in which the intensity was changed every two minutes based on individual heart rate variability at the same points. Group B received the treatments in reverse order. Group C received no intervention as a control group. Results : Control group showed a significant increase of LF and LF/HF during the 2nd working memory task, while both F-EA and V-EA did not. In addition, V-EA showed a significant increase of HF during 2nd rest while F-EA did not. Conclusions : These results suggest that F-EA and V-EA can inhibit sympathetic activation more than control group and that V-EA can enhance parasympathetic activation more than F-EA.

  • The study on bathroom plan for the elderly who use wheelchair has been done continuously. However, the elderly's behaviour at the bathroom and consideration for the caregiver has been underestimated. In this perspective, the purpose of this study is to find out how much more bathroom size is needed for the elderly who use wheelchair and the caregiver based on their behaviours. The study method is as follows: First, behaviours which occur at bathroom were collected from the previous research. Second, the size needed was calculated based on the elderly and caregiver's movement. Third, the size of bathroom enough for the impaired elderly with caregivers was suggested. The room next to shower booth and bath tub should be expanded for the caregiver. In addition, the room beside the basin should be added as much as $600{\times}600$ to let the caregiver stand and support the elderly when they are needed to wash their hair. As a result, the size of bathroom should be at least planed as follow; $1.3m^2$ more for type A, $1.5m^2$ more for type B, $1.6m^2$ more for type C, and $1.1m^2$ more for type D. As the bathroom is the room that the elderly want to modify for their rest of the lives, the room should be reserved enough from the early stage of design, so that this will make the elderly be possible stay at the place until they want to stay.

  • In the screening of tropical medicinal plants using PAE receptor binding assay, the ether extract of Ardisia crispa showed the potent antagonistic activity. Ardisia crispa have been used to heal the scurf, earache, orchitis, fever and diarrhoea, cough and given to the mother after childbirth to ‘wash out dirty blood’ in Malaysia. By means of activity guided isolation, compound AC7-1 was isolated as the potent PAF antagonist. In this study, antiplatelet effects of compound AC7-1 were examined in vitro platelet aggregation assay using the chronolog aggregometer. Compound AC7-1 inhibited PAF-, collagen-, ADP-, thrombin-induced platelet aggregation in human, rabbit and rat platelet rich plasma. In vitro rabbit platelet aggregation, the IC$\_$50/ value of compound AC7-1 was 5 ${\times}$ 10$\^$-6/ M against PAF(5 ${\times}$ 10$\^$-7/M)-induced aggregation. The IC$\_$50/ values of AC7-1 on PAF-induced platelet aggregation increased with increase of the concentration of PAF used. This result suggested the competitive nature of the AC7-1 antagonism. In vitro rat platelet aggregation, the IC$\_$50/ values of AC7-1 on collagen-, ADP-induced platelet aggregation were 4 ${\times}$ 10$\^$-6/ M, 2 ${\times}$ 10$\^$-5/ M, respectively. Also in vitro human platelet aggregation, AC7-1 potently inhibited both the primary phase and secondary phase of thrombin-induced aggregation.

  • Background: Tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) have been used for various pain syndromes for their analgesic effects. They, however, often have anticholinergic side effects and therefore search for more selective drugs with fewer side effects is justified. Paroxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor devoid of autonomic side effects, was evaluated for its role as an analgesic adjuvant in the management of neuropathic pain. Method: According to individual diagnostic group as diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, central pain syndrome and cancer related plexopathy, 10 patients per each group were equally accumulated. Patients have been stabilized in their analgesic regimen at least four weeks prior to enrollment into study. TCA, if taken, was discontinued for two weeks for wash out period. Baseline four point verbal pain intensity score was obtained and oral administration of paroxetine 20 mg was initiated. At two weeks follow-up visit, pain intensity scores, pain improvement scores judged by family, drug efficacy, tolerability and overall evaluation were assessed. The incidence of side effects were also obtained. Result: After two weeks of treatment, pain intensity scores decreased in 77.5% of patients and no patients experienced aggravation. These findings were objectively reflected in pain improvement scores judged by family members. But, the number of nonresponders was different among groups. In drug efficacy, tolerability and overall evaluation, the proportions of patients who scored as excellent or good were 75%, 80% and 80% respectively. Incidence of side effects was 27.5%, but the side effects spontaneously disappeared after discontinuation of medication. Conclusion: Paroxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, appears to be effective as adjuvant analgesic for the management of various neuropathic pain syndromes.

