In order to properly design warning sounds that are affectively suitable to computer users, warning sounds used in Windows operating system were analyzed in terms of their sound properties; frequency band, spectral characteristics and physical intensity. A total of 36 warning sounds (3*4*3) were generated and tested with respect to three experimental variables. Among 178 collected affective adjectives that are related to hearing and sounds, seven representative affective adjectives were abstracted by statistical grouping techniques. In the experiment, subjective preference tests were performed for the 36 warning sounds according to the seven affective factors. From the result, the affective factors were again grouped into three major factors and the 60dB boost-type warning sounds at the low frequency band were, in general, the most preferred. followed by the 70dB cut-type sounds at the middle frequency band. These warning sounds have a characteristic of boost power spectrum below 1000Hz frequency band and received good scores on simplicity, clarity and accurateness.

The vehicle's warning sounds are one of the important parts of overall vehicle quality, so the study of these sounds is increasing. In this study, the experiment of reproducing performance related to speaker position was studied. Based on the result of jury test, sound analysis method was developed to reflect the perception of warning sound according to vehicle speed and the development process of warning sounds was suggested.

This study aims to design ergonomic warning sound that is not confusing and enhancing preference. Four factors of the warning sound represented as interval, chord, reverberation and pitch were selected as independent variables. And, perceived urgency, perceived criticality, degree of confusion and user preference are measured as dependent variables. An experiment was conducted in silent lab environment. Warning sounds were given in 90dB constantly to subjects through stereo speakers. A statistical analysis revealed that interval was significant for perceived urgency; also interval and chord were both effective for perceived criticality. Pitch, interval, chord and the interaction between pitch and chord were effective in degree of confusion, so were reverberation, the interaction between reverberation and pitch and the interaction between reverberation and chord for preference. This study characterized the situation under which warning sounds are required into three types in terms of urgency and criticality; and found the right warning sound that the subjects perceived to best represent the situation through the validation study. These findings are expected to help the designer choose the right warning sound according to the situational contexts in which such warning sounds are implemented.
This paper studies the arousal effects of aroma and warning sound using EDA(Electrodermal Activity:EDA), Aroma stimulus started at Nz value over 1.2. Warning sound was prepared according to the arousal evaluation and control criteria. As a result, the warning sound could be controlled the arousal level in all the mKSS state. Aroma stimulus was able to prevent drowsy more than warning sound in the mKSS 3 state(the first stage of drowsiness). Therefor, aroma stimulus was can be used for arousal control at that state. Futhermore, arousal control was shown to be more effective with presentation of both aroma and warning sounds than each presentation.

The vehicle's waning sounds are used for the purpose of informing the specific situation to the driver. In the past, the warning sounds were developed in terms of a simple notification. With the increasing importance of the emotional quality of vehicle, the research in terms of sound quality has been actively conducted. The desired sounds are dependent upon customer expectation and usage requirements. And it based on cultural or regional difference and personal preference. In this paper, the preference study considering the sale region and personal preference is introduced. Jury test for subjective evaluation are carried out and the difference in preference is analyzed.

Generally, the sound emitted from a vehicle powered by an electric motor is lower than that of internal combustion engine vehicles. Therefore, pedestrians often cannot detect approaching electric vehicles. Therefore, a certain additional warning sound is required for these types of automobiles. In this study, to develop an audible warning sound, nine warning sounds are designed based on signal processing and chord theory. The background noise measured on the road is also added to these synthetic sounds. The detectability of these warning sounds is evaluated by subjective tests. The sound metric is correlated to detectability and is investigated through psychoacoustic theory and subjective evaluation. It is determined that known psychoacoustic parameters such as loudness, sharpness, and roughness have a low correlation with detectability. However, it is found that the interval of harmonic sound correlates well with detectability.
Since People have serveral feelings for the sound according to its frequency the responses of sound frequencies for the people have been studies in this paper. The feelings of sound are investigated by questionaire thar are pure tones, waring sounds of automobile and sounds that white noise is passed by one and one-third octave bandpass filter. Experimental results have been shown that people have good response for the pure tone between 160(Hz) and 500(Hz), and have unpleasant response for the pure tone above 1000 (Hz), warning sounds of automobile, and for white noise. Warning sound of automobile horn has been mainly distributed between 1000(Hz) and 2600(Hz). Hence the resells are shown that the responses for warning sound of autombile horn are similar to that for pure tone between 100(Hz) and 2600(Hz). As a results, it is necessary to make warning sound of automobile horn have frequencies between 200(Hz) and 500(Hz) with low level in the residental districts and crowded streets.

A ship can be considered as a large human-machine system and the interaction between worker and system affects the work performed and its efficiency. Inside the bridge of a ship, there exist many auditory signals as well as visual signals. However, only a few studies have been performed related to human recognition to alarm systems in bridge. In this study, auditory icons and abstract sounds are compared to find more effective means of alarm systems. the study result shows tint auditory icons are recognized faster than abstract sounds. This result is expected to be used as a basic data for developing performance criteria of auditory display inside bridge and for designing integrated ship bridge alarm system.
The effects of different auditory warnings on response time and accuracy were studied in a laboratory ship-bridge work environment. Subjective preference on the type of auditory warnings was also of a primary concern. Twenty five subjects were asked to select an appropriate button for the warning sound presented with three types of auditory warning (abstract sound, auditory icon, and voice alarm) and five levels of warning situation (fire, steering failure, collision, engine failure, and low power). Results showed that the response time and accuracy was significantly affected by the types of auditory warning. The voice alarm resulted in a higher accuracy and subjective preference, as compared to the auditory icon and abstract sound. Regarding the response time, auditory icons and voice alarms were equivalent and superior to abstract sounds. Actual or potential applications of this research include guidelines for the design of integrated ship bridge systems.

Recent technological advances made a vehicle more intelligent to increase safety and comfort. An intelligent vehicle provides drivers with safety warning information through audible sounds, visual displays, and tactile devices. However, elderly drivers have been known to decrease the physical and cognitive abilities such as muscular strength, hearing, eyesight, short term memory, and spatial perception. Therefore, possible age-related deficits should be considered to design an effective warning system. This paper aims to evaluate the impact of advancing age on response performance on audible safety warnings which are widely used for alerting driving hazards. In order to understand the effect of age-related hearing loss and movement slowing, three sound characteristics (frequency, intensity, and period) and three age groups (younger, middle, and older) are considered. Data was drawn from 38 drivers who drove a simulated rural road in a driving simulator. Experimental results show that age influences driver's response performance. In conclusion, the appropriate range of a warning sound is suggested.