  • The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the formation process of the Second Mujechi Moor at Mt. Jeongjok. For doing so, 1 analysed the formation process of valley which moor is located in, and the formation process of block field damming the valley: First, it is not a valley but a hollow which the Second Mujechi Moor located in. Hollow was formed as weathering bedrock weathered deeply along joints under warm and wet climatic conditions was denudated by rain wash. Second, the Second Mujechi Moor had been a marginal lake. Block stream developed during the last glacial period of Pleistocene, and it dammed the mouth of hollow. Afterwards sediments transported from slope filled the marginal lake, thus the lake changed to the moor where aquatic plants could grown. Third, the Second Mujechi Moor is drained and dried out by removal of matrix material from the block stream dam of the mouth of moor. For keeping moor's present conditions, we must control moor's drainage by filling open space in block stream with fine material.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the change of inner roads responding to the street system and to examine the how to influence to communal space of village focused on 22 existing old settlements in downtown Cheong Ju. This study examined the types of inner roads based on advanced research. For the research on communal space, interviews with the residents living in the village were conducted to figure out the location and function of it. Also, it was analyzed comparatively with the present communal space. The results are as followings: the width of an inner road has a effect to function of an inner road when flow of an inner road has kept. The function of inner road has been kept when the width of an inner road expanded as pedestrians should be given priority to vehicular traffic. However, the function of inner roads has been changed and the community has been separated when the width of inner roads expanded for vehicular. Because the location of the communal space in the village is affected by the change of the inner road, when the inner road is maintained, the location of the communal space is also maintained, but when the inner road is changed, the location of the communal space is also changed. The communal spaces such as public wells and wash spaces have lost and they have been substituted with senior citizen centers or community centers.

  • Nitrification characteristics and performance of wastewater treatment plants depend on not only temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen of the wastewater but also species, distribution, and their metabolic stages of nitrifying bacteria. Due to their low specific growth rate, nitrifying bacteria are easy to wash out of the reactor and need long time to start-up and recover from damaged nitrifiers community. In order to overcome this limitation, nitrifying bacteria were coated on a polyurethane-based media. Laboratory and pilot-scale reactor had been designed and operated to compare the effect of coated nitrifying bacteria on wastewater nitrification efficiency and performance. Furthermore, the species and quantitative distribution of nitrifying bacteria were also investigated in the suspension and on the media. The results showed that nitrifier-coated reactor had better nitrification efficiency and performance than the control experiments. It also demonstrated that the amounts of total nitrifying bacteria of a coated reactor was higher than other reactors and it increased with operation time and wastewater temperature.

  • This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of chewable toothbrush and manual toothbrush and provide basic data for recommendation of the chewable toothbrush in specific groups and situations. A total of 20 subjects participated in this study (rolling method, 10; non-rolling method, 10). After professional prophylaxis, participants used the manual toothbrush to brush their teeth for 3 minutes. After a 7-day wash-out period, participants used the chewable toothbrush according to the manufacturer's instructions. Pre- and post-plaque indexing of the teeth was performed. The dental plaque index was assessed using the Turesky Modification of the Quigley-Hein Plaque Index (TMQHPI) for amount of plaque and Silness-Loe Plaque Index (SLPI) for plaque thickness. The difference between pre- and post-dental plaque index was analyzed using a paired t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The Mann-Whitney U test was also used to compare the dental plaque index reduction rates. The dental plaque index differed significantly between the chewable toothbrush and the manual toothbrush. The TMQHPI reduction rate was significantly different between the rolling and non-rolling method groups for the manual toothbrush but not the chewable toothbrush. The difference in SLPI reduction rate between the rolling and non-rolling method groups was significant for the manual toothbrush but not for the chewable toothbrush. Differences in the dental plaque index reduction rates between the chewable and manual toothbrushes were not significant in the non-rolling method group. The results of this study showed higher reduction rates in dental plaque with manual toothbrush use than with chewable toothbrush use. However, the non-rolling method group did not show statistically significant differences according to toothbrush type. The present study showed that a chewable toothbrush can be an alternative to a manual toothbrush for individuals who have difficulty using the generally recommended rolling method.

  • Background: Previous research has suggested that single doses of a standardised Panax ginseng extract can decrease fasted blood-glucose levels and modulate cognitive performance in healthy young volunteers. The latter has generally been seen in terms of improved secondary memory performance. However, both the cognitive effects of chronic administration of ginseng and the potential modulation of working memory have received comparatively little research attention. Aims: The current double-blind, placebo-controlled, balanced cross-over study investigated the effects of 8-weeks administration of Korean ginseng extract (200 mg) on cognitive performance, gluco-regulatory parameters and ratings of subjective mood and 'quality of life'. Methods: 'Eighteen healthy young participants were assessed pre-dose and 3 hours post-dose on the mornings of Day 1, Day 29 and Day 57 of 8 week treatment regimens of both placebo and ginseng. A four-week placebo wash-out separated the treatment phases. Each assessment included the Cognitive Drug Research battery, computerised working memory tasks, and Bond-Lader mood scales. The WHO Quality of Life scale (WHOQOL-BREF) was completed once per visit. Gluco-regulatory parameters were assessed with assays of blood glucose, insulin and HbA1c. Results: Data from the 16 participants that completed the study showed that there were no significant, acute treatment related differences on Day 1 of treatment, or in gluco-regulatory parameters throughout the study. However, time related performance improvements were evident following chronic administration of ginseng on the '3-Back' and 'Corsi-block' computerised working memory tasks. Ginseng was also associated with an improved score on the 'social relations' subscale of the WHOQOL-100, and a significant shift on the 'calm' factor of the Bond-Lader mood scales (from calm/relaxed towards excited/tense). Conclusion: The results of the current study suggest that Korean ginseng extract can modulate working memory performance and subjective ratings of 'quality of life' and mood. Replication with a larger sample size may further elucidate the actions of this product.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to identify the efficacy and safety of ephedra and green tea mesotherapy on localized fat. Methods : Twenty-five healthy $20{\sim}35$ year overweight women (body mass $index{\geq}23kg/m^2$) were recruited and randomly assigned to two groups : experimental(mahuang and green tea) group (n=13), placebo(Normal saline) group (n=12). Total 8 times of herbarl mesotherapy treatment were performed once per week, 4 times were performed on right thigh (1st period), after wash-out for 1 week, the other 4 times were performed on left thigh (2nd period) without any modification of diet or exercise. Body composition, thigh circumferences were measured at each period before and after the intervention. Subcutaneous fat was measured by CT scan at before and after the 1st period of intervention and free fatty acid(FFA) was measured immediately before 1st intervention, 1 hour later, 24 hours later, and 7 days later. Satisfaction score and adverse events were evaluated. Results : In the subcutaneous fat, there were no significances, but in the circumferences. Experimental group had significant change when compared with placebo group (p<0.05). In FFA, experimental group has significant elevation at after 1 hour (p<0.05) evaluation. There were no serious adverse events in both groups. Conclusions : Experimental group had some significant findings in circumference, FFA, and had no serious adverse events comparing with placebo group, and no serious adverse events have been reported in both group. Mesotherapy with herb have a possibility of treating localized fat
